Also:

Rugby was basically football, and then the Association Soccer standardized the rules and prohibited the use of hands. Which lead to "Rugby" teams leaving the association and forming what we now call Rugby. The NFL is basically modified/Americanized Rugby, so us calling our version of football "football" has historical ties that do make sense. We didn't just pull the name out of our ass, despite the literal way the game is played.

@ Viney

Historical ties or not, people move on, names change, rugby changed so that it didn't cause confusion, and to be honest, I prefer it the way it is now because it makes more sense, how can you call something 'football' that has little to do with the actual name?

Thats like me calling milk, butter, and using the excuse that they come from the same source ¬_¬

It won't make a difference, people will still be questioning the name choice and how relevant it is long after I've become old and passed away.

Additionally:

Basketball was called basketball because you literally shot a ball into a wooden peach basket. Now we use hoops. Should they call it Hoopball now, just because some morons can't look past the literal meaning of the name?

You have to realize that there's history behind each of these names, and if they had internets and better communication accross the Atlantic back in the 1800s I'm sure we'd all be calling Soccer, Football, here in the states now as well, but it is what it is and the name got carried down different paths from each iteration of the sport to the next.

Get over it.

If you don't like the NFL calling their sport football, why don't you go and tell the owners of the league, who are making millions upon millions off of their brand that they should change the name of their widely recognized league to something that Europe finds less confusing.

While you're at it maybe you should ask Coke to change the name of their billions dollar franchise too, since you know, they don't actually lace the stuff with cocaine like they used to.

I think the NFL making so much off of 'Football' stands as more of a slight against the intelligence of Americans, than that of Europeans.

No, only americans call that thing you play football... Everywhere else in the world we call it "AMERICAN FOOTBALL"... Isn't that enough for you guys? It's not rugby nor handegg-ball and nor football, its AMERICAN FOOTBALL...
It even has the word "american" in it, which you guys happily dominated for yourselves, like if America = USA...

But you can't go there and say because the british named the regular football "soccer" one fine day now it should be forever called that way... You know, the british aren't the only ones who play football you know...
Actually, pretty much every country in the world plays that game and has it as their main sport, except for some exceptions (nowai!) like the USA and New Zeland.

To be honest, whether you decide to call it hoopball or basketball is not my business, again, that's an american thing, saying that, as far as I'm aware, at least the hoop / net looks like it could be considered a basket, so theres an exception, that still doesnt change the fact that football as you call it has nothing to do with its name, if everything stuck to its historical values, nothing would progress.

There have been lots of sport name changes for the sake of clarity and success, and others have a name that just connects with the sport, golf, tennis and hockey for examples, all of which don't need name changes because they aren't confusing or misleading. Soccer was changed for a reason, and while it may have still been soccer as you called it, it isn't now, F1: Formula 1, GT: Grand Turismo, Ice Skating, Bowling, Javelin, Swimming, Netball, Discuss, Marathon, if they all can have names that correspond with the actual sport, why can't American football....oh yeah, you said, its stuck in this spiral of historic value that makes it HAVE to have a name that has little to do with the actions taking place on the pitch.

The field goal kicker on an football team is almost always the number one scorer. Like it or not, most scoring in football is done with the foot. So stop your bitching about misleading names.

Wait you mean to tell me another niche game like God hand, Okami, Psychonaunts came out and the "core" gamers didn't rush out to buy it?

/s

When are game sites going to start talking about this, gamers say they support something if only it was on their systems then when they show up, ignore them. Marion and Sonic go to the winter Olympics, Brutal Legend couldn't be that out wow! Seventh place, over all and still game makers will continue to cater to a market that says one thing and does exactly the opposite.

I hope for a miracle when it comes to Bayonetta.

The thing is, is Americans aren't asking you guys to call it soccer all the time. We understand the difference, and contrary to what you guy's always suggest, we're not so dumb to get the name of the sport confused with what's actually going on. It's just a name. Derived from slang, not unlike hundreds of words that have different meanings between the two countries. The only time I ever see this being an issue is when you guy's chime in thinking Americans are too dumb to seperate the literal meaning from just another slang derived name for something.

You can accept that Soccer was derived from slang in your country, but you can't accept that the Football name was passed down similarly in ours, and have to jump straight to the literal conclusion?

The number one thing you have to realize is it's not just a name for something here anymore. It's a brand. They make money off of what people here recognize as football, and to change that would literally be throwing away money for the sake of something that we really don't think is a big deal.

I don't particularly care what they call NFL / Football / American football, I was just arguing my point against what you refer to as soccer and how only you call it soccer, because you (america), can't get away from the name you've already given to a sport that has little or nothing to do with its name. True, it makes lots of money and is highly recognized over there, which is exactly the reason it will never change, shame.

As for the coke arguement, it's not misleading like football aka nfl, the only reason they would want to change that is if it was putting the product in a bad light, now they have ceased putting cocain in thier drinks, the term 'coca' means nothing, to the casual person, it is no more symbolic then Mc Donalds.

With all the bugs and problems surrounding FIFA 10 this year, I am surprised it is still selling so well.

90% of people can't even play online, because of this new 'friend presence' thing within fifa, which tells you what your PSN friends are playing, and their in-game FIFA scores if they are playing that.

The thing is, if you have over 20 friends, it kicks you out of the EA Servers, and PSN. The only way back on, is to reset your PS3.

Not good EA. Not good.

That is the MAJOR bug.

The other bugs? 60+ - too many to list.

Stupid argument is stupid.

Football will always be called football here in America so you need to let it go. Whether you think it should be changed or not the fact is it does have historical relevance and the name wasn't pulled out of thin air.

We call your football soccer and you call our football "American Football" ... so who gives a damn?

There is a lot to do with the foot in football ... punts, field goals, kick offs, extra points etc.

We don't much care if you folks across the pond like it or not ... it's been called football and it's going to stay that way for the remainder of it's existence.

Let it go ...

There's actually a lot of different forms of "football"... including Gaelic football which makes use of hands nearly as much as feet. Rugby is also sometimes called Rugby Football. American Football has its roots in these games that are also called football. Also, I don't know if this is true, but I read somewhere that these games are called "football" not because you manipulate the ball with your feet, but rather because they are played by people on foot (as opposed to on horseback).

The big picture you need to realize is that less confusing or not, Americans just don't care enough about the sport to even entertain the thought of calling it something else. Because to use it really is just a name, not a description. Combine that with the fact that our version of football is as big of a part of our culture as your version is to you, and it's just pointless to worry about it as anything more than just a NAME for something.

Personally, I play "soccer" year round here on organized teams and I'm also a big fan of the NFL and "American Football". If I don't think changing the name is at all necessary or worth even half the effort, do you think anyone else here is going to? I see it as a name. I'm not anal enough to break it down into two seperate words and ponder the literal meaning behind it.

I've heard before that apples and pears is slang for stairs in Britain. To the rest of the world, apples and pears are apples and pears, and stairs are stairs. Please call them as such.

See what we're getting at?

Slang is slang, it's a part of your culture, and it's a waste of time trying to attach a literal meaning to it from another cultures perspective.

I don't expect it to change, there is obviously too much behind it to warrant a change now, I was pondering the name given to it in the first place, not that that makes any difference, its been the same way since I was born, saying that, who knows what the future holds, and yeah, its still misleading to everyone outside the country, but just as you guys understand the purpose for its meaning, thats all there needs to be, you are the ones playing the sport after all, we'll just keep being confused by it.
