Report: EA acquires social games dev Playfish

For years, EA has been dabbling in social gaming -- a slightly less dirty designation than "casual gaming" -- starting with the launch and consolidation of the EA Casual Entertainment division in 2007, and then with the creation of EA Blueprint expressly for social ventures in 2008. The company has done plenty of outside spending, too, like throwing some dollars at Napster creator Shawn Fanning for his Rupture service. Just this week, EA launched Pogo Puppies for Facebook -- which actually competes with Playfish's Pet Society (pictured above) -- and scooped up social games publishing technology company J2PLay, as reported by Games.com.
It's difficult to predict how EA Casual's major investments in social gaming might affect the EA Games label -- makers of the kinda games we care about -- but let's just hope there's a mighty thick wall between the two divisions. Okay, so maybe we've got some social anxiety, but we just can't stand the thought of our extravagant, big-budget, dim-the-lights, and shut-out-the-world games go the way of the dodo.

Playfish: MONEY!
EA: That's right! For a grand total of 250 million dollars, you can sell your company to EA!
Playfish: Sweet! *takes money and runs*
EA: Wait, you guys only make 75 million a year? And we paid 250? H4X

250 million? This is almost as bad as Microsoft acquiring Rare. 250 million for Grabbed By The Ghoulies! Wooo!
Seriously though, Kameo, VP, N&B, and Conker: L&R were pretty cool. Not 250 million cool, though. :P
Has Playfish made any social games worth mentioning?

You forget that they also got rights for Perfect Dark. I'm still waiting for that remake on XBLA.

There's no way they make $70m a year. I read a short while back they we're worth about $16 million. Looking at the way the make money, realistically in 5 years time they probably wouldn't still be going anyway because people will have moved on from Facebook. So selling to EA for a nice big cut of cash is a brilliant idea for them, a terrible one for EA.

EA has this tendency to not make good decisions.

Their revenue may be 70mil, but what is their profits? This seems like an awful deal for EA, but I'm sure Playfish is ecstatic.

I actually like the games that Playfish makes more than Zygna so I'm interested in what they'll be doing with the social games.

Obviously I'm in the minority amongst your readers. I think that $250 million is a steal for EA.

Word Challenge for DS confirmed.

I hope they put more effort into the Restaurant City Facebook game. That game is addictive. Seriously. It's Diner Dash, but you hire people instead of clicking on tables yourself.

Playfish is pretty horrible - though of all the major developers they would be the ones you want with the best quality products. Their flash apps sort of put to shame most of the competition.
