Providing further evidence of our belief that there's a nice retail markup on the
PSP Go, electronics retailer Fry's has put the UMD-free device on sale for $199, through October 22. Fry's sales tend to vary by location, so it may be wise to call your
local store before you begin your epic, miles-long trek through its near-endless expanses. We verified the sale price with the Austin, TX location, which is pretty far away from the Fremont, CA store whose ad appears here, so it would
seem to be nationwide.
That $50 discount almost puts the Go near the price point of the previous PSP models!
[Thanks, Brian!]

Tempting... But, eh, I don't REALLY need it.
HDpurist @ Oct 16th 2009 8:54PM
Sony should sell the PSP Go for $200 MSRP and include a $30 credit for any digital download off PSN.
Now that, I would buy. As it stands now, $200 is still way too expensive with no free games or nothing.

Wish we had a Fry's in Columbus...this is indie and Gamestop-land over here.

My 2nd PSP 1000 arrived today with a 16 gig MS. Shit loads better than the go!
3dpenguin @ Oct 16th 2009 6:28PM
And yet the PSP 1000/2000/3000 are still better buys...

Still not worth it.
sony boy (6 years til sony man child!) @ Oct 16th 2009 6:40PM
yea it is.
seriously, stop bitching. 200 bucks is actually a fair deal
200 bucks for a psp with 16gb hard drive, bluetooth, and that pause game feature is a decent deal.
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 16th 2009 6:43PM
Yeah, but you have to buy games from the PS Store for FULL PRICE. You can get a $30 game for $10 at Gamestop or Best Buy. The hardware is worth $200, but in the end it's the games that matter.
No Kill Tayler @ Oct 16th 2009 6:51PM
CheeziePotato:
Its actually usually only like 5 bucks higher, can we really cry over 5 dollars?
No Kill Tayler @ Oct 16th 2009 6:53PM
Example 1:
10$ for God of was:Chains of Olympus
16$ on PSN
okay 6, but the games been out for awhile.
Where did you pull a 30$ price, to a 10$ used?
johnnynumber5 @ Oct 16th 2009 7:05PM
Actually the pricing off the digital titles compared to a new UMD counterpart was fair. The new releases weren't discounted but everything else was like 10-20% off MSRP.
Sly @ Oct 16th 2009 7:41PM
considering amazon has sales on the download tokens just like normal retail games, that's not really an issue.
RKN @ Oct 16th 2009 7:50PM
Sony Boy, not all of us are 12 years old like you and have our parents anymore to buy us these things. I barely got my parents to buy me a Game Boy Color when I was 12, ten years ago.
sony boy (6 years til sony man child!) @ Oct 16th 2009 8:17PM
then get a job.
also, i kinda agree with cheeziepotato. the games are slightly overpriced even if it's fair.
RKN @ Oct 16th 2009 8:18PM
I have a job little kid and so because of that, I know the value of money unlike you.
Its okay, when I was 12, I didn't fully realize the value of money either.
CheeziePotato (PSN: talic10 | XBL: InfiniteMovie) @ Oct 16th 2009 8:33PM
sony boy, most of us do have jobs, but a job can't pay for everything. We work for a living, not just to buy games and stuff. With the money I make from working I to pay house payments, car payments, utility bills, and have extra money to buy games and other stuff. Just like RKN said, you need to realize the value of money, it doesn't just grow on trees.

I have one of these, working with two 8GB MicroSD cards and it reads it as 16GB. If 16GB MicroSD cards where not so expensive right now, you'd be looking at a cheap 32GB with that adapter.

Sly @ Oct 16th 2009 7:42PM
the 3000 has a brighter and sharper screen, but there are visible lines when you play games. it also has a mic built in, like a DS. the ring on the back was made thinner too.
killdash9 @ Oct 17th 2009 4:07PM
If you compare a 2000 and a 3000 side by side, you can also see a slight cosmetic difference in the shape of the cross section when viewed from the top or bottom edge of the unit. The sides, where your palms are when you hold it normally, are more beveled, less curved, on the 3000. It's not that noticeable until you hold them in your hands, actually, and then you can feel that something is different.
TriviumSuffocationTheBlackDahliaMurderLambOfGod @ Oct 16th 2009 6:33PM
If I was interested in the download-only offering that the PSP Go has, then I'd pick this up for that price. But I don't even have a Fry's around my area, so yeah, I don't have to make a choice. I'll stick to my UMD's. :)

johnnynumber5 @ Oct 16th 2009 7:03PM
Yeah but it's not a fair comparison even though I know you were just saying it for effect. Services like XBLA, Steam, Wii Ware PSN (among others) are just following the path set forth by iTunes. Some people don't mind all digital. I don't want it to die so long as they offer an all digital and a physical solution.
Kodros @ Oct 16th 2009 7:25PM
Just curious as to why downloadable games for the PSP is so evil and is getting everybodies panties in a bunch yet downloadable games for the PS3 and 360 are A-OK.
BananaBoat @ Oct 16th 2009 7:44PM
@Kodros - It's the difference between a full game and a downloadable game. If that...makes sense....mm....how else can I put this...
Ok, imagine an Iphone game that is 1 dollar. Would you really care if your Iphone crashed and you lost that 1 dollar Iphone game? Now, imagine that your PSP crashes, and you lose Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker, a game that cost you 40 dollars or so. There is a gulf between what we (we being consumers) consider a "full retail game" and a downloadable game (like Fat Princess or BF 1943). People are willing to risk the loss of a downloadable only title, but there is a mental block over losing a full retail title by no fault of your own (say, if your PSP died)
That isn't even my issue though. My issue is how we're slowly being deceived into renting (or "licensing" I suppose I could say) games, without the ability to resell them (or make back-up copies for personal use). The first sale doctrine is completely destroyed with download only titles, and I have no desire to see that trend spill over into full retail games. I'm fine with it as far as small downloadable titles go though, if only because I have no desire to archive any of them for future use.
I think everyone realizes that digital distribution is going to take over sometime in the near future (5-10 years or so perhaps), but the first sale doctrine needs to be amended to spell out the fact that if I buy something digital, I can resell it (one time obviously) as if I had one physical copy of the CD/DVD/Game/etc. Until that happens, I'll continue to be wary.
Rob Accomando @ Oct 16th 2009 8:09PM
Kodros, it's because some 3rd parties aren't releasing digital copies of their New UMD games and I'm sure some will only release digital copies with no UMD.
Kodros @ Oct 16th 2009 8:20PM
"Now, imagine that your PSP crashes, and you lose Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker, a game that cost you 40 dollars or so."
How do you lose it though? The games are linked to your PSN login. Unless it's different then the PS3, you just simply download them again when you replace your PSP. No games are lost and there's no need for a backup copy.
Digital distribution doesn't really bother me since I don't sell my games. My view is that if you're going to buy a game and sell it off later, just rent it instead. Granted you can't rent games for the PSP G0...at least for now.
Kodros @ Oct 16th 2009 8:34PM
"Kodros, it's because some 3rd parties aren't releasing digital copies of their New UMD games and I'm sure some will only release digital copies with no UMD."
Yeah, you're talking about games that just came out a week or two after the GO came out. I would imagine that the digital download code has to be tweaked a little bit so it makes sense that these recent games didn't do it. Any company that's not too busy sniffing paint or eating crayons will release it on UMD and PSN. A month or two from now, any company not releasing a digital download of their game is bound to get grilled by gamers as to why not.
"Namco, the one publisher that returned our request for comment, noted specifically that "there are currently no plans to release Akatsuki Rising on PSN right now," despite its October 6 release on UMD."
Of course they aren't. Why would they spend any more money on a shitty game.
BananaBoat @ Oct 16th 2009 11:58PM
@Kodros - If they shut off the PSN servers, you'd lose that content in the case of a PSP failure. There have already been cases where DRM servers have been shut off for digitally downloaded music, and people basically lost all the songs they had purchased. The same could potentially happen with games.
I know it's somewhat paranoid, but it could happen. Still, I'll admit that it isn't my number one concern. When I can resell the digital content, and make backups in case of disaster, I'll be all for digital distribution of full priced titles.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Oct 16th 2009 6:38PM
Tell me more about this...Fry's. I'm likin' this.
However, like BPMOmega said, I don't really need it. Already have a classic, first edition, valuable, 1000.
Ashitaka @ Oct 16th 2009 8:21PM
Nobody cares that you have an old PSP. The PSP Go is for new users, and not for the ones who already have a PSP.
PSP Go != upgraded PSP
bemaggg @ Oct 16th 2009 6:39PM
Anyone else interpret this as retailers saying "fuck it... get it off the shelves and don't restock after holidays" ???
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Oct 16th 2009 6:41PM
Or maybe they're just angels.
johnnynumber5 @ Oct 16th 2009 6:43PM
It's possible. But if they do have a hefty markup on pricing it wouldn't make much sense to abandon stock on the product.
N3M3515 @ Oct 17th 2009 4:42AM
I actually work at a Fry's store, and it's sometimes shocking the deals you can get there sometimes. Demon's Souls and Uncharted 2 both launched for $50 at my store. Although I have yet to see anything on the PSP go.....
