- Game Informer (93/100): "Borderlands attempts many things, which in this medium can often end with a laundry list of features but no fully-developed ones. This is one of the rare occasions where all of the new experiences a game brings to the table work out splendidly, especially when viewed as an entire package. Co-op is a blast, the variety of weaponry lends an addictive quality to the game that's rarely seen, and it maintains a distinct sense of humor and personality."
- IGN (88/100): "Gearbox's Borderlands is without a doubt a slick, satisfying hybrid title for those who know what to expect. If you're a shooter fan curious what the world of Pandora is all about, then you should know that this is a product built on a foundation of statistical progression, character customization, and one that holds item acquisition high above interesting quest structure and narrative. At the same time, it plays like a shooter, requiring twitch skills to dominate the droves of enemies that stand in between you and your search for a mysterious vault."
- GameTrailers (84/100): "Borderlands is a bit of a grind-fest, but that's part of the fun, as you take on tougher enemies and hunt for bigger and badder gear. The co-op play is integrated seamlessly, and there's a huge world to explore with friends or on your own."
- Giant Bomb (4/5): "The structure of Borderlands makes it feel like an MMO game that doesn't require you to rely on groups of other players to enjoy. Though it's probably better when you're playing online with friends, playing alone is still perfectly fine. It's also one of those games that's so strong in parts that its shortcomings become almost glaring by comparison. As such, the game's barebones story, lackluster AI, and insufficient player trading options are real disappointments that prevent the game from reaching its full potential."
Metareview: Borderlands

Initial reviews of Gearbox's Borderlands (out this week) have been fairly positive. There's some crosstalk about how to define Borderlands' genre, but it might be most simply described as a Diablo-esque shooter. While you can take the game on alone, the online and couch co-op modes seem to be universally praised for their ability to melt away the bland elements of Borderlands. It's much better with friends, apparently.

I've probably put 5 hours in alone on it so far and it's great. I didn't know it came with some exclusive gamestop weapons, but they make the beginning of the game a lot easier, as you basically get level 9-10 weapons at level 3. For example, the gamestop assault rifle does 36 damage per bullet compared to about 6-7 for the one you start the game with. I believe it also has a 104% damage bonus on it too and something else ridiculous for beginners (i'm playing the soldier btw). You pretty much take out everything in a couple hits with that until level 9ish.
But yeah, great game. Well done Gearbox, love the teleporting grenades too.

Will you be playing with friends or going single player?

My campaign will probably be mostly single, as I'm already level 12 and my friends don't even have the game yet lol. Gonna have to make a new character so I can play with them.

picked up this game for $40! woot! Love a good deal! I wish all games had an opening day price of $40, I think they would sell a helluva lot better! (unless the game sucks ... actually ... )

I'm literally trying to choose between this, Uncharted 2, and Demon's Souls, since I cut my games budget way down. I really wanted Uncharted 2, bu I'm hearing it's just like 1, so I think it can wait. I liked Fallout 3, but this looks like WAY more fun, as I thought there were too many flaws in Fallout's hybrid execution. Finally, a few weeks ago, I didn't even know about Demon's Souls, but I've heard so much about it being a super tough game, and I love difficult games.
But this looks really good too. Ugh.

as great as Uncharted 2 is going to be (I'm definitely picking it up), I absolutely love co-op, more so than single player or deathmatch, so Borderlands is actually higher on my list. If you don't feel the same way though, Uncharted 2 looks like the better game for most people

Except Uncharted 2 also has 3 player co-op!
Levi-
We've been boys for a while and Ill give it you as honest as always. Uncharted 2 is the best game this generation. It's set such a high standard other good devs look bad in comparison. I'm in the midst of Don Souls and were it not for Uc2 it might be the best PS3 game ever. It's right up your alley because you have a penchant for liking really tough games. You can't go wrong with either but Uc2 has a package of epic single player, great co-op and great competitive with varied game modes.
Can't speak on borderlands but Id pick Uc2 if I were u...

I haven't treid Uncharted 2 yet but I like Demon's Souls over Borderlands.
Bordelands is well done but it almost seems like Fallout 3 Lite. I'm playing the heck out of it but I can't put my finger on what it is missing.

Uncharted 2's single player experience was hands down the best I have ever played and most likely will ever play. It is so seamless that it is hard to put into words. The only way I can describe it is that you are playing as the main character in a bad ass movie, the character development is top notch. People complain it is too short but it took me about 8-10 hours and that is satisfactory in my book.
The MP is fun but after reaching level 15 it is kind of meh. (I can't understand how some people are already level 40 and up, don't you have a job/life?) It won't last especially with all the bad ass MP games coming out soon.
Definitely worth the $60 but I was happy with a rental.

The Co-Op on the PS3 is really messed up. The Gearbox guys are aware of it and looking into it.

Should be interesting to see how the gaming public receives this, as I see a lot of 'grass roots' support from the gaming media I'll call it. If it weren't for the fact that I check Joystiq or a few other sites fairly often I'd have rather limited, if any, exposure to this title...

Trying to hold my excitement until Friday here in Australia but I am looking forward to it, I wanted Brutal Legend as well but that can wait till its cheaper.

thanks for the comments dudez ^_^ I gotta say that I'm not a huge fan of co-op, so that doesn't make a diff to me. I forgot to mention that Brutal Legend was on my list before I read that the game is only like 6 hours long.
I'm going to go check out Demon's Souls at a buddy's place whenever I get my eBay package in. I bought a lot of a bunch of NES game boxes for my collection of completes, and I'm going to his used games store to fill the boxes with carts :P He gets boners for Demon's Souls, so I'll be able to check it out there and see if it's something I gotta get ASAP. Otherwise it'll probably be Uncharted 2.

Loving the game so far. My only complaint so far is the vehicle controls. Very skiddish(word?). Though the only thing that should matter is the shooting aspect, which is rewarding and well done. Good job Gearbox.

Game of the Year 2009 for me. I just finished a 4 hour marathon of co-op with 2 of my best friends, and, this is the ultimate game to play coop in. This game is much, MUCH better than I ever expected, and, I am glad I bought this day one.

The game is very fun, whether you're playing solo or co op.
I'm playing as Brick. He's taller than the other classes, so you may have trouble finding midgets. :P And when he goes into berserker mode, he's practically SCREAMING constantly. It's hilarious.

If anyone is interested I stumbled upon the artist's website that did the cover art for Borderlands. His style is dark, dreary, and amazing and has a lot of prints that are worth buying and framing. Check him out you will not be disappointed.

Wait, so Borderlands (which I really am excited to play) is really just Hellgate: London (the original Diablo-FPS) with better guns?
Now I'm even more excited!
