PSA: Amazon 'buy 3 for 2' sale on select games this week

Online retailer Amazon is having a "buy two, get the third game free" deal this week – ending this Saturday, October 17 – on select titles. The qualifying selection is impressive, with plenty of worthwhile games, new and old, making the cut. While we're at it, we might as well reiterate that Toys "R" Us is featuring the exact same deal this week. We have no idea if the competing sale is a coincidence, but we're more than happy to take advantage of good deals.

Ryan, the free game will be the lowest priced game. You could buy 2 $20 PS3 games and pick a third one at the same price or lower free.

I was being sarcastic; I don't quite approve of that behavior, though we've all been guilty of it at one point or another, I'm sure.

This is difficult for me, I'd love to pick up Mario and Luigi, Professor Layton, and Scribblenauts, but I was not quite prepared to spend the money.

Amazon, why do you tempt me so?

RB: Beatles, Scribblenauts, and FFIV for $65 after other savings and I can't pull the trigger because I've spent so much on games lately and have a huge back catalog. Damns.

There's no reason to call me stupid. I never do these game sales. This my first.

If this is indeed your first time participating in a B2G1 sale, take notes:

1. As already stated, the cheapest of the 3 will be the free one. Example: Out of a $60 game, a $50 game, and a $20 game, you'll be saving $20.

2. Your mileage may vary with Amazon, since it claims to only allow one discount per household (probably BS), but the best way to take advantage of these sales is to buy in separate bundles of 3. Another example: I went to Gamestop once upon a time and picked up three $50 used games and three $20 used games. Instead of buying all six combined and receiving two $20 games for free, I bought the three expensive titles first (thus receiving a $50 game for free) and then purchased the three cheaper titles on a separate receipt (thus receiving one $20 game for free). Saved $70 instead of a mere $40.

Most retail stores have fixed their register systems where this is no longer required. My local gamestop and TRU will always give you the best deal. So in your case, you would have gotten a $50 game free and a $20 game free even if you purchased all on one receipt.

I wasn't aware. I'll ask in advance next time... I don't want to simply assume the best, and it's awkward (for me at least) to back out of a purchase after it's so close to being finalized.

I found this under the Terms & Conditions. It looks like it is only for games directly from Amazon themselves, so used games from the Marketplace will not be eligible.

"Applies only to products sold by the merchant indicated in the promotional offer message. Does not apply to items sold by other merchants on the Amazon.com Web site. For example, where the promotional offer applies to items offered by Amazon.com, items offered by other merchants on the Amazon.com Web site (e.g. Land's End, Target, etc.) do not qualify. Does not apply to any products purchased in Amazon.com's other sites, including Amazon.co.uk, Amazon.de, Amazon.fr, or Amazon.co.jp, or in Marketplace."

It really is a brilliant time for these sales. As next week starts the true fall chaos.

So I have $35 to amazon sitting around. I am debating on whether I should put it toward pre-ordering Dragon Age or taking advantage of this sale. I still do not have Fable II...

I would probably go for the Wii games first, since I've never bought any for the Wii that came with our new tv. The fact that I can get Twilight Princess, Metroid Trilogy, and Super Paper Mario for ~$90 is awesome. I can't find these games new for ~$30 each anywhere. I told myself I wouldn't spend more money on games before Christmas though...

be careful to double check the final checkout page before you officially place your order. i hit "add to cart" for Ratchet and Clank:Future right from the product page and it gave me one being sold by another seller than Amazon. Therefore the promotion wasn't applied. I had to go back and look at other options to make sure I was getting the one sold directly through Amazon (about a $1 more). Seems Amazon will just add the cheapest item that they fulfill but not necessarily provide.

btw, I bought Ratchet & Clank Future, MGS4, and Prince of Persia for PS3. All games that I never got around to playing and all under $30.00.

$60 for 3 games is an awesome deal for an unemployed bloke like me.

Hmm, WET is $10 off on Amazon and is listed as one of the titles that fall under the Buy 2 Get 1 Free deal.

Hey guys! If you haven't played Okami yet, it's available on Amazon's B2G1 deal under the PS2 section!

Yeah, I'm recommending the PS2 version because the Wii version cut out a number of things, namely the various references to Clover Studios (now disbanded) and the missing ending animation at the very end of the game (not sure if this is true).

nice. i'm going to try returning the games i bought from toys r us tomorrow. nothing beats free shipping, no tax, and already reduced prices. I'm going to get NBA 2k10, Beatles Rockband, and inFamous. can't wait

Ok this deal is complete crap. The problem with this deal is that all games must be sold by the same vender. So if you try to get Overlord 2, Gears of War 2, and Riddick Assault on Dark Athena, you can't use this offer, even though all the games are on the eligible list, they are sold through different places so you can't use the promotion. Talk about a big F*ing string attached
