Mass Effect 2 stardated January 26, 2010
Captain's Log: Stardate: October 16, 2009. Electronic Arts has announced that Mass Effect 2, the next installment in BioWare's epic space opera, will jump to North American and European retail on January 26 and 29, 2010, respectively. The North American GameStop pre-order bonus will include:
Update: Check out concept art of the Terminus Armor and M-90 Blackstorm after the break.
Yes, we realize the gun says "M88" even though it's supposed to be the "M-90 Blackstorm." Confusing things even more, one of EA's asset sites notes it as the "M-490," so let's just say it's "a gun" for now.
- Terminus Armor -- "Increasing run speed and personal shields, and augmenting weapons with an additional magazine of reserve ammo."
- The M-90 Blackstorm Heavy Weapon -- "Generates a high-powered localized gravity well, accelerating particles to near-infinite mass."

Awesome, I thought we were gonna have to wait until March for this. I do have one question though, what's with the extra magazine/reserve ammo? Does ME2 use ammo? Didn't the first one have a big sciency explanation about the guns using a big block of metal and customizing the bullets on the fly? How are they gonna explain dumbing the guns down?
Mischa @ Oct 16th 2009 1:10PM
I think your main weapons have unlimited ammo, but there are special weapons like rocket launchers that are limited.
Worsel @ Oct 16th 2009 1:10PM
Your right Dark Wayne, but I seem to remember them mentioning that the big weapons will use ammo while the normal guns (rifle, shotgun, pistol) will still be infinite.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:12PM
okay that makes a lot of sense. Cant have a huge metal block cut custom black holes or missiles on the fly. I sure hope the standard guns are still infinite though, cause adding ammo to those seems like a serious technological step back that would be hard to explain believably
Anthony M. @ Oct 16th 2009 1:21PM
I'm really starting to hate these in-game preorder bonuses. I don't want to give my money to gamestop.
Vcize @ Oct 16th 2009 1:21PM
In one of those dev diaries or preview videos where they had a dev team member narrating they mentioned that the standard weapons would still have infinite ammo.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:25PM
think of it this way. Pre order bonuses at gamestop convince people to preorder a game and buy it new, instead of used. Used profits are 100 percent to gamestop, a new game they only make about 12 bucks. So if more people buy new because of preorder bonuses, the less gamestop makes. And come on people lay off em already, they arent running sweat shops full of little kids.

thanks vcize

When your weapon overheats you can reload the heatsink or whatever theyre calling it instead of waiting for it to cool down. You probably dont have infinite heatsinks so that might be what its referring to.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:33PM
oh sweet that's an even cooler idea. Thanks kramer
Drago Dracini @ Oct 16th 2009 3:45PM
>.> Why all the GameStop hate? Do you guys just go to shitty ones? Mine is really awesome.
Sly @ Oct 16th 2009 5:30PM
why are all the comments bold?! that's so strange. it's not like that on any other post.
cold_frost_ice @ Nov 11th 2009 4:24PM
Me 2 uses a heat sink. So before the weapon is about to overheat, you release the heat sink and it doesn't. So your not using ammo, your using heat sinking cartridges.
cold_frost_ice @ Nov 11th 2009 4:28PM
ME 2 uses heat sinking. So before your gun is about to overheat, you can eject a heat sinking cartridge. This way it's kind of like loading, but it's not because you not using ammo, your using a heat sink cartridge.

I can't wait for this and will definitely pre-order but I never enter these codes for items. I want to play the game the way it was intended to be played, not with some overpowered early weapons because I gave them $5 to be sure I had a copy a week before release.
nanomatrix @ Oct 16th 2009 3:01PM
Sell your codes, those things go for decent money on things like ebay. I.e. someone that gets a preorder to get a bonus from somewhere else will sometimes pay for your code to get your bonus.
nintendo fanboy hater @ Oct 16th 2009 1:08PM
the M-80 is finally obsolete :)
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:11PM
Which one? M80 covers all kinds of stuff from fruit juice energy drink to rocket launcher
F1: Basu Gasu Bakuhatsu @ Oct 16th 2009 4:16PM
Minute-maid M-80 sports drink: It'll blow your fucking mind!
JoeStillLife @ Oct 16th 2009 1:08PM
I never really found january to be the best to release a game. but it is mass effect 2 so i guess it shouldn't be an issue
Mischa @ Oct 17th 2009 3:14AM
What do you have going on in January that could possibly be more interesting than Mass Effect 2 mister important??
Roofie @ Oct 16th 2009 1:08PM
I'd never seen the cover for this game before now, and it looks pretty bad. The game is going to be amazing, but this cover just doesn't look right.
JoeStillLife @ Oct 16th 2009 1:15PM
cover for some reason reminds me of Star Wars. i agree it looks meh. but its just a cover.
colt4by5 @ Oct 16th 2009 1:27PM
I'm guessing it's cheesy on purpose... hopefully anyways. I love it... takes me back to the box art from the old days.
Wayne Campbell @ Oct 16th 2009 2:11PM
On the giant poster they had of the cover at PAX, it looked like they cleaned it up a bit. Maybe it was just because it was giant but I liked it a lot more after that.
finnith @ Oct 16th 2009 11:13PM
Did anyone notice that Bioware's games usually followed a certain theme? The KOTOR and Mass Effect covers all prominently feature a protagonist and main antagonist as the central features in the centre with secondary characters being off to the side and ships on the middle left and right sides. Even the Jade Empire box art sort of followed the same theme. This one is the first time in a while that they've moved away from that. Also it looks like DA:O is different as well.
Aurailious @ Oct 16th 2009 1:10PM
omg
TriviumSuffocationTheBlackDahliaMurderLambOfGod @ Oct 16th 2009 1:13PM
Oh my god, way earlier than I expected. I'm so buying this day one.
uncle jesse @ Oct 16th 2009 1:14PM
What the what?!
This changes everything....
abelpc @ Oct 16th 2009 1:21PM
Yes,... this changes EVERYTHING!!!!
WAIT............................... WHAT?
Obie @ Oct 16th 2009 1:15PM
Damn the hits keep on comin'! Rolling from Holiday '09 to '10.
I kinda like it, instead of a gazillion games coming out in November, spacing them out keeps us playing all year round! :)
Rein [Prime Minister of the city-state of New Bjork] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:19PM
And here I thought I'd be able to have a rest period between christmas and the gaming apocalypse that is spring '10.
Either way, I'm fucking excited!
Vcize @ Oct 16th 2009 1:20PM
OMG too soon! So much other stuff to play through first and I still need to do another ME1 run to get my save file the way I want it for ME2.
This game should have its own year.
iamnotafish @ Oct 16th 2009 1:45PM
I played ME1 on PC, and since got an Xbox. I'm gonna wait until we know exactly what is being carried over and how much it affects gameplay before I play through it again. The story was great, but I just can't imagine doing all those Mako missions again
Warlock @ Oct 16th 2009 1:26PM
WTB more tangible pre-order bonuses (i.e. art books, etc) and less in-game armor that let's you breeze through the game on ez-mode, thus cheapening the experience...
Bluebreaker @ Oct 16th 2009 1:32PM
The worst part is they'll release all the bells and whistles (art book, soundtrack, novels) as a separate product.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 16th 2009 1:39PM
Yeah, I'm not too keen on these in-game item pre-order bonuses. Apparently they're too cheap to whip up neat swag now.
smcn @ Oct 16th 2009 2:13PM
You don't have to equip the armor.
...Captain Obvious, away!
Bluebreaker @ Oct 16th 2009 1:29PM
Commander Shepard back again in January? Yay! Will I be able to finish all my other RPG's (like Dragon Age!!) before then? I say Nay, Nay!
Vcize @ Oct 16th 2009 1:30PM
Uh, joystiq, I think you forgot to close an italics tag...
Vcize @ Oct 16th 2009 1:32PM
Oh great, now you fixed it and I look like an ass.
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 16th 2009 1:39PM
It's ok, you look mighty tappable.
Warlock @ Oct 16th 2009 1:53PM
They fixed it only to break it again and make everything bold! haha
RogueJedi86 @ Oct 16th 2009 1:57PM
I thought the bold was intentional, part of a new comment system. WATCH AS I YELL EVERYTHING I SAY JUST LIKE BRIAN BLESSED!

dylan @ Oct 18th 2009 12:41PM
Hahaha! Thanks Roguejedi, I love Brian Blessed and that made my day.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:30PM
whoa, is anyone else seeing all the comments in italics after the update was posted? Freaky. But that armor looks sweet and the gun looks like a sawed off spartan laser
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 16th 2009 1:32PM
although the concept art says M88 so maybe the M90 is a not sawed off spartan laser, ha ha
lokar82 @ Oct 16th 2009 1:30PM
What sexist cover art! My Commander Shepherd was a chick (super hot of course).
Rhamsey @ Oct 16th 2009 1:36PM
Well, who could blame you? You have to do something during the long elevator rides.
Mohulis @ Oct 17th 2009 5:03AM
@Rhamsey
HAH! +lots
I'm not sure if sleep deprivation exaggerated my response to that hilarious comment or not, but I literally spat out the water I was drinking all over my monitor...
Kudos. I
