See North Star Musou's gory details in video teaser

See the footage after the break. If you squint, it kind of looks like a high-definition God Hand sequel.

They had me sold when he made a man literally explode in mid-air!
devilsei @ Oct 16th 2009 9:40PM
Hah! I haven't watched the video and they already sold me with:
"looks like a high-definition God Hand sequel."
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 16th 2009 3:34PM
That actually looks really fun...
joeybeast @ Oct 17th 2009 1:48PM
That looks like Bruce Lee on steroid.
TriviumSuffocationTheBlackDahliaMurderLambOfGod @ Oct 16th 2009 3:34PM
Yup, that's definitely a Koei game.=P
I don't know how I feel about this. I love beat 'em ups, but I've been off the Koei train for a while after the Dynasty Warriors franchise really started to wear thin on me. This looks like the same concept, but using your fists instead.
I hope this gets some polish.
Kenny @ Oct 16th 2009 3:38PM
You're already purchased.

ha.. i hope they introduce special moves like in the anime.

Instant purchase!!!!
Maxx the Slash @ Oct 16th 2009 3:42PM
Is that a health meter in the corner? Ken shouldn't have one at all. He's basically unkillable in the anime movie. A building collapses on him and Ken just walks through it like a hot knife through butter, completely unfazed, and his former friend poked him in the chest 7 times with his finger, piercing his chest and organs and survived it. Health should not be an issue in this game. The Famicom game got that idea right, he couldn't die in that game.
Granted, it would make the beatable, but at least it would be accurate with the movie. And they could add some kind of system that rewards you for not being beaten up. And if they make the game long like an RPG, it would totally be worth being unkillable, to tell a story as badass as Fist of the North Star is.
I'm also not fond of how that one guy exploded after Ken hit him. The anime was gory, sure, but that's not how Ken's enemies exploded. Just their heads exploded, and they inflated before they popped.
Still an awesome looking game though. So I'll accept it's inaccuracies, just as long as it get's a release here in the US.
Maxx the Slash @ Oct 16th 2009 3:44PM
Sorry, my second paragraph was missing some words at the end of the first sentence. it should read:
"Granted, it would make the game too easily beatable, but at least it would be accurate with the movie."
Anthology @ Oct 16th 2009 4:38PM
Who cares about source-material accuracy, that dude BLEW UP IN MID-AIR.
bm @ Oct 16th 2009 4:46PM
"The anime was gory, sure, but that's not how Ken's enemies exploded. Just their heads exploded, and they inflated before they popped."
Well, I guess that kind of thing is just hard to do convincingly with polygons, like so many other things. Anno 2009 we've got the potential to bring the actual handdrawn movie to life in a game, but the kids won't buy it so of course nobody's doing it.
About the death issue, many game developers these days have no problem with regenerating health bars or even removing failure altogether (prince of persia), an invincible character shouldn't really be a problem. Games are becoming more like interactive movies anyway. Nobody would care, in fact I think reviewers would laud it as a great cinematic experience or some bullshit.
Filthy Assistant @ Oct 16th 2009 6:31PM
At 0:16 one guy does inflate before he explodes.
And I'm pretty sure their bodies exploded too sometimes.
Anyway, now this leads us to the next stop on Awesome Anime Games: a new Jojo's Bizarre Adventure.
bm @ Oct 17th 2009 6:43AM
You're right, he does. And it looks like the same old polygonal 3D bland deformation bullshit.
gordo @ Oct 16th 2009 3:42PM
It could use a bit more sound
Freak Mojo @ Oct 16th 2009 3:44PM
Quit teasing already and at least give North America some hope!
I really want this!!!!
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Oct 16th 2009 3:45PM
I really wish it wasn't 3D. I'd love to see Tecmo Koei's take on the 'Warriors' formula in a 2D setting ala Castle Crashers/Shank.
Discotheque @ Oct 16th 2009 3:49PM
Fuck I was so excited for this until I realized it was a "Musou" game. Speaking of Mad Max, when are they going to show that ultra-secret Mad Max game Cory Barlog is working on with George Miller? That should be badass.
Monica Dickey @ Oct 16th 2009 3:50PM
Looks fun. I just hope there is a little more to hold the game together so I'm not just playing that scene out 100 times like dynasty warriors was.
Destructible environments and a levelling up of moves would probably hook me though hehe.
Demon G Sides @ Oct 16th 2009 3:53PM
oooo, i liked the gorey bits. add that to the Samurai/Dynasty series, and It'd add a whole new fanbase, guaranteed.
Discotheque @ Oct 16th 2009 4:09PM
You know what? After watching that gameplay clip this may be the first Koei game I'll actually play.
Kaioh @ Oct 16th 2009 4:28PM
I love how the Joystiq folks are pretending they give a shit about the Dynasty Warriors series, even though we all know they don't.
Also, pretending to know what Hokuto no Ken is just loses more points in my mind.
In regards to this game, it will be awesome. Thats a given.
The real question is, will the Lu Bu of this game be Raoh?
Or will it cover characters from Hokuto no Ken 2, such as Kaioh?
All of this remains to be seen.
Exemplar @ Oct 16th 2009 4:36PM
Any sign of those nipples yet?

"See the footage after the break. If you squint, it kind of looks like a high-definition God Hand sequel."
This is why JC is the best writer for
Seriously, though, assuming a US release never happens for this, this is the game that'll probably push me over the edge and buy a PS3 for the region free gaming.
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Oct 16th 2009 5:29PM
Is the word Joystiq now filtered..?
samfish [is sad there is no Gene in Tats v Cap =( ] @ Oct 16th 2009 5:29PM

First Day purchase...it looks great!
I want to see a video of his "tat tat tat tat tat tat" attack move.
kentuckyfried @ Oct 16th 2009 8:25PM
There better be the classic, "you are already dead" line of dialogue in this game.
It also looks like the people that have electricity going around them are going to eventually explode from this inside, one of the guys is reaching out his hand like he's in pain.
Suichimo @ Oct 16th 2009 8:43PM
I find it hilarious that everyone is so excited for this game. This is a typical Warriors game that just has a Fist of the North Star skin. Other than death by explosion, it doesn't even look like its doing anything different for the series.
Now don't get me wrong, I love the Warriors series. But don't give yourselves the illusion that it is anything else. Its still made by Koei.
Bill$ @ Oct 16th 2009 9:03PM
mindless beat-em-up, gore, blood, body explosions, its the perfect stress release game. its the same reason why i chose Prototype over InFamous. btw isnt Dynasty Warriors more about strategy? i doubt this game is as well.
Suichimo @ Oct 16th 2009 9:13PM
No, its about running around and beating the crap out of everything. The Warriors: Empires games are more on the strategy side of things but they are just a subset of the regular games.
Bill$ @ Oct 16th 2009 11:04PM
well the first one ive played was a fighting game for the ps1.. after that, ive only played DW4 for ps2. it had some strategy elements, i believe.
ssjtrunks007 @ Oct 17th 2009 12:18AM
God Hand is actually based off of FTNS.
Kaioh @ Oct 17th 2009 3:27AM
Inspired would be a better word.
God Hand was definantly inspired by Hokuto no Ken. Thats why I bought God Hand. A sequel would be cool, but story wise, not make a lot of sense.
avan @ Oct 17th 2009 3:14AM

fred @ Oct 17th 2009 8:10AM
Yes. Please come out in the US.
Ujn Hunter @ Oct 19th 2009 11:02AM
I saw "God Hand" and had to watch... Very cool looking... maybe Tecmo can help Koei afterall... Looks great.
Doug @ Oct 20th 2009 4:12PM
I'm a bit confused by this title.
In your standard Koei 'warriors' title, you start out relatively weak, but as your character gains levels and/or weapons/items/etc. he eventually becomes a field-clearing menace.
But....with Kenshiro, he's ALREADY insanely powerful. He basically kills the wimpy peon gangs simply by looking at him. Even the leaders end up pissing their pants after seeing Ken dismember or otherwise dispatch a few of his posse in an inhumanly and painful manner.
So, where's the challenge or game play? It'd be like starting WoW with a fully maxxed out character. Yeah it may be fun for a few minutes but then the newness wears off and you realize there's no challenge, and therefore no fun.
fred @ Oct 22nd 2009 8:48AM
I'm assuming it will follow the start out weak get stronger formula for gameplay's sake and disregard whether or not that makes sense in the context of FOTNS
