Q-Games president Dylan Cuthbert has suggested that rampant piracy of his studio's optimized PSP port, PixelJunk Monsters Deluxe (PJMD), has deterred its plans for further PSP development. "I don't think we'll port anything else to the PSP, we have to see how PJMD does as there's a *lot* of piracy," Cuthbert tweeted over the weekend. Perhaps constrained by character limitations or simply caught up in another Uncharted 2 sesh, Cuthbert did not cite piracy estimates -- nor sales figures, for that matter. He did, however, confirm a demo is in the works; "but I don't think it makes any difference to piracy," Cuthbert lamented.
Cuthbert added in a follow-up tweet, "because Monsters is such a good fit it is being pirated I think," and then he responded to a suggestion to incorporate anti-piracy measures into the game code with: "unfortunately the pirates could just hack those kinds of things out." While the PSP Go has yet to be fully unlocked by would-be pirates and download-only PSN titles seem to be well protected from piracy, PJMD is available on UMD (in Japan and the greater Asia region), which has no doubt lead to the distribution of pirated versions of the game.
While it's somewhat naive of Q-Games to not have anticipated a piracy issue, it's no less disheartening. The PSP has long suffered from a lack of consistent third-party support because of a history of sales losses due to piracy. Q-Games is just the latest developer hesitant to commit further resources to supporting the PSP platform, and without the release of an impossibility firm firmware, it won't be the last.
Update: Cuthbert reemphasizes that PJMD sales will be the key determining factor that drives Q-Games' future in PSP development. Cuthbert's studio has not definitely dropped PSP development, but ostensibly low sales over the first three weeks of PJMD availability have Q-Games in some doubt about pursuing further PSP projects. Of course, a sales spike could certainly change that attitude.

I feel bad for the game developer, but at the end of the day its Sony's fault for not doing a better job of making a platform that people feel good about investing in. In the UK, PSP games are over $40, thats no good. Especially when you can buy an iPod Touch for less money and get tons of cheap games.
Times have changed, PSP game and console prices should too

Everyone I know who owns one either doesn't play games with it or pirates it. Sometimes I wonder why people still continue to develop games for the PSP.

This explains why I can't find people to play online with. =( Everyone must of pirated the game, and they can't play it online.

I think they just wanted too much money for it. $20 for a flash tower defense game (or what looks like one).
It might be a great game, but it's competing with a lot of other great PS games that were originally $30-40 and are now $20. (God of War, for instance, the Syphon Filter games).
And that's not even counting console games. I'm loathe to spend $20 on a downloadable title when I can get an older 360 disc game for $20.
$15 would have been a fairer price...

You don't pay, you don't deserve to play. What makes you think you're so damn special that you're entitled to a free game?
Guess what?
YOU ARE NOT ENTITLED TO ANYTHING. NOONE OWES YOU ANYTHING. YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL (despite what your mommy tells you).
You want something so badly? Then buy it. Don't want to pay for it? Then you don't get to have it. Simple as that. You don't have a RIGHT to play video games.
It just bugs me how people steal and pirate, and yet see nothing wrong with it. No morals.

that's really sad though. I really liked Pixel Junk games and I was hoping they would port more of their games over eventually. I totally paid for it. there are times that i've pirated stuff but then again who hasn't If the game is that worth it to me then i will buy it. LIke this weekend i have no money I am totally going to buy trine anyway because I hear it's bad a$$ed and it's really fun. I mean i could have totally probably found a pirated copy of it on the internet but I am not going to because I love sony and all the stuff they make. Really i'd probably be dead if sony didn't exist because i just got a psp go and it then my friend decided she wanted to break up with me...so i just played videogames till i semi- got over it.

There's a demo of Trine available that you can try. Also, yeah Trine is TOTALLY amazing and well worth your cash. Play the demo and then BUY it, it rocks.

Ok, so yes *rage**rage* we all hate pirates.. pirates are responsible for everything that's bad blah blah ok..
Now, can we get some facts? Where is he getting his figures from? How is he determining how badly piracy is impacting their sales and why can't he release that data here? "because Monsters is such a good fit it is being pirated I think," Is not a fact. In general, stuff that involves the words "I think" are not facts. They're speculation.
It's all easy to have a big heartfelt sob about how the nasty pirates are taking food off your table, but for fuck sakes, provide some solid backing to your argument besides teary eyed rhetoric.
Yes. I pirate games. I'll admit it. I also have the biggest collection of original games out of everyone I know. I have a floor to ceiling bookshelf full of original PSP games, NDS games and PC games. Not to mention older stuff like the GBA.
At some point nearly every one of those games was pirated first so I could try it out. If the game was good, I ordered the original.
If it was a rushed product intended to fool me into spending money on a shiny case and empty promises, I deleted it and didn't buy an original.
Developers, yes, piracy happens. However, in general, if your game isn't making money, there are two main reasons.
1) You didn't market it. Nobody knows about it and piracy is probably doing you a favor by letting people try it out and hopefully buy an original.
or..
2) You just made a piss poor product in the hopes that the idiots would buy it before they realized what crap you just tried to foist on them. Most of those pirate downloads you see are people trying it and then getting rid of your steaming pile in disgust.
No, you probably will never stop piracy. So adapt. Start engaging with fans. Build some customer loyalty. Stop trying to screw people.
Have a look at what the Torchlight devs did for that girl who said she can't play with camera shake, and a few hours later they announced they'd added the ability to turn it off, just because of her.
You know what, people out there will go and BUY that game because of that. They will pay for it and if they meet someone who pirated the game, they'll give them hell about it. I'm certainly buying Torchlight the day it releases, no question about it.
That's how you fix things. Not crying about how you're going to take your ball and go home because everyone is mean to you.

Q Games seem to be engaging their audience, with the public naming of shooter, and cuthberts twitter often has cool things about the development progress.
They ported this first PSP title, and are waiting to see how it does, he's worried that the cost of developing the game may not be recouped, due to piracy.
i don't think hes whinging, rather they have done this to test the waters,
They can monitor numbers of people who have downloaded a torrent of the game and have an estimate of the pirated copies, comparing this with their sales numbers i am sure is depressing.
if they dont make their money back, then why would they port any more games?
it is a surprise that anyone develops for the system actually, due to the rampant piracy.. anyone who pirates games is contributing to developers leaving that system, look at PC gaming right now.
I enjoyed monsters on the PS3, but its such a good fit for the PSP, totally worth the price, the last UMD game i bought was more than twice the price!
again, you have no right to pirate games, and no moral ground to stand on if you don't 'like' the price

Actually no, that's a shallow excuse people like yourself use all the time to excuse thievery. Trust me, I know people just like you. Download GOW Chains three days before the games released, beat it before most even get to play, love it, then give an excuse like "oh, it was okay, but totally not worth _____ so I'll wait for the price to drop." Meanwhile, the developer waiting on the cash you stole from their table look around...
"I don't get it, people love this game, rave about it... download and play it, but won't shell out the cash. Fuck these people, onto Wii development. If hard work is rewarded with theft, let's make minigames for people willing to BUY the fucking games."
And yes, while SOME use piracy to decide on purchases, a vast majority don't. I said it. They fucking don't. How do I know this? 8 million downloads on Crisis Core, 1.2 million sold globally and THAT's the best Square did on PSP. If your theory is true, based on the rave reviews and generally positive reaction to the game, Square would have at LEAST 4 million sales if it was a divisive title. In other words, most saying "try before buy" are fucking lying.

@Plastic Rat: Brilliant post. Devs claiming that piracy is killing a product are most often full of it for the very reasons you state.
Q's product has had ZERO marketing push, has the graphics of a DS game, and is not a well suited game type for the PSPs primary demographic.
Other devs who have bashed the PSP due piracy are often the same guys doing straight porting of Ps2 games and charging between $40 and $50 for a *portable* game and then being surprised that people don't want to spend that much on a game they've already played on another system and will only play portably when stuck waiting at the doctors office or on the bus/traveling.

Video Games are a WANT, not a NEED and not a RIGHT. When I was a kid and my family couldn't afford more than one or two games a year, we played the hell out of what we had. How do you think ANYONE beat Ninja Gaiden?

I don't know, I didn't think those families that couldn't afford more than one or two games a year would specifically pick Ninja Gaiden for a year. But I doubt you in your Ninja-Gaiden-beating-genius got a pirated version.
That and you're setting up a straw-man. Just because they're not some basic human necessity doesn't mean they're not popular. They pretty much save up for the PSP only.
Hell, most just get their PSP with CFW as standard from the shopowners here, with NBA 10 or Tekken 5DR standard and be fine with it. Then they can just go back to the shop and switch out the game for 10% of the cost of the original, while the ones with initiative just do it themselves for free. It's a lot better than paying above market price for the originals.
And UMDs aside, it's still MUCH cheaper than getting a PS3, PSN card load, and a working broadband connection to download originals.

This is bullshit. There is absolutely no evidence that these numbers are connected. How do they know how many of those people downloaded the game AND bought it later?

First off, stop assuming.

Reviews mean jack shit. I've tried games that got slammed by the reviewers and ended up loving them. I've bought the polished triple A titles and ended up hating them because they were nothing but eye-candy and button mashing. God of War is a great example. The kiddies love it because it makes them feel special. Everyone else realizes it's a rythm game with some violent eye-candy.
If I'd actually paid money for it before trying it I would have taken it right back to the store in disgust.
Crisis Core was just.. campy and dumb. Yes I know we all have to love everything Square Enix shits out... well I don't. If it's good I buy it if it isn't, I don't.
I currently own more original games than I can ever finish, yet I go out every month and buy another 2-3 new games, brand new. Why? Because they're good games and I want to see the developers make money off of them. I've bought Dawn Of War 1 about 3 times over with all the different 'collected' editions of it I've bought. (I've also downloaded it twice when I was stuck somewhere without discs)
I bought Dawn of War 2 online and THEN downloaded a pirated copy so I could play it without having to be logged onto the friggin net with stupid 'Games For Windows Live'.
Hell, Secret Agent Clank is still sitting in its shrink-wrap on my shelf. I played 2 hours of it, realized it was an awesome game, and went down to the game store the following Saturday and bought it.
So get off your silly little high-horse and go buy a dose of reality somewhere. You can also take your holier than thou attitude with you.

i guess there's no way to tell, you offer no evidence suggesting people other than yourself pirate and then pay for a game either.
my point was simply that its got to be depressing for a game developer to spend time making a great game, and as their reward seeing it pirated at great numbers.
other developers have gone on record stating they abandoned the PSP because of the rampant piracy

I totally agree that there are jerks out there that simply steal games without any intention of ever paying for them. Or lie to themselves saying they'll buy them 'soon'.
I also don't think this number is insignificant.
However my issue is that too many developers are jumping on this issue as the root of all problems, when very often the reason their game doesn't sell as much is because it IS crap. If all games on PSP CAN be pirated... why do some games still sell extremely well and others don't?
Has anyone who's fairly unbiased actually studied the numbers and tried to figure out what's happening? Find out WHY people are pirating without just assuming and also find out WHO.
For example, I live in Asia, and recently I was trying to purchase a copy of Blood Bowl for PSP. I can't get it anywhere no matter how hard I try, in fact online companies won't even ship here. So I eventually get told: "Oh, we won't ship to Asia because we're afraid it will just get pirated."
Seriously? So those of us living here who DO want a legit copy? What do we do? With no choice we hit up the pirate bay and download it. To this day if I can find a store, whether brick and mortar or online who will sell me the damned game I will happily give them my money plus extra for shipping.
So far they've tried a bunch of solutions to piracy (most apparently dreamed up by some suit in their ivory tower) and they haven't worked.
It's time to try some new approaches. Gathering some real, unbiased information would be a good start.

i live in Australia and import a lot of my games from Asia!
Q games IS trying a different approach, with their pixel junk games, they are cheaper than a UMD / Blu-ray game, available to anyone with a free PSN account.. they can't make it much easier to buy it really..
also the game is great!
They could do with some better marketing perhaps, but i already follow cuthbert on twitter, so bought the game as soon as it was available :|

Sometimes I wonder, how PSP be right now, if pirating didn't exist, and software sold like ps1 and ps2 games. What's sad is that a lot of my friends just laugh when I buy games acting as if game developers already have enough money. Not everyone in the business is Bobby Kotick and gets million dollar paychecks. Does everyone not remember a lot of studios has either downsized or closed in the past couple of years?
Even Madden had to call it quits on pc due to sales being low. Games just don't grow on trees. I'm not sure why people keep throwing egg in the face of hardworking indiviuals. If people want to boycott by pirating, go pirate rap/rock musicans or movie stars that flaunt their sales on the show Cribs!

I bought the PS3 version and thought it sucked. Worst in the series. Only redeeming factor was co-op. So screw this game.

I pirated this game so I could see if it was worth purchasing two copies of the game and another PSP for my S.O. to play with me.
It is, most definitely.
I agree most piracy is leeching money from developers, but sometimes it just isn't.

I guess I just don't get this line of thinking.
You steal a game. If you like it, hate it, think it's okay, YOU decide if you want to pay the developer or not?
No matter how anyone tries to justify this, it's theft - plain and simple. You may like this game, but what about 10 others you illegally download? Odds are, you will steal one of them because in your mind "it's not worth the price".
Well, i'm sorry. That decision is just not up to you.

@Dashiva
Um, no. If I don't like it I delete it. I purchased PixelJunk Monsters on the PS3 and its expansion. I wanted to see if there was a negative difference in the PSP port.
And to be honest, my PSP is the only modded piece of hardware I have, only because I enjoy having a portable NES and SNES.
Also, thanks for putting words in my mouth. If I like a game I always purchase it. Better luck next time.

I don't get it. Isn't it much much easier to play pirated games on the DS? (get a flashcart and u'r all set) How come nobody's thinking to stop making games on DS due to piracy?

You cant stop pirating but you can deter from it. Price your game at a lower than average price point and people who normally pirate games will find it hard not to buy it. The only reason why people pirate game is cause in there eyes some games just arent worth the money spent.

I believe you're looking for the "Ninja Tower"

I bought the game Day 1. I freaking love PJM. With that said, I couldn't play it for a few weeks because there is no way I'm going back to Sony's garbage dump of a firmware. What an inconvience that caused me, the honest costumer. So yes I downloaded a copy but I also bought it. Your piracy figures will be incorrect as I'm sure many people have done this.

well more proof that piracy is hurting everyone, yet the pirates keep claiming they are hurting no one

I don't think it's piracy alone that is reducing sales of PJM. The way content is displayed on the PSN store on PC is maddeningly obtuse (I can't attest to the PS3 store). I had no idea this game came out due to it being dumped into an unorganized "new releases" list.
Considering they just released a download only device, you'd think Sony would have made the PC store better so games like this aren't missed. Currently, the only easy way to find out what really is new is to go the PSN blog on Thursdays.

I get itsa handheld version, but honestly you can find Tower Defense games anywhere for free on the internet, while I certainly don't have the numbers to back it up something tells me everyone having already played this game for free has something to do with it.

i love my psp and the games that have been release but i cant lie either, i do pirate a few games here and there and use it for my emulators and psone games (i own on disc but not on psn besides FF7 and wild arms 1 & 2). I do buy games though, The games i support are quality games like god of war final fantasy dissidia, crisis core, disgaea 1 and 2 etc. i have no problems with buying a game for $40(even though its F#$@ng steep) as long as its a quality one.
