Rumor: PS3 cross-game chat in next firmware update

Update: Sony says: "We haven't made any announcements on upcoming firmware and don't comment on rumor or speculation."

In a PlayStation.com Forums thread about the existing Uncharted 2 chat system, a Naughty Dog staffer with the handle "ReklissAbandon" reportedly said that "the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat."

Currently, that alleged confirmation is "deleted" (presumably by ReklissAbandon), but the text reappears as a quote a couple of posts down the thread. We've got the full quote after the break in case all record of the statement should meet with an unfortunate accident, and we've also reached out to Sony for comment. In the meantime, please temper your excitement over hearing your friends' voices with a bit of healthy skepticism.

"I think they wanted people to have fun and ejoy the show since all dead players can talk to each other no matter what team you are on. But I will suggest it anyway. Not to mention that the next PS3 firmware update is going to allow cross game chat. So if players use that instead of in game communication then they would also be able to communicate enemies positions."

Dont worry, the odds youll actually find someone with a mic on the PS3 is still like 1/10000 anyways. Maybe this will finally encourage people to turn on or get a damn mic already, for better or worse...

Everyone on my Friends list has a Mic....and my friends list is maxed out at 100

The best part of this feature would be the shutting up of all those morons who clog up the PS blog with the usual and frequent "Gives us our Fucking Cross-game chat now you lazy cocks".

The worst part would be to have to listen to them scream/bitch/whine when you're trying to concentrate on melee-ing King Doran with a Royal just for the challenge.

Damn that is one beautiful game.

I vote from now on every PS3 post have at least 1 Uncharted screen shot on it.

It's definitely way overdue.

But here's a tip in the meantime. If you're close enough to your friends to share your personal email, you can use services like gchat, msn, skype, etc. for voice chat. Of course that means you need to have your laptop next to you while playing. But, if you have a webcam too, you can also see each other, which is totally awesome. I doubt the update will also include video chat while playing games.

Been doing this for a while now, and if you have the means, it's definitely the way to go.

That's what we've had to do with a few games that don't support voice chat... while not a bad route, it IS a bit cumbersome, having to have a PC going alongside your gaming system. Hopefully this remedies that, as well.

Either way, I send messages back and forth, to a few good friends, enough to warrant this a grand huzzah for me... I want to save time by just talking. And, my fingers... saving my fingers would be nice.

Yea, that's always been available, but it's much better to have it built into the system. Kind of reminds me of when brawl came out and a friend and I would use xbox live for voicechat because the wii doesn't support it. It works, it's just not ideal.

I love how with an Xbox live party it's ridiculously simple to get into a chat room with all your friends regardless of what they happen to be playing, and then invite them all to play a game with you.

Just to let you know, Xbox live was certainly more robust from PSN from the start, but a lot of things, like party chat, were added well after the console launched.

Free is good. Greed is good. Being greedy for free things is obviously a good thing. :D

Talk about attention to detail, have you guys noticed the headsets on both Nate and Sully's ears?

Those weren't there in the first 'Uncharted' .. The details in this game are very very nice, we wouldn't notice everything from the first play, I think we'd have to play it 3 or 4 times to start appreciating the sweat that went into designing this game..

'Among Thieves' has done an excellent job in terms of embarrassing other developers that work's of less quality.

Note to everyone: I meant by quality the overall experience & not graphics alone.

If every PS3 owner that appreciates games doesn't buy a NEW (so the money goes to the developer) copy of 'Among Thieves', Frankly I don't know what else has to be done in terms of helping bigger projects in the future and pushing the envelope even further.

Let's give Sony a message by buying this game and let's spread the word.

One small touch that I think is nice is when Drake is talking with an ally. If that ally is close, they respond normally. If they are further away, their voice is altered to sound like it's coming from the comlink instead.

It's little things like this that really help to make the game as fantastic as it is.

Yes - I agree, get it done to make the babies stop crying about x chat. Personally , i would like to see them start taking away useless features like the infoandmessage status scroll, whats new, playstation shortcuts(too many), internet search, Life with playstation, Remote Play (useless), online instructions, or just replace the network icon from xmb and add a PSN icon for faster access

sony's is gonna fire that guy for sure. i remember how pissed sony was with the leaked ps3 and go stuff. they're gonna use him as an example to all leakers.

agreed- and lets not forget a lesson from the batman AA marketing geniuses, offer to drop the price down another 10 bucks by granting game clubs with 5 percent discounts and $5 off amazon purchases. Sony doesnt care about cross game chat. Now for the past two year every up date is going to have in game chat. Its been two years that they've been saying this. Just give it up and forget about it. Sony has.

Reklis is just a tester at Naughty Dog I don't really see how he could know this information. Unless, he is also a tester at Sony for firmware or ND has early releases of firmware.

Studios do get firmware builds early.

I hope this is true, but I wouldn't get too excited for it, as it probably won't happen... again.

I dislike the term "cross game chat". That's what everyone calls it, but that's only one part of what people want. What people want to be able to do is chat with each other no matter what each party is doing... be that at the dash, in a game, watching a movie, etc... So I think universal chat or something similar is more appropriate. But beyond that pet peeve, I hope this rumor proves to be true.

The only way you would be talking to 'annoying tweens' on your PS3 through this Cross Game Chat functionality is if you have 'annoying tweens' in your Friends list... are you sure YOU are not an 'annoying tween'?

I play multiplayer games all the time. They have this little thing called headsets. Perhaps you've heard of them? Well, teens & tweens have these devices and constantly vomit their idioic dribble into them during game play. Its annoying, its constant and its unnecessary. Therefore, I have mute on all the time. I wish Sony would disable the "open mic" option on all PS3 games. Why have this anyway?

That's one reason party chat would've been a great addition! You could simply party up with serious players and lose all the rabble.

That would be nice. Anything to stop the incessent wail of open mic-ness. It gets quite frustrating hearing all the needless chatter and music (really? you need to play your music on an open mic?) constantly when I try to play online. I wish Sony could do something about this. The high ping combined with an open mic sounds like a grumbling stomach. It really takes away the fun from the whole experience. I just hope this x-game chat doesn't make it worse. I don't have a 360 so I don't know how microsoft deals with this. I just hope it doesn't become a big issue.

I don't think you could do party chats and stuff for free.. i may be wrong. Anyway I don't understand what some of you people are saying?

AS it is if you play multiplayer games with friends you are pretty much forced to listen to everyone you are playing wtih, the addition of Cross game chat eliminates the people you don't want to talk to. Let me repeat that. It ELIMINATES THE PEOPLE YOU DON'T WANT TO TALK TO.

If you have idiot friends, ignore them. Just because you have the feature doesn't mean it's always on. Do you people just sit around and try to find dumb ass reasons to knock something down?

Sure you can use your cellphone, or you can use this system for free. Let's think about this for a second? Do you people just dislike convenience or something?

Go to Best Buy and look at their PS3's XMB. Scroll over to the Friends List. I'm pretty sure headsets aren't normally in the picture for the normal chat.
