If you're anything like us, you went running out to see the latest Vince Vaughn / Jon Favreau vehicle Couples Retreat the second you heard about the exciting partnership between Activision's Guitar Hero franchise and Universal contained within. You see, Vaughn's character works as a Guitar Hero salesperson (does that exist?) -- a point that comes into play when the film features a plastic peripheral-powered GH duel between Vaughn's character and a resort staffer. According to Variety, Vaughn and Favreau wrote the music rhythm game into the film because they are fans of the series, leading Activision to sign on as one of the film's many marketing partners.
"When we heard that Vince's character is a salesperson of the video game we laughed hysterically," Will Kassoy, senior VP of publishing at Activision, told Variety. With the film opening to a $35.3 million weekend, it appears everyone involved was laughing all the way to the bank, proving that hackneyed premises can still sneak their way into just about any kind of mainstream media and work. With Favreau prepping the return of Iron Man, Kassoy said Activision "wouldn't mind" if the superhero decided to pick up a Guitar Hero controller. Now that's synergy!

No, he knows too much about video games to be an associate at Gamestop.

not all Gamestop employees are terrible. just a lot of them, all of the ones around my area are perfectly fine. Very knowledgeable. I honestly don't know what kind of Gamestops you are going to. >.>

yes, yes they are. The only video game salepersons that are worse are toysRus employees. I'm there yesterday trying to buy Operation Flashpoint and this jerk's like "umm, we don't have it." meanwhile I'm staring at the back of the box right behind her. Ugh!

No, Kmart has the worst game employees. Last week I bought inFamous there, and on my way home I opened it up to find a used memorex dvd where the game should be. One hour of deliberation with the manager there, who thought I put it in there and at first told me there was nothing they could do, I finally got my 64 dollars back. Never shopping there again.

Did the employee have a sudden sex change?

This, and the fact that I can't stand to see video games played on TV/Movies because its normally so easy to tell the actor "playing" the game has no clue what they are doing. Hank Moody is the only actor who can play Guitar Hero in my book ("Hey, i can almost beat 'hit me with you best shot' on easy")

Oh geez... That 60 seconds of Heroes was the most cringeworthy minute of television I've ever seen... They even mislabeled the game as Guitar Hero 3... Which makes me laugh that Activision essentially paid NBC to advertise a 2 year old, $20 game.
That single scene almost made me stop watching the show, even after 2 straight seasons of crap, 60 seconds almost topped it all.

This just in: as part of the marketing for this movie, Activision has removed the option of choosing which theater you go to. Instead, they will randomly generate tickets for any one of many surrounding theaters one hour before showtime and email them to you.

Malin Akerman and Kristen Bell in the same movie. Yes.
Too bad it's supposed to be downright terrible.

This is just a case of self interest product placement... Its no different than what Sony does by placing tons of their electronic products into their productions.
Universal and Activision are owned by the same parent company Vivendi Entertainment.

I was going to comment on the fact that the photoshopped guitar peripheral cut off Favreau's hand, but it actually drew my attention to the fact that the real, official movie poster is, in fact, a poorly done photoshop. Note the crappy composition, lack of depth of field and cheap fake reflections. The people look like they're 2D cardboard cutouts placed in the water.
It looks like it was done in 15 minutes by some random studio exec's kid. I know it's just a crappy movie poster, but if someone got paid to make this, they need to give the money back.

In your defense Xav, Kristin Bell and Malin Akerman are in the movie, so it isn't a complete loss.

The chances of there being an exclusive guitar hero salesman are as good as the chances of Vince Vaughn actually dating Kristen Bell.
Unfortunately, with Activision's record, I'm not so certain about those chances anymore. I better come up with a better insult to retrofit into this comment.

Apparently activision just took away the option for dedicated movie theaters. You can now only watch the movie in theaters of their choice.

We have a real culture of thrift. The goal that I had in bringing a lot of the packaged goods folks into Activision about 10 years ago was to take all the fun out of making video games.”
I tried to instill into the company culture “skepticism, pessimism, and fear” of the global economic downturn, adding, “We are very good at keeping people focused on the deep depression.”
