It's not much protection when every gamer knows it, and anyone who doesn't know can look it up...there should be a way to change the combination.

QUIET YOU.

Mr. McElroy, has your brother taught you nothing? I believe you mean "gigglebytes". Please correct this unfortunate misstep immediately. Thank you.

It could be a gesture to express a feeling of solidarity with the gaming community. "Only gamers deserve to see the contents of this drive."

More importantly, its function is secondary to its role as a tool of worship. Every entry of the Konami code is a ritual, a mantra, performed to honor the NES and gaming in a broader sense.

It's referred to as "public key cryptography"; one of the major justifications for maths nowadays. PGP wouldn't work without it.

Funny. That's how I remember it. For me, Contra was almost always played with friends. It was so hardwired into my muscle memory, I could hardly put in the single player code.

Good times.

Depends on the game I think. I remember the Batman Returns cheat code on the SNES was Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, B, A and on ISS it was Up, Up, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right, B, A, Start

Whylekat, it was origionally used on Gradius, and then included as a backdoor code on several other games released for the NES, including Konami's Contra, which gave you far to few lives for most people to be able to have a chance to beat the game, so the 99 lives granted by the code was needed.

This would be a pretty stupid product. If I found one, I wouldn't care what's on it, I'd just happily steal it anyway.

Damnit joystiq, I have one of these and was storing my social security number, bank account info, and all of my online passwords on it and you just told the whole world how to access it all.

And apparently I just made a 4 hour phone call to Taiwan that I don't remember doing.

THANKS A LOT.

I know there are plenty of NES parts out there, but I'm getting tired of the defacing of perfectly good old hardware regardless. Also tired of people using the term "old school Nintendo." The people who do usually didn't seriously play the games back in the day and have only an ironic respect for the hobby.

Thats really sweet, especially it having to use the konami code, and that even though he described how it worked, its still above me.

The code itself does not have the Start button in it; is this not common knowledge or something? Every time I see someone these days talk about the Konami code, Start is included. **It's not a part of the code.** The only thing Start does is start the game or unpause the game. If you put the code into Gradius III (using the shoulder buttons instead of directional left and right because that blows up your ship), you can see the results take effect even with the game paused, without hitting start.

Tell all your friends, family, co-workers, neighbors...together we can rid the world of this misinformation!!! =D

Fairly imaginative use of a basic security function board and a switch, but unfortunately could have easily been done using the any number of other NES Controller USB PC Controller/Emulator (USB Drive) Mod Including

http://www.joystiq.com/2004/09/07/how-to-make-a-nintendo-controller-into-a-pc-joystick/

http://edshowtos.blogspot.com/2008/06/how-to-make-your-own-nes-usb-controller.html

But instead of using joy stick controls (in the case of the first one) using the keyboard controls, and then password protecting the flash drive using the corresponding keyboard inputs as the password, and maintain the usability of the control pad in the process.
