Borderlands 'Zombie Island of Dr. Ned' DLC hits this year

click to make big-grrr!
Gearbox and 2K Games have wasted no time in announcing the first DLC for Borderlands. Heck, the game itself won't even be released until October 20. Still, we now know that, later this year, players will be able to set out for new (but unlikely to be fresh-smelling) adventures on ... The Zombie Island of Dr. Ned.
Admission to this delightfully named locale has already been priced at $9.99 for PS3 and Games for Windows, 800
($10) on the Xbox Live Marketplace. Given 2K's timing, we fully expect Borderlands 2 to be announced next Monday.
Update: Fixed Zed to Ned. Dr. Zed is another character in the game.

SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Oct 15th 2009 9:34PM
Burn Zombie Burn has been around this WHOLE TIME and you haven't gotten your fix of zombie killing? Have you no soul?
Shadowfax (PSN: u2fan4894) @ Oct 15th 2009 9:51PM
Everybody needs their fix. :D

Oh, boy. Can't wait to hear the complaining of 'It should have been on the disk ZOMFG!"
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 15th 2009 9:34PM
It shouldn't have been, but it also shouldn't have been announced BEFORE the game was released.

I honestly think that's the least funny picture reply / Jesus picture I've ever seen.
This was the best Jesus one: http://blog.nerdhome.org/wp-content/uploads/2006/05/jesus%20wallhack.jpg

His jesus picture is so bad that I found it funny.

I don't understand the point of announcing pay DLC before a game's even been released. I really doubt I'll buy Borderlands now because of it.
If a company is so eager to charge me more so soon after paying $60+tax, I got better things to do with my money, than to buy a game with pieces intentionally left out, and later sold at a premium.
The sad thing is, if people didn't rush out to pay even more money for things that could've/should've been included in the initial release, then we'd either a) get games with more content out of the box, b) get content later on for free (to extend life/popularity of the title), c) get nothing more than what we get when we buy it, but at least we wouldn't be getting hosed down on top of a $60 we already paid (already $10 more than last gen).
So a special thanks to all the tools out there who made gaming more expensive for the rest of us.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Oct 15th 2009 9:33PM
FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU--
Sigh. I might as well forget arguing, because I know I'm going to buy it.

Which would explain my ever-increasing mp3 AND cd collection.
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 15th 2009 9:33PM
Eh, at least it's not being released IMMEDIATELY after the game is.... oh wait, it is.
I hate paying for DLC- hello PC version.
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 15th 2009 9:34PM
And by free I mean torrent.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 15th 2009 9:59PM
Should have kept the reply to yourself buddy ;).
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 15th 2009 10:17PM
I don't really care if Joystiq gets its panties all in a bunch because someone admits they torrent. Hell, I bought all the Fallout 3 DLC because for the most part, were very interesting. It's as if W@W didn't ship with Zombie Nazis and everyone bought that. Not fair. It doesn't necessarily have to be on the disc, but for a 10$ expansion pack that will garner reviews of 5's and 6's, I'm going to blow my money on actually BUYING Borderlands.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 15th 2009 10:48PM
You can just not buy it, Rent it or buy it very cheap used, Publishers won't get money out of neither of those methods.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 15th 2009 11:12PM
Not fair? Know what's not fair? Stealing. Fuckwad
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 15th 2009 11:27PM
Right, just like when you steal music. Oh, hush, you know you do it. It's wrong, but your cheap. Every gamer is cheap. So, technically, I'm just renting for a fair price. Only time I buy DLC is when it is good. If this is, then i'll have some reason to buy it. Otherwise, what's the point? Might as well demo it.
Levi @ Oct 16th 2009 1:06AM
Ehh, difference is that statistically, people who steal music also buy the most. No I don't have a source on that, I'm not a walking encyclopedia, gawd.

Meh, reply fail double post. In my defense, it was pretty hard to see that Special Agent Steve was the parent due to it's...invisible nature.
TriviumSuffocationTheBlackDahliaMurderLambOfGod @ Oct 15th 2009 9:33PM
DLC announced before the game releases? UGH! This is becoming a sickening trend.
Oh well, I want zombies in my Borderlands, so you had me at "Zombie Island", Gearbox. DAMN YOU!
Kieran @ Oct 15th 2009 9:38PM
Well they finished the game and didnt waste time twiddling thumbs so they got on to the zombies (YES!)
looks like awesome art style is back
aristokrat @ Oct 16th 2009 3:44AM
Well, they generally announce games before they release too. The game has to go gold at some point, but people who've finished their tasks can move on to the next item in line. I for one am happy when a game has DLC available shortly after release, because I'm generally not going to play it if it's been too long since I moved on from the game.
uncle jesse @ Oct 15th 2009 9:41PM
Who's Zed?
Zed's dead, baby.
Zemus101 @ Oct 15th 2009 9:44PM
Well you can hardly complain about this one, it IS really friggin close to Halloween. I think it's a great idea, besides ...this game is only $39.95 in Canada ;) So I'll definitely pick up the DLC for $10. Still cheaper than what I was going to pay for it, $69.99 on Amazon.ca
Dur Ingo @ Oct 15th 2009 11:33PM
How did you get the cheaper copy from our friends in Canadia? Personal source or can you share store link? :-)
Zemus101 @ Oct 15th 2009 11:38PM
All I know is Futureshop and Walmart are going to be selling i for $39.99. The Walmart link I can't do cuz you gotta put in a postal code to see the flyer. But Futureshop ....
http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10124753&catid=24295
That should work
Dur Ingo @ Oct 15th 2009 11:41PM
Nice find, thanks! You're my new favorite stranger! :-D
Dur Ingo @ Oct 15th 2009 11:43PM
aww the xbox 360 version is sold out, lol darn
Zemus101 @ Oct 15th 2009 11:45PM
Umm lol you're welcome. PS3 version is too. So it says...
Kirkpad @ Oct 18th 2009 6:27PM
Just go into your local futureshop and preorder it. That way the $40 price is guaranteed.
ColorblindMonk @ Oct 15th 2009 9:45PM
Seriously, if I play anymore zombie killing modes, I'm gonna develop necrophilia.
Sly @ Oct 15th 2009 9:51PM
are you saying you don't already tea bag your zombies after you kill them? have you no soul?
Mark @ Oct 15th 2009 9:46PM
They should have spent this time making a demo. I'd love to buy it, but since there is no demo, I must rent it first.
MrSpaceCowboy @ Oct 15th 2009 9:49PM
I'm really not liking DLC announcements before game releases. It kinda devalues the game on the disc a bit.
"Zombie eat brains, but zombie cannot stomach this injustice"
guidedbyvoip @ Nov 9th 2009 8:46PM
I think this makes good sense actually.
In no way do zombies fit into the story (primary or side). Clearly this is expansion/add-on material. If it were only weapons, bosses, vehicles I would wholeheartedly agree. I just don't think Mad Max(Mel) + FPS WoW = thematically congruent with Zombies. The "elemental weapons" were already an odd beast. Add cel-shading and zombies and I think a lot of people would tilt their heads and "Erk?"
Solace @ Oct 15th 2009 9:52PM
Now know I'm not buying this game anymore... thanks Gearbox!
I can't wait for the "Game of the Year" Edition next year but I'll just be playing Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, and Ratchet and Clank: A Crack in Time this holiday.
Sly @ Oct 15th 2009 10:01PM
what about uncharted 2: GOTY edition? hmm?
Solace @ Oct 15th 2009 10:02PM
I honestly don't think there will be enough content added to the game for Sony to reprint the game with DLC
Dymphna @ Oct 15th 2009 10:06PM
Wait, you aren't buying a game because they announced DLC? That seems kind of backwards to me. I understand not wanting to buy the content, but you don't want other folks to have the option?
So if they announced the game had no extra optional content, you WOULD buy it? Is there some guy holding a gun to your head making you buy DLC or something? If there is, type 1, we'll call the police for you.
Solace @ Oct 15th 2009 10:11PM
don't you think announcing DLC BEFORE the game has even been released is backwards also? I rather wait it out then pay out $60 and then more money for DLC.
Sly @ Oct 15th 2009 10:11PM
the limited edition version includes a voucher for future DLC so it's not out of the question.
Dymphna @ Oct 15th 2009 10:16PM
I don't think it's really backwards, it shows that they are already working on future content, but that it obviously isn't finished yet.
I'd take issue with it if it were ready at launch day or something, but it isn't. It is showing that they are already hard at work on future content, but they didn't want to delay the game three months in order to put in some extra areas.
Besides, I imagine the game has been printed onto discs for a while already, they probably started the DLC as soon as the game went gold. Seems like an efficient use of time to me.
CaramelZappa @ Oct 16th 2009 1:07AM
I don't understand peoples logic in defending DLC like this. What it is, is developers getting away with releasing an unfinished game, and then charging you $70 instead of $60 for the complete package when they get around to finishing it.
DLC makes sense when someone makes a game, didn't expect it to do that well, and then it's successful enough to warrant DLC, but when the devs are planning on making the full game cost more from the get go, it's really irritating.
Jonathan @ Oct 15th 2009 10:01PM
This just made me realize that I should just wait a year or two before buying this game and get the inevitable "Game of the Year" type edition that will include all DLC on an extra disc.
Dymphna @ Oct 15th 2009 10:07PM
This may be a bad game to do that for, cause by the time that comes out the online community will probably have died down a lot. That's why I hate putting off heavy-online centric games for too long.
Unless you just plan on doing the SP anyway, in which case, more power to you.
Solace @ Oct 15th 2009 10:12PM
That's not true, if a GOTY Edition were to come out more people would buy the game, meaning I'll be able to play with new players just like myself.
Sly @ Oct 15th 2009 10:02PM
what's with all these god damn spammers? they're getting progressively worse and worse. first gaming websites, then dating websites, then fat girl dating websites (eewww), now asian knockoff items. what could possibly come next?
Solace @ Oct 15th 2009 10:04PM
his first mistake was listing "NHL Jersey Woman"
This is a gaming blog the men to women ratio is like a million to one
DubiousCow @ Oct 15th 2009 10:05PM
Glorified forum writers - bloggers. But yeah, why is this current trend of releasing DLC still continuing? It's stupid and annoying considering that since this is already finished (most likely), you can put it on the disk free of charge. Borderleft 4 Dead doesn't sound like a very fun game, honestly.
