Street Fighter IV's Abel before he bulked up

The official Super Street Fighter IV development blog has revealed some unused character art for the first game, revealing a different take on Abel than the giant amnesiac in bike shorts we know now. Before he was beefy and uncomfortably pant-less, he was wispy ... and pretty much only in pants.

"With Abel," battle planner Taisaku Okada explained (as translated by Andriasang) we wanted to make someone representative of 'the weak can beat the strong,' and so he was originally a small judo character who could be mistaken for a girl." Eventually, it would appear, they opted for someone representative of 'the strong can beat the ... also strong."

The post also reveals E. Honda's skeleton, which, like all the characters', is rendered in full 3D. The other characters' hairstyles probably don't have bone structure, however.

That is SO a girl. Why would a guy only have his boobs taped up like that? These guys and SNK think that as long as you call it something, it doesn't matter what you draw.

If the original Abel was supposed to have been a guy...actually, it's not a guy. It kind of reminds me of how so many male characters in recent Final Fantasies look like women.

Its a TRAP!!!

It's pretty simple really...

Abel had a sexchange after finding his/her other side he then went on a high protein diet under the supervision of Arnold Schwarzenegger. Shortly after he met chuck Norris and learned got the ultimate grapple technique from him. Changing his fighting style and launching his career into the Street Fighter world....

The problem is the pigtails. If not for those he/she could pass for an extremely androgynous character, but they pretty much just made a girl instead.

So Able was originally going to be a bridget-esque trap character

I actually kinda like the one on the left. It's different. But I do agree with the pigtails=look like a girl assessment. If they had instead gone with a single ponytail it would have been a bit more androgynous.

The progression made me throw up a little.

I would've liked the original in comparison.
Theres already an excess of muscley men in SFIV.

It's a good thing they decided to go with the generic "OMG HUGE!!!" character design instead of that interesting one they originally planned.

I always hate when the male characters in my video games aren't giant hulks of steroid-influenced muscle.

Well, Street Fighter isn't that bad. Sure, it's probably one of the worst, but you know, we've still got Vega, Dhalsim., and to a lesser extent El Fuerte.

As much as i would love it to be a trap .... that is a girl =P

I wouldn't have liked "trap" Abel, but there is a middle ground, ya know?
They could have had a skinny, lanky version and still made him look male, (ie No Pigtails....)

And truth be told, I would have either preferred the version of Abel I described or the "trap" Abel over the final one. But, eh, whatcha going to do?

No wonder I like his play style but never want to pick him.

I like the original design on the left. They should have used it, but it should have been a girl, not a guy who looks like a girl.

If that pic on the left was supposed to be a male, the Japanese have a serious problem with their interpretation of what men typically look like. As evidenced by countless amounts of anime and jrpg characters

That was Abel no way I will like it as a boy!! I love the desing just rename HER and give HER a story and used HER as a judo fighter. Just like it was but as a REAL GIRL please. I will love to kick C.Vipers face with her!!!!! LOL
It will be a fine original character addition and make more DLC characters not just add 8!!! Did you read me Capcom!!! We want MORE!!!!!! I love Super Street Fighter 4 already because of the few changes and re-balance characters!!!! But I don't want another Super Street Fighter 4 Special Hyper Edition for God sake!!!
Make the game so you can add a few more characters from SF3 like Ibuki,Yun,Yan or Dudley and some more from SFA3 like Karin,Guy,Adon,Charlie,Sodom,Evil Ryu or Rolento. I hope the other(s)original character(s) capcom wants to add works with Street Fighter style cause Juri does already!

That man-chick-lady or whatever "it" is on the left was a cool character design and they should of stuck with it imo

Yeah, it's way more interesting than the other design.
