Beatles: Rock Band bests Guitar Hero 5 in U.S. Sept. sales
The Beatles: Rock Band's initial U.S. tour at retail has proven boast-worthy for its promoters. Following two promising platform appearances in NPD's top 10 software sales chart for September, MTV Games and Harmonix have declared B:RB "the top selling music video game in the U.S. for September." The Beatles–only game (released September 9) outsold Guitar Hero 5 (released September 1) with 595,000 units to 499,000 units in total U.S. sales for the month, according to a statement released by the NPD*. Additionally, charity-driven purchases of the "All You Need Is Love" DLC track exceeded 100,000 downloads on Xbox 360 in September.
The makers of B:RB have also rubbed in a few seemingly noteworthy facts; namely, (1) U.S. purchases of GH5 in September were eligible for a free mail-away copy of Guitar Hero: Van Halen, and (2) GH5 is available on one additional platform, PS2. Of course, Van Halen isn't exactly the American equivalent of The Beatles, and the PS2 is no longer the dominant platform to stage one's acts upon. Still, despite the staggering odds stacked against its success, B:RB managed to capture the mindshare of U.S. gamers. (And we all know that Americans like to speak their minds with their monies.)
The sales de-feat must feel good for MTV Games and Harmonix -- what with B:RB being burned in the sales competition with GH5 by the kingdom that birthed the band (see: Chart-Track UK September sales rankings posted after the break). What was it? Right: Guitar Hero 5 supposedly outsold The Beatles: Rock Band "2-to-1 in the UK."
So, score a victory for B:RB in the battle of the bands fought in U.S. retail last month. But let's not forget there's a bigger, "World War of Rock" being waged, as well. And our wallets are the oft-unreported collateral damage.
Chart-Track UK – All Formats (All Prices) Weekly Sales Ranks
September 6–12
Note: The Beatles: Rock Band released September 9 in the UK; Guitar Hero 5 released September 11.
*Update: While the NPD only publicly discloses U.S. sales numbers for the top 10 bestselling titles (by platform) per month, we can infer that PS3 sales of The Beatles: Rock Band totaled roughly 132,000 units. That is, total sales (595k units) minus sales on Xbox 360 (254k units) and Wii (209k units) leaves us with an approximate PS3 sales total of 132k units.
Unfortunately, with only the total sales (499k units) and Xbox 360 sales (211k units) known, we can't break down Guitar Hero 5 sales by platform. We can only conclude that Wii, PS3 and PS2 platform sales combined for roughly 288,000 units in total sales.

I'm still lost as to why it sold better here than in the UK of all places...
robert @ Oct 20th 2009 12:40PM
Because, in England, the Beatles are good, but Beyonce has the best....
You know what? THIS MEME NEEDS TO DIE!!!!
Ghen @ Oct 20th 2009 12:53PM
This just proves that UK gamers have bad taste.
Drunk Ste @ Oct 20th 2009 1:30PM
Because here in the UK Rock Band was released 6 months late and at a price no one could afford, it has no name recognition compared to Guitar Hero. I’m 29 and hardly anyone my age or below listens to The Beatles yet we are the people who buy the most games.
If I hadn't grown up listening to my dad play their songs on guitar I doubt I'd have any interest in The Beatles.
linebeginstoblur @ Oct 20th 2009 2:16PM
If you want it to die, don't start it. Then it's just wasting out time.
Brysonial the Bison @ Oct 20th 2009 6:25PM
Now we just need people to stop buying guitar hero completely. Its not getting any better band hero has what 7 good songs.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 20th 2009 12:38PM
What's this, the better product was victorious?
Huzzah!
TheDave @ Oct 20th 2009 12:55PM
Better Product?
I would hardly call a game with ONLY ONE band singing / playing nearly the same monotone sounds over and over and over and over again a "better product".
Besides, pretty much all the Beatles fans I know would buy millions of rolls of used up toilet paper if you told them that the Beatles had touched it.....
Yes, Activision is evil, and is the Microsoft of video game companies (hey, look, Microsoft getting beat at something they are notorious for!)
A better test of who make the better product will come next month with it will be:
Lego Rock Band _vs._ Band Hero
Originally, I was leaning towards L:RB, until I found out that it has ZERO online playability! (WTF HMX? Are you fucking kidding me?)
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 20th 2009 12:59PM
Yes clearly the Beatles are one of the most monotonous, unskilled bands of all time with no diversity of sound or tone.
Perhaps they could stand to learn something from Nickelback.
And I'm pretty sure the Lego vs Band Hero debate has already been sealed by the track lists.
t0ddd @ Oct 20th 2009 1:19PM
Well obviously we'll pass that trophy to the game with Taylor Swift in it!
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 20th 2009 1:28PM
I personally find Guitar Hero 5 to be a better product than The Beatles: Rockband but that's my humble and very personal opinion.
Ballistic H @ Oct 20th 2009 2:16PM
Beatles' songs are more family friendly (kids wouldn't understand the songs written when the Beatles were high anyway) than whatever's on GH5.
Ballistic H @ Oct 20th 2009 2:19PM
Btw, Beatles' background artwork is more interesting, diversified and different than the usual on-stage background.

I feel miserable for being so elated over this.... but jesus I hate Activision so bad....
This is not healthy.

It's healthy. So says 9 out of 10 doctors
Ryan @ Oct 20th 2009 1:02PM
Yeah, but the 10th doctor was discovered to be Kotick's Proctologist, so its really 9 out of 9 doctors.

I hear Kotics ass is so tight you could sharpen blades in it.

In before all the harmonix fanboys celebrate one band specific game while trashing either GH Metallica or Van Halen.
Young_Nastyman @ Oct 20th 2009 12:53PM
except this is a real BAND game, with 45 of that band's songs
not 25 songs and songs by bands that "influenced" them, like Weezer and Foo Fighters

Metallica sucks!
There, HAPPY NAO?!
Ghen @ Oct 20th 2009 1:10PM
I loved GH: Metallica as I love metallica. I also think The Beatles: Rock Band was a work of art worthy of such praise. I'm not a Beatles fan by any stretch (none of their songs are on my computer) but it was the better game by far.
GH: Van Halen doesn't even use the GH5 engine, no wonder they gave it away free.
GewurztraminerX @ Oct 20th 2009 10:45PM
GH:Metallica is still on my radar even though I'm mostly in the RB camp.
Christ-ian @ Oct 20th 2009 12:44PM

I think I speak for the entire Internet when I say, well done Harmonix, but the battle has only just begun.
Stevetrop @ Oct 20th 2009 12:48PM
This is the one time I want to see MTV games rub it in some one face. Namely Kotick though I'd prefer it would be dirt rather than game sales but you take what you can get.
JXCgunrunna @ Oct 20th 2009 12:52PM
Y would you want dirt rubbed in his face? I would like someone rub a slaughtering iron in his face. Or maybe a chain saw. No sir, dirt would not be the best object for him.
Ghen @ Oct 20th 2009 1:14PM
Of the available choices dirt offers the benefit of a shortened prison span for the rubber in question.
JXCgunrunna @ Oct 20th 2009 1:20PM
After this no dedi servers for MW2 thing, i would take the risk of getting caught.
Woz @ Oct 20th 2009 12:54PM
Didn't Activision proclaim a 2/1 victory over B:RB not long ago. Or if not proclaimed but estimated?
wormania @ Oct 20th 2009 12:57PM
Activision wasn't talking US-only.
Christ-ian @ Oct 20th 2009 12:53PM
Or I could have gone that route.... either works.
GiggMan @ Oct 20th 2009 12:55PM
I bought it along with GH5 and rarely play it at all. Having never listened to the Beatles I bought it solely on Joystiq fanboy hype like this was going to be the greatest music game ever. I learned two things not to listen to these people and that I think the Beatles music is boring. Plus it was just the same old Rockband game with Beatles music and theme.
I'm not a big rock fan by a long shot but in this case I like the variety of GH5 and Rockband 2 over the Beatles. It's just not my type of Music.
*Oh and by the way yes I am aware that stating my opinion and or saying something not possitive about the Beatles or Harmonix will get me downvoted to oblivion instantly*
elvor0 @ Oct 20th 2009 1:07PM
So you bought a game solely about the Beatles, having (somehow) never heard any of their music, didn't think to at least check on youtube to see if you did, and now you're complaining?
It's a music game, it is good based mainly on what MUSIC is in it, and some game play elements, what did you expect would happen?
I would say that's your own damn fault. Yes the people got excited because they like the Beatles, ALOT of people do, hence them being the most successful band in the history of ever, personally I cant stand them, but I appreciate why people do.
Jim @ Oct 20th 2009 1:09PM
Not everyone like the Beatles. I dont like them very much. I've claimed to hate them ... but that's not entirely true. They did have at least one good song per album after they got out of the teeny bopper pop. though most of the songs I enjoy werent on TB:RB.
I also do not think it is bad to be a fan of one thing or another. My past posts prove that I loath GH games, and prefer RB ... but thats my opinion and many disagree (hence why GH outsells RB even though RB has all its songs on one disk (well, two now), and has a bigger song selection overall.
Even the most open minded people (of which I like to consider myself) do not enjoy everything.
GiggMan @ Oct 20th 2009 1:16PM
elvor0:
I did the same thing when it came to GH and Rockband and found something to like out of each one. I even have the Metallica one and I believe as far as the music goes that one may be my favorite (close with GH2).
The Beatles one is just boring.
elvor0 @ Oct 20th 2009 1:25PM
Fair nuff, but in all fairness it was always advertised as only being beatles songs, so it couldnt have hurt to at least check the band out, given that info.
Troy Powers (PSN: TroyPowers) @ Oct 20th 2009 1:26PM
In the words of that great black poet, Flava Flav..."DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE!!!"
Jim @ Oct 20th 2009 1:01PM
RB would still have a better game if they came out with Rock Band : Dexys Midnight Runners, never mind one of the (if not THE) biggest bands of all time.
in response to tmacairjordan87, While GH:M and GH:VH ARE and WILL BE shit, its not because of the bands respectively. Both are fantastic classic bands who's music is great for this type of gaming (or any gaming for that matter). Its just sad that Activision/Neversoft took the reins and ruined potentially great games.
Personally, I am waiting for RB: The Rolling Stones.
hope hope hope hope
Now THAT would be a fucking epic game.
BTW ... yes it HAS to be RB because HMX makes music games fun and worth buying
Dopple Boppler @ Oct 20th 2009 1:46PM

I'm just happy to see HMX get a break. The "it's fun as hell" and "We always talked about the Fab Five beating the Fab Four" comments made by Activison were incredibly egotistic and cocky. Bastards.
