Isn't this pretty standard? I'm not ever sure how this is really a Wii thing. New hardware and software often have code names during development.

Anyone else feel like both of the upcoming motion control peripherals are going to end up not catching on in the long run?

I think it worked for the Wii because it was a brand new console built around motion control.

Unless either company launches with an absolutely mind blowing group of games built exclusively for the devices, I don't see many people going out to buy a new (possibly expensive) add-on for this stuff.

I'm curious to see if this will be the huge success that they want it to be. I mean this is essentially a newer more robust version of the Playstation Eye. and last time I checked that thing wasn't exactly selling like hotcakes.

When has segmenting your user base been a good idea? When in the history of console gaming add-ons has proven itself successful? Never, and never.

Somewhere down the line of production the entire company realizes this is a really bad idea yet nobody says anything hoping for the best because they're trying to appease the idiot investors who couldn't be convinced that this was a really bad fucking idea.

We all know that the MS and Sony motion controllers will hit bargain bin status a year after launch.

Whatever happens, you can bet Microsoft will market this thing properly. It's they're 'next big thing' and they don't want it to fail. I can understand people saying about coming home from a hard days work and not wanting to jump around for a game. But Natal is different in that sense, it's not necessarily the way it's gonna work. The possibility's are endless with it really. Where as Playstation and Wii will always have you waggling your arms about.

as long as pressing my thumb down an eighth of an inch is an option to efficiently and accurately scroll through menus and control things on screen. I don't see how these facial recognition and hand recognition things are going to be worth it. I don't want to move my entire arm to go through my friends list.

The technology is taking a step forward but the result is two steps back. This reminds me of voice activated phones, "CALL JIM, JIM!" ughh "CALL JIM!" calling tim....
meanwhile you couldh ave just scrolled to his name with less effort and get accurate results

Fair point, however until the thing is released I don't think any of us should jump to any assumptions.

You must not have been paying attention during E3 and to the various infomercials for Natal thus far. The difference with Natal is you have to use your entire body ... Natal is like the Wii Mote to the 1000th degree.

http://www.hulu.com/watch/77038/late-night-with-jimmy-fallon-project-natal-demo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8O3PAHPD0Yo
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vTtlM0v7iLs

If you can point me into a video of implementation that shows otherwise please go ahead and do so. Because everything they have shown suggests you need to be standing and that you need to use your entire body.

Maybe you are talking about the comment the guy from Epic (Mark Rein) made about using Natal to give squad signals or throw grenades ... thats great and all but Natal is going to (presumably) be pretty expensive. I'm guessing at least $150 or $200 (maybe less maybe more) so who in their right mind would buy Natal for that kind of money so they can make hand signals to control their squad instead of just using a button?

The entire premise of Natal is to REMOVE the barrier of the controller for the player not to suppliment the controller with gestural controls. Basically, you have it completely backwards. It's Natal thats not only going to make you use arm motion but entire body motions because instead of using a controller YOU are the controller.

I'll agree we all shouldn't jump to conclusions or make assumptions but going off of what we have seen thus far you can't reasonably come to the conslusion that Natal will require less motion that a Wii mote. In fact, it will require more motion because you must use your entire body. The entire selling point is removing the controller as a barrier not enhancing analogue controls with gestural controls.

Also, as Vcize said up above from what they have shown of Natal it's not precise or accurate and it has horrible input lag.

This thing is a long way from being realized and correctly implemented.

real question - even if you could use Natal to suppliment analogue controls for throwing a grenade or squad commands ... would you want to do that? Would you want to drop the money this thing costs to do something with your hands that your controller can already do?

I'd like a controller please. The Wii has enough motion sensing for me. I really don't want a motion sensing PS3 and XBOX. If you want me to buy your console, make fun games. Ok?

Stupid names don't seem to hinder sales in the games industry; the Xbox 360, which in my opinion is a stupider name than "Wii," has done well, too, even with its dumb name.

So this means the Wii will be sharing some of its shovelware now?

Eh. I'd get a 360 if I was richer, but even if I won the lottery I wouldn't get Natal. It seems like an amazing concept, but it also seems too difficult a concept for the average developer.

I just wanna know if we'll need to have a big 'ol honkin' light pointed right at us in order for the game to recognize us properly, like the current XBox and PS cameras do. It's annoying that I need to move lights around in my house in order to be able to play correctly.

Project Natal uses a thermal camera, so unless you have bunch of incandescent lights behind you, fireplace, a bunch really hot candles, or your house is on fire. You should be fine. no lights should need to be moved to recognize you. Unlike previous incarnations like the ps2/ps3 eye, xbox live vision, and the dsi's camaera that base everything on how well you contrast with your environment, natal bases everthing on your body heat. It also has a second visual to show your self in the If the game programmers choose it.

I'm afraid this is going to fail, and fail big time.

Historically, console add-ons tank. While Sega CD, 32X, TurboCD, Jaguar CD are not in the same class as Natal, they're in the plus 100 dollar price range, which is where Natal will likely be. Most of those platforms failed due to a lack of games (or in the case of Sega CD, too much shovelware/FMV garbage coupled with 300 dollar price tag). No matter how many games Microsoft throws at Natal, it all depends on the third parties. They dump Natal, and the platform dies. And if it dies, Microsoft loses even more money over the venture. You can only lose billions in the market for so long before you have to throw your hands up and walk away, and Microsoft is no exception.
