Cold Front DLC sweeps across SOCOM: Confrontation
Listen up, soldiers -- we've got new intel from the PS Blog on the enemy and it appears your unique set of SOCOM: Confrontation skills are needed in the snow-covered lands of eastern Europe. If you've got the mettle, we'll be taking the fight to the enemy in five new warzones: Uprising; Entrapment; Blizzard; Night Stalker; and Vigilance -- two of which are brand new zones of conflict while the remaining three war zones are from previous SOCOM campaigns. We'll also be needing those of you brave enough to enlist to hit the books and gain intel on Arms Run, an all-new multiplayer mode where players must destroy or activate a series of dynamically placed missile silos.
Considering we're tossing you out into these icy, blinding conditions, we're also providing you with more than the fancy white goose-down gear you see above (we pay extra for goose feather because we care): soldiers who enlist in the new Cold Front DLC pack will also gain access to a new thermal scope attachment, allowing you to spot the enemy much more effectively. You'll be dealing with the Russian Spetsnaz in these new areas, soldier -- so we're also going to give you some new weapons, ordinance and the option to choose primary and secondary specializations with unlockable equipment unique to the specific skill set you choose.
Finally, the bad news: due to the current economic conditions affecting the country, you'll need to help us recoup some of the cost ofkeeping the war machine oiled up trying to make a better tomorrow. As such, all soldiers who sign up for Cold Front will be required to pay an initial fee of $14.99 -- however it'll only set back our most dedicated troops $9.99 if they sign up in the first 24 hours, the SOCOM Blog reports. The information on when Operation: Cold Front DLC will deploy is currently on a need-to-know basis and we'll be sure to let you know when you need to know.

Thought you didn't need to pay** woopsy
iluvmyzune @ Oct 17th 2009 11:08AM
srsly this is dlc needs to be free since the game was unplayable when it came out
kacex @ Oct 17th 2009 6:16AM
Read this earlier on the ps blog and was hoping joystiq would link up some words to the articles where the devs said (*i think the devs*) there will be free DLC then a paid DLC, but it seems there's only the non-free pack :(
BTW they're thrashing this game, the devs and sony in the ps blog... yet people still play it :S
Well might get this if there's something like a DLC review that tells me the new mode is much more fun than dropping dead (*k im a noob on socom*) and waiting for everybody else to kill each other to play again.
kacex @ Oct 17th 2009 6:19AM
:o here it is... http://playstation.joystiq.com/2009/08/21/socom-confronts-the-1-50-patch-next-tuesday/
Seems like free DLC with patch 1.6... but no freelove? Still it's kinda expensive maybe?
Oh well...
The Pirate @ Oct 17th 2009 7:10AM
People who visit the PSBlog tend to thrash everything. PSN update? Not enough content! DLC announcement? Its not free! PSBlog commenters are the worst.
Filthy Assistant @ Oct 17th 2009 7:33AM
People still play this game?
Mu93n @ Oct 17th 2009 11:12AM
you know, i was thinking the same exact thing....
ALBGunner04 @ Oct 17th 2009 12:35PM
SOCOM has a very dedicated fanbase. Even if a bad SOCOM game is released (I'm not saying Confrontation is bad, but SOCOM 3 and Combined Assault were not my cup of tea, and I still played them), fans will play it because it's SOCOM. It's hard to find shooters now-a-days which don't have respawn as a standard. It's more tactical, everyone uses their headsets, everyone has headsets, and everyone communicates towards completing the objective. These are the reasons people still play SOCOM.
nukee @ Oct 17th 2009 1:35PM
It might have been broken when it came out, but it's a great game now. That and the community is far more bearable/mature than say that of COD.
Pat @ Oct 18th 2009 12:31AM
Indeed you find servers pretty full on a regular basis. And like anther person commented they fanbase is pretty mature. People in Socom actually try to play with strategy for a change.
MyLittlePwny @ Oct 18th 2009 3:36AM
I think it was the most played online PS3 game. Not sure if thats still the case, but it beat out stuff like killzone and resistance, it carried over a huge following from the ps2 days
Trombone482 @ Oct 17th 2009 8:09AM
yes people still play this game. Its still fun and competitive. Also check the socom blog at socom.com. The dlc is priced at $9.99 for the first 24 hours after launch.
Lord of the Chickens @ Oct 17th 2009 7:38AM
Over 1 year of reading joystiq and I have yet to comment (due to limited time and lazy-ness) however, I just want to say how much I enjoyed the type of English used in this post.
I hope to see more posts from joystiq written in army style motovational speeches.
On the other hand, Socom... I didn't quite enjoy this one..
Shear Mohammed @ Oct 17th 2009 7:42AM
This pack will be available for download via the PlayStation Network (PSN) for $14.99. However, we’ll offer this pack to you for $9.99 if you purchase within the first 24 hours of launch. It’s just our way of saying thank you for your continued support of SOCOM Confrontation.
DaPreacher @ Oct 17th 2009 7:42AM
At the blog on socom.com they said if you buy it in the first 24 hours you will get it at a discounted price of $9.99. I will be picking it up.
ALBGunner04 @ Oct 17th 2009 12:36PM
Really? Considering I'm buying this day one, this is great news!
Chris D.(PSN: Aggie_CEO | XBL:The Aggie CEO | Steam: Aggie_CEO @ Oct 17th 2009 7:50AM
I don't play SOCOM enough to justify buying this really........but hell......I probably will go ahead and pick it up....

Haze was more fun than this game, yes...... Haze.
quadraphonic @ Oct 17th 2009 9:46AM
Ebloa would be more fun. I finally traded this turd off. Good riddance.
IcelandTerrorist (stormtrooper190) @ Oct 17th 2009 8:02PM
haze IS! fun as hell. the single player had its gliches here and there if you died. but the story and plot were really deep and intresting. the online experiense to me is way better than of cod's (it has no 8 year olds) and is way over shadowed.

The Most Interesting Man in the World @ Oct 17th 2009 9:54AM
I bought Socom Con for my son as he loved the PS2 and PSP versions. But it was so borked at the start that it turned him off and he went back to CoD4. Now with CoD4-2 right around the corner I'll not be getting him this.
It is too bad that they fucked up the launch of this game so much.
PR0F3TA (PSN - PROPHETA) @ Oct 17th 2009 10:19AM
i don't play this game personally but 2 of my friends on PSN do, they play it almost as much as i used to play GTA Online. So my thing is, why knock a game just because you don't like it? they must like it for some reason, maybe its a very tactical game or just plain fun.
K1LLSWITCH @ Oct 17th 2009 11:11AM
I'm still debating with myself if I really want to purchase this. The game isn't as enjoyable as it once was before the 1.5 update; and $15, for me right now, is too expensive for anything. I'll most likely wait a while before getting it.
Now for the complaints, I still think that everything, with the exception of the map and weapon packs, should be free. Thus knocking off $5. (It would be nice if they extended the $10 price of the DLC a little longer after release) I understand paying for map packs, and what not, but paying for factions, after all that's partly what we're paying for in with this package; it should be free.
Besides where is the free stuff that was announced before the 1.5 update? I hope that'll be released first before Cold Front.
ZetoSanNi @ Oct 17th 2009 9:43PM
New factions and gear [SR25, AK, SPAZ, etc] come with the next patch [1.6], and that patch will be out before buyable DLC.
Thearon89 @ Oct 17th 2009 11:17AM
Joystiq, it's $9.99 for the first 24 hours...dunno if you want to add that in there.
Yes people, believe it or not...this game is still played by many. Take a look at the official Socom forums if you want to see the most dedicated and loyal gamers out there.
Thearon89 @ Oct 17th 2009 11:20AM
@ K1llswitch
It is. The "Free DLC" is coming in patch 1.60...which will be coming before Cold Front. It's going to have 2 new factions (Dutch DCT and Italian Consubine), along with some new weapons.
Rob @ Oct 17th 2009 11:46AM
Thats fucking hilarious. They expect someone to pay $15 for an add on to the worst game ever made. The worst $50 I ever spent and now im going to have to pay more money for this stupid shit? I never play it so it dosnt matter for me anyway;)
Art @ Oct 17th 2009 11:49AM
I ended up hating this game and like a sucker rebought it for $30 a few months ago. Still $14.99 is alot of money but for 24 hours you can get it for $9.99?! What a complete rip-off as it should at least be one sale for a whole week instead.
Shimrra @ Oct 17th 2009 11:51AM
for a game that isnt as supported as other larger games like CoD this DLC should be priced lower just on principles.
Hero @ Oct 17th 2009 12:48PM
wow, you people are ridiculous. This game is very entertaining and if you do not like then don't bitch about it. Seriously. ....How could you not afford 15 dollars? If not you must be children who don't have jobs, and according to the rating shouldn't be playing this game anyway.
knuckles_006 @ Oct 17th 2009 1:37PM
$15 for 2 maps is a complete rip off. even $9.99 for two maps is a rip off. But you also have to remember that these devs released an incomplete game with 7 maps for $40.
Sly @ Oct 17th 2009 1:49PM
its $15 for 5 maps. 2 are brand new, but its still 5 maps that weren't in the original.
knuckles_006 @ Oct 17th 2009 5:01PM
ya I noticed that after, but I did a reply fail. they should keep it at $9.99 forever.
Blizzard and Night Stalker are awesome though.
Nineteen88 @ Oct 17th 2009 1:21PM
Not to mention the silly price of MW2 in Eurasia...
Nineteen88 @ Oct 17th 2009 1:57PM
Holy crap! .. I thought this post was about MW2 DLC!
I'm serious!
Damn, something's not right with me.. I need to start checking my brain activity & get my eyes checked.
PimpedOutNinja @ Oct 17th 2009 1:21PM
I may be entertaining...now--but I was one of those that bought the damn thing for full price when it was released in a nearly unplayable state. I'm glad they fixed the issues, but I didn't hang around long enough to see for myself. I will not put my money down for anything else these guys produce unless there is a drastic increase in quality. @ Hero--I'm not a child...just someone that works for his money and doesn't like wasting it on half-baked crap.
knuckles_006 @ Oct 17th 2009 1:39PM
my bad it's 2 new maps, and 3 maps from socom 2.
npa191 @ Oct 17th 2009 1:40PM
this game was a pile of crap, buggy, slow and unresponsive. Traded that crap in and got new motorstom for the psp.
Rob @ Oct 17th 2009 1:58PM
I should have traded it in along time ago
ahmedbiotech @ Oct 17th 2009 1:57PM
too little to late who cares really about this dlc with games like modern warfare 2 shortly releasing and other games like uncharted 2 which is already out assains creed 2 and and my faviorte one bioshock 2 will be amazing i cant wait
Art @ Oct 17th 2009 3:19PM
I think Modern Warfare 2 is will likely take over Socom as I bet more people will be playing that instead. Plus its little too late like you should of released this earlier in the year like around March.
jonjon72 @ Oct 17th 2009 2:16PM
Worst launch ever....buggy as hell and to top it off, my first experience with Socom. Exchanged it after 4 days and picked up heavenly sword used.
So what it socom has a loyal following, doesn't make it any better. Crappy boy bands have a loyal followng, whats your point????
BIF J0RDI @ Oct 17th 2009 3:20PM
I would love a game like this to hit the 360 as its one of the best games I have played myself to be honest, yes it needs more to it but the gameplay is superb for a realistic modern war feel
johnnynumber5 @ Oct 17th 2009 4:17PM
The guys who originally made the Socom series (Zipper) so great are in fact releasing another online shooter on the PS3 called MAG. This game (Confrontation) was made by different developers (Slant 6) than the previous Socom iterations. MAG is a little different because instead of being about Military vs Terrorist (like Socom) it's a war between factions of military contractors. The cool thing is it's online only and is supposed to feature 256 player online multiplayer and an ever changing and evolving storyline. You choose between one of three factions and work to secure contracts by any means necessary.
Watch some of the Beta footage: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l5FI5LaJENU
Read About the game: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MAG_(video_game)
It's not a 360 game but I thought I would mention it to you. It's supposed to be the most people playing in an online game ever for consoles. It's also supposed to be realistic even though it's a little in the future. Your squad has to accomplish objectives for your faction to complete it's assault etc.
sk8monroe81 (PSN--XBL) @ Oct 17th 2009 4:31PM
damn can it get any worse...
1st- they release an incomplete, unplayable, online only game for $ 40.00 and then take months to fix things, all in the while as many players either forgot about the game or quit playing.
Now they are trying to release online only DLC for more than $ 10.00 ? are they crazy or something ?
yes, its true, you made a crappy game that shouldn't have ever been released in the fashion it was, especially considering there was no single player experience to hold gamers over until online patches happened.
so gamers responded by not buying the game as much as the developer and sony would have loved and they probably lost millions of dollars on the project due to miss-managing a great franchise that was handed to them.
now they want SOCOM fans to help them recover costs by overcharging for some DLC.. nice move. you are really going to expand on the ever dwindling socom fan base. at this point, only another zipper socom game could really save the fanchise IMO.
5-Piece Chicken Dinner @ Oct 17th 2009 5:07PM
Many of you are just comparing this game to its initial release. I don't play the game because I'm not a fan of SOCOM, but the community and the SOCOM boards are extremely active and it's the only game board with the most posts until the move to the new SOCOM boards. A lot of people still play this and I won't be surprised if it's the most active PS3 online game.
PLD_Exander_FFXI:Online @ Oct 17th 2009 6:59PM
Looks Interesting but why for like 6 maps a new side and some new weapons does it have to be $9.99 ($14.99)? I don't see the point, should be around a $5 DLC imo considering how broken the game was and how long its been to get our FIRST DLC. I'll get it cause i get DLC For most of the games i play but i dont understand the pricing.
kentuckyfried @ Oct 17th 2009 11:01PM
I've never tried Confrontation yet. Been wanting to, just that there's always so many games, and so little time.
