The November Xbox Live Dashboard Update -- which brings Facebook, Twitter, Last.fm and the Zune Video Marketplace to the Xbox 360 -- will soon be here. Joystiq has nabbed the update early, and we're here to share all of its secrets with you in the only way that we know how: A video tour! Above, you'll find a brief tour of all the new features. If there's a specific feature you'd like to know more about, simply click one of the the words below to watch a more detailed video all about it.
Note: We learned after publication that the abnormally priced movie rental has not yet been released in theaters. As such, it has a higher price.
I think that certain wireless keyboards do work, but don't quote me on that. As long as it doesn't require a driver install it should work, and since some wireless keyboard dongles will work without special drivers on the pc side, its worth a shot. It really comes down to trial and error. I dont imagine bluetooth dongles would work since those need both driver and stack support, both of which the xbox wont have since theres no bluetooth chip inside.
Just use a USB keyboard if you have one. I caught Major Nelson mentioning that in a status update while looking at the Facebokk section of the main video, pardon the mental diarrhea.
I ve been using a usb wireless keyboard for years on the xbox. its a kensington wireless keyboard and it works. It seems that it has a generic keyboard driver that supports usb.
For The House of the Devil Pricing: I believe it's 1500 MSP, and this is my theory, is because it's Pre-Release...It hasn't been released in theaters yet. I haven't looked at any of the other pricing for movies but I think that's why it's so high.
If it is the case of movies being offered as a download rent at the same time when movies come out to the theatres, I am seriously on the fence on this.
Yes it is a neat idea of being able to watch a movie in my home on opening night rather than going to a theatre. However, if it becomes common practice in the future it would literally kill the cinema business. When you can just invite a ton of people over to see a brand new movie for a couple dollars a person. Nothing can replace seeing a movie with that atmosphere of a huge crowd enjoying a flick together.
That being said, no studio in their right mind would ever allow their movies to be put up on digital download as opening release. there's just no money into it what so ever. They would lose 100's of millions of dollars a movie if this ever went through.
The only way i could see this becoming common practice are for made for TV movies, direct to BD/DVD movies, or limited showing movies.
What I love most about Facebook on XBL is FULL SCREEN PHOTOS! I despise Facebook's tiny 600x400 pics. My eyes aren't so good. They're long overdue for an option to choose the size of a photo.
Frankly I think the Facebook implementation looks great. It's just Facebook minus the millions of Farmville and other BS apps. Facebook was a lot better before it start turning into "post random app updates constantlybook"
Well doesn't look like something I'll use much if at all. I have all those apps on my phone. If one day they ever got a music app that would play during my games then I would care.
The reason why the prices seem to vary in the instances you chose are because you happened to pick out a film that is in a "Pre-theatrical release" window. Magnolia Pictures has started offering some select films via digital distribution before they even hit theaters and as such warrant a higher rental price.
Mutant Chronicles, The Great Buck Howard, and The Girlfriend Experience were all released on digital before they were put in theaters. Outside of these films, I've never seen prices vary too much if at all from 320/480 for your usual new release rentals...and seeing as I use my 360 a lot to watch movies digitally, I'd say I have some pretty good personal experience to go off of.
This update bricked my 360. Half hour after downloading it and trying out the new content, RROD. :/
On anther note, any idea why Last.fm isn't available in Canada? I have a premium Last.fm account that I use every day, and it'd be nice to use it on my 360 as well. Well, my new 360.
I like my xbox, but you would think with all the knowledge of MS that they would be ahead of the other gaming systems instead of behind them all. Its all nice and everything that you have added the oh so hard to figure out apps like facebook, twitter, and lastfm but seriously when are you going to move ahead of the other game systems. Maybe you are just waiting for the next system release (XBOX-Genesis, made that up) so that you can make even more money and produce even less then the next guy. There is seriously no reason other than you want to make more money that you haven't addressed more of the things your customers what to see.
