Sony confirms standalone 250GB PS3 for US at $349
Sony's back to the two-SKU configuration with PS3 "Slim," today announcing that the 250GB model of the system previously announced for everywhere but the US will be coming to these shores on November 3. The machine will sell for $349, which is $50 more than the $299, 120GB model. Fifty bucks for an extra 100GB ain't too bad, considering Microsoft's hard disk pricing.
There's still not a peep about whether we can expect any of the 250GB bundles meant for other territories, butwe're activating full-on Pester Mode (target: SCEA) a quote we received from Sony reads, "Re: North American bundles, we don't have any plans to announce at this time." Reads to us like there are plans, just none the company wants to talk about right now.
There's still not a peep about whether we can expect any of the 250GB bundles meant for other territories, but

Wow...that's a great deal.
gordo @ Oct 15th 2009 3:49PM
I feel like I bought my PS3 at the worse time, right after they cut BC and right before the gigs started climbing...I think mines like 40G. But hey, no regrets, I'm still getting a belly-full of Demon's Souls from it.
acefondu @ Oct 15th 2009 3:51PM
Luckily Sony made it super easy to swap out an HD. And they're pretty cheap too if you need to upgrade.
why not the LS2LS7? @ Oct 15th 2009 4:07PM
Well, if you have a 40GB, you do have SACD playback capability! Last model with it.
Rejoice!
Ballistic H @ Oct 15th 2009 4:22PM
HD = High Definition
HDD = Hard Disk Drive
ALBGunner04 @ Oct 15th 2009 4:28PM
I still have my original 20GB PlayStation 3 launch unit that came with Talladega Nights on Blu-Ray. I of course swapped out the hard drive since I ran out of space and I have a 120GB. I don't think I need any more. It's perfect, I have all my media on it, and still have around 40GB to spare :)

Surfaced @ Oct 15th 2009 4:56PM
Actually Im pretty sure my 40GB does not play SACD. Source?
EncdoedNybble @ Oct 15th 2009 5:01PM
Yeah I think the 40GB SKU does not play SACD, I believe the MGS/Motostorm 80GB were (CECHE01).
mahouneko @ Oct 15th 2009 5:11PM
All the 80 GB models from 2007 have SACD support, 4 USB ports, have Software-emulation for backwards compatibility, and have CECHE as their production model.
The 80 GB models from 2008 onwards don't have SACD, lost 2 USB ports, and also lost backwards compatibility.
Sly @ Oct 15th 2009 5:26PM
HD can also mean hard drive. FYI, most people don't say the disc part.
MakoXL @ Oct 15th 2009 5:50PM
my MGS 80G plays SACD
Haon @ Oct 15th 2009 6:22PM
That is a good deal. I moved recently and my 60gig is the only thing hooked up and im loving it. If they somehow got BC back in ill be on it in a min because I love the new look.
propellerhead4 @ Oct 16th 2009 8:51AM

I got a 320GB for $680....*kills self* Bought an original PS3 and added a 320GB HD for $80. So, what Sony is offering here is a very good deal.

@Legendary
Omg lol, that's like the best aqua teen episode of all time.
Weapon360 @ Oct 15th 2009 3:56PM
@acefondu: What version of the PS3 did you get? If it was the 60GB/20GB/original 80GB then it was worth it for the BC. I got my 20GB PS3 off eBay less than a year after launch and installed a 160GB there a month later. Don't regret it a bit.
mahouneko @ Oct 15th 2009 4:42PM
He most likely has a 60 GB model which was priced at $600. The 20 GB model went for $500.
That said, I looked at the Amazon link in the article and OUCH. $160 for a 120 gig MS harddrive? OUCH!

That's it I'm buying another PS3.
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 15th 2009 4:28PM
What? I need one for my bedroom. My 11 year old cousin (who was forced to live with me for a year by my goddamn aunt) plays my PS3 in the living room all day. I don't know why I got downvoted.
ducttapeBigSexy (PSN&XBL: ducttape12) @ Oct 15th 2009 4:42PM
Why not just kick him off? Or during the day, make him go to school (because it's, you know, the law and stuff.)
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 15th 2009 4:54PM
He does go to school, if he didn't I'd be in jail. He plays my video games before school, after school, and when I come home from work he still plays video games. I give him a time limit, but he doesn't give a shit and plays all he wants. I hate dealing with kids. My girlfriend wants to move out because of him. I hate my fucking aunt.
Rob @ Oct 15th 2009 5:37PM
You have two options:
Take him back to your aunts and dump him at the front door (she - his mother - is the legal guardian not you. Therefore you should not be held liable).
Lock your PS3 so he can't play it.
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 15th 2009 5:45PM
It's ok. He's an only child and didn't have much to do when he was living with his parents, so my aunt sent him to live with me. He's a huge pain in the ass, but we've gotton along pretty well. I probably will lock my PS3.
mahouneko @ Oct 15th 2009 6:17PM
What about setting your PS3 inside of your room? That way you can monitor him while he plays on it. That's what my parents did to me up until I started high school (2 years before the PS2 came out).
eNrique @ Oct 15th 2009 3:37PM
250Gb - 120Gb = 130Gb
Math isn't that hard Randy.
Pumapayam @ Oct 15th 2009 3:43PM
Ya, he should have generalized it better, or done the math.
Too funny.
AmanteDuck @ Oct 15th 2009 3:43PM
Perhaps he's taking into account the space lost from partition and OS? Just sayin.
It'll be okay though. It'll be okay.
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Oct 15th 2009 3:46PM
amante- then it would be 240gb - 110gb = 130 gb more.
but you are right it will be ok.
AmanteDuck @ Oct 15th 2009 3:50PM
*head explodes*
The OS really only takes up 10 gigs? I thought it was so much more than that.
This looks like a time for....going home!
eNrique @ Oct 15th 2009 3:58PM
The OS on PlayStation 3 only takes 6Gb.
Just adding.
johnnynumber5 @ Oct 15th 2009 4:11PM
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gigabyte
Although most manufacturers of hard disk drives and flash-memory disk devices define 1 gigabyte as 1000000000bytes, the computer operating systems used by most users usually calculate size in gibibytes by dividing the total capacity in bytes by 1073741824
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Oct 15th 2009 4:18PM
Actually, the amount of space the OS reserves depends on the size of your HDD. I've got a 500 GB drive, and the OS takes up much more than 10. I don't remember exactly since it's been a while since I installed it, but I wanna say it's 30 or 40 gigs.
Space @ Oct 15th 2009 4:34PM
computers see a gig as 1,073,741,824 bytes
but people see it as 1,000,000,000
multiply them by 20 and you have a small difference
multiply them by 250 and you have a bigger difference
Marco le Polo @ Oct 15th 2009 4:47PM
Really, people? Really?
No need to bring Wikipedia into the equation.
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Oct 15th 2009 4:49PM
Even so, when I installed my 500 GB hard drive, I had 465 GB total capacity, but only 413 available. That was before installing anything. So, for a 500 GB HDD, the OS reserved 52 GB.
Here's the thread where it was explained to me that the amount of space the OS uses depends on the HDD size.

CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 15th 2009 4:56PM
Actually, Let's Tap in on the Wii, sorry.
This is unprecedented. Once the 250GB PS3 was sighted, I think we all knew it would be 100 bucks more, but 50? It's amazing how well Sony is selling the Slim, considering how terribly they've handled the Go launch, almost as if two different companies were responsible for the two products.

whats wrong with more choices ?
most everyone will not need 250gb on their game system, but some will probably like this, especially those that dont want to partially change their ps3 and install another companies HDD inside for more space.
what about all the 360 skus ?
elites with HDMI, elites without, pro, no pro, arcade with games, etc...
i welcome all the choices. i loved being able to buy a black 360 with more space in 2007 when the elite was announced.
and anyone with the slightest intelligence can figure out the differences between the ps3 sku's, hell most aren't even available anymore. and if research is too hard, the darn ps3 box in the store explains everything that comes inside to the consumer who does not know what they are getting before hand.
