Tim Schafer dishes out Brutal Legend strategies (not in real time)
Look, if you're going to listen to anyone's advice on how to play Brütal Legend's Stage Battle mode online, it should probably be the dude who opened the Necronomicon and uttered those magical words that summoned the disc from the depths of hell, right? Designer Tim Schafer has posted a fairly comprehensive set of tips for the game's strategic battles on the Double Fine blog, hoping to alleviate the frustrations of those still getting the hang of commanding the armies of rock.
It feels a little defensive -- and is keen to point out how leaping into the action with Eddie Riggs sets the game apart from a traditional real-time strategy title -- but it might just help smooth out some of the rock opus' rockier segments. And hey, isn't it nice of a developer to offer a helping hand? We asked the Demon's Souls designers for advice and they sent over a wrestler to break our spines.

You have NO IDEA how "uncool" you made yourself right there...so I'm gonna help you out, just this once, so you NEVER do that again:
Sam Raimi. Bruce Campbell. Army of Darkness.
You're Welcome.

Best way to handle the RTS elements in this game:
Not putting them in in the first place.
BlackBeltJones @ Oct 15th 2009 6:19PM
I'm stuck on the Dry Ice stage battle.

The fact that this game was heavily "RTS-y" came out of left field a few days before the game dropped. Weird marketing strategy to make us think that it was more of an action hack and slash game (including the reinforcement of that that the demo brought). Not saying that the game isn't good because of it, but that it was a strange move.

bit of a bait and switch

In interviews and in-depth stuff, Schafer and company have been very open that the RTS battle element would play a huge role (the game started in development as an RTS title). But I agree that the marketing doesn't convey that at all. My guess is they felt that players would be eased into the RTS battle aspect of it, even if they didn't consider themselves to be RTS gamers. Also, it's likely more up to EA on how to handle advertising than DoubleFine, and EA might have been afraid of scaring people away by focusing on the RTS aspect.

I would say it is "RTS-esque"...as opposed to "RTS-y". It is very, very light...but I do suppose for the "Arrr! GROK KIIILLLL" types doing 3 things at once might be a bit overwhelming ;)

Hmmm, this reminds me of the letter that Factor 5 sent out "how to play Lair".

barret232hxc @ Oct 15th 2009 7:04PM
the game was originally supposed to be an rts game. how was this something released a few days before the game was out? that was like the first thing ever mentioned about the game
Reuben @ Oct 15th 2009 8:19PM
I didn't follow all of the Tim Schafer interviews, so I wasn't aware of the RTS element. I haven't played it yet, but I don't feel that it was properly conveyed as such and the marketing sure as hell isn't helping.
shadowhowl1900 @ Oct 15th 2009 7:14PM
does it include of how to french kiss?

The key to the stage battles? Zerg rush. Screw defense and go for attacking the enemy stage as soon as possible.

Anyone played Brutal Legend yet? Is it good?
Ad @ Oct 15th 2009 10:34PM
I'm a few hours in. Still a 3rd person hack & slash, but also getting a bit of RTS in there. It's not anything like Total War or those ilk.
The design is very Schafer, and it's definitely got the funny.

I love how they mix on-ground combat with strategic RTS battles. Very interesting and different. Tim Schafer knows how to deliver originality.

i played brutal legend and sadly i dropped the game after the 2nd or 3rd stage battle. I dont like the strategic thing in the game.
