Namco Bandai introduces gravity-flipping shooter Inversion

click to fall up into our gallery
The third-person shooter takes place during an invasion by the alien
The player, as cop Davis Russel or, uh, cop's neighbor Leo Delgado, is armed with a Grappler weapon that allows the manipulation of gravity to move giant objects around. This permits the player to move enemies' cover or make their own out of items in the environment. Or to just throw stuff.
Inversion will ship sometime in 2010 on Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3.

Oh great, another shooter with a gimmick
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 20th 2009 4:01PM
I was just about to post the same thing.
I'll save game producers 10 years of effort RIGHT NOW:
1. FPS + a gun that reduces friction
2. FPS + a gun that steals enemies' thoughts
3. FPS + a gun that makes things dark instead of bright
4. FPS + a gun that shoots acid with real-time flesh deformation
5. FPS + a gun that sends enemies to an alternate dimension
6. FPS + a gun that is sentient and VERY hungry
7. FPS + a gun that shoots chainsaws
8. FPS + a gun that destroys your EXPECTATIONS of what guns do
9. FPS + a gun that shoots soap
10. FPS + a gun that only works if you believe in it
Bill$ @ Oct 20th 2009 4:14PM
good thing its TPS, no? ...Señor!
Jampirow @ Oct 20th 2009 4:27PM
Hasn't #7 been done to death?
CtrlBurn @ Oct 20th 2009 4:32PM
inFamous is a shooter with a gimmick, and it's fun as hell. This looks like it could go that route, if there's enough fun stuff to do in the game world.
MrAlex @ Oct 20th 2009 4:43PM
@ WiNG #6 is not generic, that would be plain awesome, Imagine if they had a talking gun like the talking swords in DMC3, could be cool.
Vidikron @ Oct 20th 2009 5:01PM
I think R&C games have done most of that list, or had items very close to them. Seriously.
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 20th 2009 5:03PM
@ctrlburn
Sure, you could look at it that way (I get the whole "it's just a shooter but with electricity thing"), but really there's more to it than just being a shooter.
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 20th 2009 5:39PM
Honestly, developers need to wisen up; a game does not a gimmick make. I was being all dumb and looking forward to Section 8, but once again, it's a generic FPS with a single gimmick. Sigh...
thatguy @ Oct 20th 2009 5:50PM
Japanese gaming is diying
Sly @ Oct 20th 2009 7:12PM
@CHE
yeah, but it's an awesome gimmick.
dgknight500 @ Oct 20th 2009 8:10PM
Hey, at least he's not another bald space marine...
BSprague @ Oct 20th 2009 9:47PM
@Wing
Sounds kind of like a Ratchet and Clank game. ;)
Silencio @ Oct 20th 2009 3:37PM
It might be cool. But I can't help thinking of Fracture.
freaparn @ Oct 20th 2009 3:51PM
Fracture was the first thing that sprang (sprung?) to mind with me as well. Hopefully this time it's more than just a physics gimmick with a rough coat of primer on it.
russell @ Oct 21st 2009 9:07AM
Yeah, fracture, what a shitty game.
CPRxChris @ Oct 20th 2009 3:38PM
Enough with the first-person shooters already. Give it a rest.
greg (peevmyster) @ Oct 20th 2009 3:58PM
It's 3rd person, and if you don't like, then don't buy. It's not like they are going to stop making them because you are sick of them.
Bill$ @ Oct 20th 2009 3:58PM
its a third person shooter.. read Read READ!!!. btw doesnt this sound/look like a PSN/XBLA game to anyone else?
CPRxChris @ Oct 20th 2009 5:53PM
Wow, it does third-person shooter. Fail on my part.
Obie @ Oct 20th 2009 3:39PM
Looks like they grabbed the 3rd person shooting from Gear of War, the gravity gun from Half Life 2 and the pockets of anti-gravity of Dead Space.
Meh.
Geist @ Oct 20th 2009 3:47PM
You make it sound like those are the only games to ever feature those mechanics.
Obie @ Oct 20th 2009 3:54PM
Nope, those were the first that came to mind.
Chas Winterbottom @ Oct 20th 2009 4:59PM
That sounds like a winning combo to me. All the best parts of three different great games roled into one. Why not?
It's like a video game three way!
Obie @ Oct 20th 2009 5:44PM
@Chas, yeah but a 3 way with the ugly sisters of the original 3. ;)
Chas Winterbottom @ Oct 20th 2009 6:35PM
@Obie, Ha! Well played.
HeXeN @ Oct 20th 2009 3:44PM
"third-person shooter people"
Perhaps the game would have sounded more interesting if the invasion was actually by aliens luchadores; God knows how many games have been centered around alien invasions.
Geist @ Oct 20th 2009 3:48PM
Aiyaiyai, we're coming to eenvade you, seeniors!
*double-suplexes tank*
Bill$ @ Oct 20th 2009 4:23PM
maybe theyre trying to send a message in the B-Movie/game type of way? and if youve watched enough b movies, you can expect stereotypes.. lol Luchadores.. this game sounds like a big campy cheesefest already. I WANT IT!!
Meh @ Oct 21st 2009 10:42AM
You mean like in Sam & Max?
Whoops. I think that's a spoiler.
emmzee @ Oct 20th 2009 3:45PM
That plot makes perfect sense! wink wink
... you just said "wink wink" out loud.
No I didn't! raise middle finger
johnb @ Oct 20th 2009 3:51PM
I wonder if this is the movie tie-in to Dark Knight director Christopher Nolan's upcoming film of the same name. If it is he has been trying to keep the premise of the movie under wraps and here is the game developer spilling the beans. From what I could gather from the teaser trailer it involved gravity and altered physics so this is probably the same.
Babel @ Oct 20th 2009 3:58PM
Nolan's movie is called Inception, so I doubt these two are related.
Having said that, that movie (and the thumping music in the teaser) was the first thing that sprung to mind when I saw the article. Plus the weird physics link you pointed out.
john.barber @ Oct 21st 2009 5:22AM
Good catch Babel. I should have looked up the movie name again before posting. It was so close I just knew it had to be one and the same. lol
Dirty @ Oct 20th 2009 3:49PM
They might need those bubbles to flip things when the sales figures come in.
uncle jesse @ Oct 20th 2009 4:07PM
Zing!
Sorry to burst your bubble.
Arnie @ Oct 20th 2009 3:50PM
I always wanted to play the guy next door in video games, seems this game will make my wish come true.
WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 20th 2009 4:04PM
Hurray moar shooters.
greenpangolin @ Oct 20th 2009 4:13PM
Oh, when will game companies learn -_-
BoringK @ Oct 20th 2009 4:14PM
I can't believe no one's mentioned Metal Storm yet. Shameful.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metal_Storm_%28video_game%29
METAL STORM!
johnb @ Oct 20th 2009 4:15PM
Good catch Babel. I should have checked the movie name again before posting. Sounded so much like the same thing. lol
Anonymouse @ Oct 20th 2009 4:18PM
I've been on the internets too long... I read that as "Click to fap in our gallery"...
Curse you b...
Jampirow @ Oct 20th 2009 4:29PM
This makes me feel the same way I felt when Koei showed Quantum and Konami showed Splatterhouse.
"The hell? This is a Namco Bandai game? Seriously?"
MrAlex @ Oct 20th 2009 4:37PM
Will this game also feature SUPER-COOL-GAME-CRIPPLING-ONLINE-LAG!!!!
Timeshift was an awful gimmicky game, this looks no different.
Chas Winterbottom @ Oct 20th 2009 4:54PM
This game is going to feature co-op so your neighbor can play as, (heh!) your neighbor.
Won't you be my neighbor?
ChomskyKnows @ Oct 20th 2009 5:09PM
I've already played Prey....
And before TimeShit (I think I spelled that right), I had already played Fear...
These guys always seem to use a gimmick that has already been done before except better...wonder if they have a portal mechanic up their sleeve somewhere...
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Oct 20th 2009 5:33PM
Yay...more shooters...yay...I'm glad it's not in first person...but it's still a shooter, another shooter...yay shooters...
TIRED OF THIS GENRE. Originality people, we need creativity.
MRLN (The Comment God) @ Oct 20th 2009 5:42PM
Gravity guns?
Eeeeeey I like those!
Simstim @ Oct 20th 2009 7:05PM
Timeshift was a POS so I wont be buying this game even if it is good just to spite them. Worst game purchase this gen. Is it so hard to make a good rail shooter? HDTVs are perfect for them.
Porkfist @ Oct 20th 2009 7:45PM
I've been a cop for 12 years now and I'm still waiting for someone to give me a peice of alien technology........
