Mario World marriage proposal is clever (but kinda creepy)
Marriage proposals via video games aren't exactly new, but they're still clever -- and usually cute. Last Thursday, Brad Smith proposed to his girlfriend of five years using a hacked version of Super Mario World, placing coins in world 1-1 to spell out, "Will you marry me?" Cute, right? But we have to question Brad's filming of the occasion, because, if we didn't know better, we'd think the couple was being watched by a serial killer hiding behind their couch. You can see what we mean after the break.
Seriously -- tell us that, when the camera pulls back to catch Brad on his knee, ring in hand, you don't want to yell out, "Look out! There's someone else in the room!" Or maybe it's just the close proximity to Halloween that's got us all on edge. Still ... Brad, if you're reading this, please drop us a line to let us know you're alright?

Her reaction isn't quite as excited as I would've expected... although maybe I just would've reacted more than she did. She was like "... heh... yes"
littlefreak @ Oct 19th 2009 10:59PM
That kiss looks like she is excited....
E.J. @ Oct 20th 2009 12:55AM
5 years? She probably was thinking, "Damn, it's about time!" Hence, the lack of hesitation and/or excitement.
Trust me on these things, people.
avan @ Oct 20th 2009 2:43AM
At least he didnt used Mortal Kombat Ultimate!!
SoshiKitai @ Oct 20th 2009 4:25AM
Some girls can be so impatient.
It took the poor boy 5 years just to think this up. She could at least be excited about that.
Massmass @ Oct 20th 2009 6:42AM
5 years seems like a reasonable time to wait for marriage. A relationship needs to be put through its paces and a test of time before making that kind of commitment. Too many people like to dive into it and then run away from it once the going gets tough.
Of course, I'm the silly fellow who still looks at marriage as a true commitment that should last one's lifetime with few exceptions...
Anti-Villian @ Oct 20th 2009 8:27AM
massmass I would propose to you right now! however you're not a women and it would defeat the purpose of the point I'm trying to make here, and that point is i respect what you just said and agree completely!
LeggMyMuoio @ Oct 20th 2009 9:33AM
Depending on when they got together, 5 years isn't that bad of a time to wait. I was with a girl for 3 years while in college, and we both knew that getting engaged while we were both in school wasn't a good idea. That and she broke up with me.
But yeah, I was expecting more excitement, maybe they decided to film it after it actually happened, so the reaction wasnt as candid.

Pan1c42 @ Oct 19th 2009 10:06PM

Whingnut @ Oct 20th 2009 11:35AM
I hope he got more than just a 'happy ending'.
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 19th 2009 10:06PM
She was.... excited?
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 19th 2009 10:09PM
"we'd think the couple was being watched by a serial killer hiding behind their couch."
Ohhhhh, that's why. She was totally pressured into marriage.
Mr.ESC @ Oct 19th 2009 10:18PM
Well you need to have something to seal the deal, you don't want to end up like this:

Kyle @ Oct 20th 2009 11:19AM
Oh, shit.! Mr. ESC, that was brutal.
The comment at the bottom of the page really lightened the tone for me though:
"youve failed me for the last time starscream"
I lol'd.
JerJer @ Oct 19th 2009 10:10PM
she will not be telling that story to her kids without a flush of embarrassment :P
jk congrats!
Joey @ Oct 19th 2009 10:11PM
Gotta love the jingle when she says yes.
Morisato @ Oct 19th 2009 10:20PM
Don't know if you realize, but that was done in post... it wasn't some sort of perfectly timed programming or anything...
Obie @ Oct 19th 2009 10:25PM
And the jumping puppy...it's ...almost....too....much!
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 19th 2009 10:25PM
He didn't say it wasn't...
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 19th 2009 10:37PM
The jumping puppy was nice, I still think is real because it's too awkward for it not to be.
Mr.ESC @ Oct 19th 2009 10:14PM
Does a no gives you a game over? :P
Congratulations.
Wardo @ Oct 19th 2009 10:16PM
That's cute. Extra points for using one of the best games of all time to do the work for you!
Foetoid @ Oct 20th 2009 6:18AM
Am i the only one who thinks the sequel, Yoshi's Island, is the best Snes game ever and much better than SMW1?
MRLN (The Comment God) @ Oct 20th 2009 3:19PM
No.
2nd Lieutenant Gunther (PSN: helghast102) @ Oct 19th 2009 10:18PM
Not quite the Chrono Trigger proposal (shit was awesome) but this is still great to see :)
Sly @ Oct 19th 2009 11:00PM
i actually think this one was cuter...
jinn35 @ Oct 19th 2009 10:20PM
There's something about that dog...
xblingdaddy2005x @ Oct 19th 2009 10:21PM

But Halo invented videogame proposals:

Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 19th 2009 10:23PM
At least he has a girlfriend that likes video games. :/
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 19th 2009 10:29PM
Or doesn't like serial killers.
Cal @ Oct 20th 2009 12:47AM
Mine likes both
Guibs @ Oct 20th 2009 11:09AM
True to that. I wish my wife would like playing videogames. I still have hopes people. We just bought our son a Wii for his birthday and while I pitch for the idea, I had a secret motive to use the wii to finally win her over the videogames. Been trying for 10 years without luck so far...
GoldN @ Oct 19th 2009 10:25PM
That was freakin' adorable.
Jacksons @ Oct 19th 2009 10:29PM
Cute, congrats!
Sly @ Oct 19th 2009 10:40PM
hmm... did the creeper get invited to the wedding too? he filmed this, it's only fair.
ZombieRobot @ Oct 19th 2009 10:45PM
id tap that
Solace @ Oct 19th 2009 10:58PM
"Hey guys I'm going to propose to my girlfriend in a dark basement and have a video game ask the question, I'm the best boyfriend ever she'll have to say yes." is what he was thinking which is just disturbing.
I love video games but it's not my life as is for this guy. I can even imagine their honeymoon on PlayStation Home dry humping one another. It's one thing to be creative but this is just plain stupid.
Reuben @ Oct 19th 2009 11:22PM
A little harsh, no? He loves Super Mario, she likes Super Mario, the proposal is cute and inventive.
The stupid part isn't really coming across.
Traceur_Ryuk [All Digital until December] (PSN: Ryuk_shinigami) @ Oct 20th 2009 12:55AM
At least it's more creative than most proposals, take them to a fancy restaurant, give a boring cliché speech, etc.
(PSN) Mecha37 @ Oct 20th 2009 2:02AM
well the whole getting down on one knee has been done to death
Temidien @ Oct 20th 2009 10:46AM
Way to be a killjoy, Solace. I'm sure we're all glad to hear that you have a life outside of video games, no doubt you're a pioneer of men.
I just don't get why you have to bash a couple that's obviously happy being together and having their eccentricities.
Deuce-MRP- @ Oct 19th 2009 11:00PM
Creepy.
Not the camera placement, the dog. Must have trained that mofo to jump right into the action at first chance.
SpeechPro @ Oct 19th 2009 11:04PM
Wait til she spells out "I'm Pregnant" in his froot loops....
Sly @ Oct 19th 2009 11:14PM
"Hey honey I spelled out a special message in your fruit loops!"
*OO OOOOOOOO*
"Um... thanks?"
Gun Barrier @ Oct 19th 2009 11:54PM
LMao Sly!
eNrique @ Oct 20th 2009 1:36AM
Yeah, he's going to be as exited as she was in the video.
Temidien @ Oct 20th 2009 10:48AM
You just put a smile on my face, Sly. Thanks.
LegendaryRedass @ Oct 19th 2009 11:01PM
The best proposal I've seen is when some guy shaved "will you marry me?" in his back hair, it was on an episode of AFV.
