NintendoWare Weekly: LostWinds, Shootanto, Rygar ... Domo

Gallery: Domo games (DSiWare)
WiiWare
DSiWare
- LostWinds: Winter of the Melodias (Frontier, 1 player, 1,000 Wii Points): Toku and Enril are back, to rescue Toku's mother Magdi and the entire Melodia civilization by jumping and blowing wind at things. This time, they can change the seasons from summer to winter, giving all of their enemies colds in the process.
- Shootanto: Evolutionary Mayhem (Hudson, 1-2 players, 500 Wii Points): Throw away all your other games about monkeys evolving into modern humans as they throw rocks at lizardmen, because Shootanto is here. If you could hit a dinosaur or a monstrous Venus fly trap with those games, that would be great.
- Rygar (Arcade, 1-2 players, 600 Wii Points): Tecmo's deadest, most shirtless hero is back in his original adventure. This is long before that weird makeover with the feathered white hair. This is Rygar as you remember it, unless you played the NES game the most, in which case you'll find this version nicer-looking and much more linear.
DSiWare
- Crash-Course Domo, Hard-Hat Domo, Pro-Putt Domo, Rock-n-Roll Domo, White-Water Domo (Nintendo, 1 player, 200 DSi Points each): Domo-kun embarks on bicycle-riding, construction, golfing, musical, and kayaking adventures. All are pretty much guaranteed to be more inexplicably adorable then usual with the addition of a friendly monster with a gaping, rectangular mouth.

DOMO!?
DSi PURCHASE BEING WORTH IT CONFIRMED. THIS IS WHAT I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR.
bongoes Sector 2814 @ Oct 19th 2009 3:44PM
Indeed.
b33z3r @ Oct 19th 2009 10:13AM
We need more Domo on the Wii.
Matisyahu Serious @ Oct 19th 2009 2:19PM
more?
what do we have in the first place?
DomoBraden @ Oct 19th 2009 5:38PM
Alright, I admit it, it's been a while since I've booted up my Wii. I'll get right on it, I promise.
WRYYYYYY @ Oct 19th 2009 10:15AM

Odd. The Domo games look like they're slightly glossed-up versions of a few of the minigames on the old Domo GBA cart that was released in Japan... something like six years ago, maybe?
No complaints, I suppose. Though I wish they'd just updated and localized the entire original and sold it at retail. There were a lot of other fun minigames on that cart and it would be nice to have localized versions. Of course, I suppose Domo is a tough sell over here, so I can understand why they'd want to go digital rather than taking the risk on a retail release.
WRYYYYYY @ Oct 19th 2009 1:50PM
I played as much of the GBA version as I could get through not knowing Japanese, which was surprisingly a lot. Wish they'd localized the whole thing.

Domo-kun is, surprisingly, branching out in the States. I know I've seen plush and clothing at various stores, and 7-11 has some Domo-kun promotion going on right now. I don't get why... but it sure is interesting.
Miranda @ Oct 20th 2009 3:09PM
I dunno ... Domo was Target's Halloween theme last year, and this year 7-11 has Domo on all its signage for some reason. You can buy your coffee in a paper Domo cup. (If they were selling refillable plastic cups with Domo on them, I'd buy one in a hot minute.)
I think he's gaining popularity in the U.S. And since game geeks are often hip to Japanese pop culture, I don't think a domo DS game would be too hard a sell. Still, I'm not going to knock five Domo minigames for $2 each. :-) I already bought three of them last night. :-)

The first Lostwinds was a real gem, a fine example of how Wii ware can deliver a nice compact, relaxing gaming experience....too bad between then and the sequel there has been nothing but shovelware.
Maulok @ Oct 19th 2009 10:50AM
If this were Facebook, I would "like" this comment. Agree almost completely.
SuperADAM @ Oct 19th 2009 11:12AM
World of Goo? Mega Man 9? Strong Bad? Swords and Soldiers? Lots of shovelware, yes, but there are plenty of good games.
Alexisonfire @ Oct 19th 2009 11:23AM
Art Style games? Bit.Trip Beat? Bit.Trip Core? NyxQuest? World of Goo? Mega Man 9? Toki Tori? SBCG4AP? Final Fantasy IV: After Years? Space Invaders Get Even? Alien Crush Returns? My Life As King? My Life As A DarkLord? Tales of Monkey Island? ....others?

I have an honest question. How many WiiWare games have you played since then?
I tend to agree with the lists, there are lots of great games in my mind, but I'm curious about your remark. Is it informed? Could you list the games you played and didn't like?
I appreciate informed opinions, they lead to reasonable and useful discussions.
I'd add Tetris, Bomberman, Lit, Bonsai Barber, and Driift Mania as games we've enjoyed from WiiWare at the office that weren't listed above. Though there are plenty of 'meh' titles on WiiWare, there is a ton of great content...that is mostly being ignored by people who for some unknown reason refuse to look at it. If you are in that camp, you're missing out, you should try the games. They won't hurt you and you might find that might enjoy them.
(Why is it that trying to get some gamers to play WiiWare games is like trying to convince a non-gamer to pick up a controller? WAY, way too much ignorant hating going on...they're games...play them...enjoy them...)
Mr. Fister @ Oct 19th 2009 1:34PM
I'll add Contra ReBirth to those lists. So far, it's the best 1,000 Wii points I've spent on WiiWare.
Then again, I do likes me some Contra.....
Engerz @ Oct 19th 2009 10:47AM
I knew a game is what was left for Domo. Target and 7-Eleven have been selling Domo stuff for a while now.
R (Planeteers | Power of Penile Pulse) @ Oct 19th 2009 11:16AM
And most people in the U.S. dont even know what he is, considering he's a mascot for a Japanese TV station.
I still picked me up an awesome Domo slurpee cup though.
Engerz @ Oct 19th 2009 10:47AM
Why in the blue hell would you ask that here?
norebonomis @ Oct 19th 2009 11:11AM
why not?
WizarDru @ Oct 19th 2009 2:04PM
Methinks some folks underestimate Domo's notoriety in the states. He was a Target mascot for at least a year, which is where a lot of folks saw him. 7-11 is pushing him now, so while he's not Mario...he isn't unknown.
Jason Statham (Has a ps3 now) @ Oct 19th 2009 12:43PM
1. Reply to your comment.
2. While I'm sure other joystiq users dabble in pirating, most people here have enough common sense to know not to be posting information about where to get the latest torrents for games. I also like to believe it's because people would rather you support the developers (especially since this is a good wii game, and thus needs all the support it can get) than steal it of the internet.
Donald @ Oct 19th 2009 1:13PM
Every time you pirate a game, God kills a Domo-kun.
Please, think of the Domo-kuns.
bm @ Oct 19th 2009 1:00PM
Here's a good torrent for it: http://www.youfuckingthief.com/gokillyourself.torrent
Mr. Fister @ Oct 19th 2009 1:37PM
LostWinds 2 is out now? Glad I saved that other 1,000 Wii points from when I got Contra ReBirth.
Hopefully it won't end just as it's getting good.
John Z @ Oct 19th 2009 3:44PM
So Rock'n Roll Domo was actually pretty fun for a 200-point game. Shows that Nintendo can really do this whole DSiWare thing right when they feel like it.
Keiichi @ Oct 19th 2009 5:02PM
The Domo games are indeed from 'Domo-kun no Fushigi Terebi'. I completed that a while back - it was class. Hope they're going to do the other mini games as well
BPMOmega [XBL, PSN, Steam] @ Oct 19th 2009 6:12PM
That link didn't work! :V
b33z3r @ Oct 20th 2009 9:47AM
None, which is why we need more. :)
b33z3r @ Oct 20th 2009 9:49AM
"And most people in the U.S. dont even know what he is, considering he's a mascot for a Japanese TV station."
Yeah, most people think he kills kittens. :P Anyone who hasn't seen the TV spots for NHK should look em up, pretty funny.
