Yasunori Mitsuda is the composer behind some of the gaming industry's most moving soundtracks, including the accompaniment for Chrono Trigger and Chrono Cross. His work was recently honored by the video game music preservationists of OverClocked ReMix, who recently released a re-imagination of what many consider to be Mitsuda's magnum opus: The musical compositions of Xenogears.
The album, which the group has been working on since 2006, comes in two parts: "Humans," which focuses on natural sounds and acoustic instruments, and "Gears," which features electronic instruments and darker selections from the soundtrack. It's the group's most impressive endeavor to date -- and at the low, low price of free, you've got no reason to avoid it.

Ehhhh I've been listening to it for the past 30 mins and so far the "human" side is not very impressive. Sounds like a bunch of people with expensive samples who don't know how to mix or produce anything properly. And many of the arrangements are poorly crafted on top of that. :(
Still, there's also some good stuff in here, at least worth a download since it's free.

Is it better than playing the game? No? Okay.

Maybe half of the CD is intentionally bad, just like only Disc 1 of Xenogears is worth playing. (I can't be the only one that didn't like the direction of disc 2)

That's going to happen in any fan remix scene. But we get crappy music regularly even in mainstream albums that you pay for, so why should this be any different?
Anyway, not everyone is going to like everything on OCRemix. But I guarantee you there's something worth listening to. It's usually best to find some of your favorite remixers, and listen to their stuff. But always stay open to newbies, there's some great stuff out there.
If you're looking to rock out, start with Sixto Sounds. He's got some OCRemix submissions, and most of his stuff is on his website.

Now if they could re-release the game on the XBLA or the US PSN (Wishful thinking I know...) everyone would win...

I know a few people who would be very interested if Xenogears were available on any of the current platforms (excluding the PS2). I would also hope for something better than the PS1 emulation on PSN. Honestly I'd think they could add some anti aliasing when a game is zoomed in. For example FFVII on the PSP can't be that taxing on the system to exclude some kind of graphical enhancement, be it optional or not.

Words cannot describe the awesomeness of OCRemix as a whole. There's stuff on almost anything you want (even a crazy remix of the Max Payne theme! Go check it out, it's weird). The best stuff by far, in my opinion, is the Team ICO remixes for obvious reasons. Shame that there's only a couple of them though.
If you're a gamer, you MUST visit OCRemix and stock the f*ck up on some tunes.

There is considerable truth to this comment. Also, the gears half of this release is considerably better than the human half.

I've completely given up on OCR. It got too big and popular, all of the music started sounding the same, and the people were jerks.
Plus many of those remixes are just terrible. Trance mixes suck and they're just lazy ways of remixing songs. Be creative for a change.

when i first heard of OCR, i thought it would be awesome... video games, remixes, woo hoo....
then i realized a good majority of it is crap, and the cream of the crop is mediocre at best.

They put out a few catchy tunes back in the day - Mazedude probably being my favorite remixer. Not so much lately. Also, their forums are indeed overrun with douchebags. Makes Joystiq look like a daycare.

I don't know if any project OCR ever does will be able to top Relics of the Chozo or Kong in Concert.

I'm more interested in Xenosaga, having learned three of its songs on the piano.

Chrono Cross was Mitsuda's best game soundtrack for me. Everything he has worked on has its gems but I loved almost everything in Chrono Cross. Although, it took me a second play through to enjoy it even more.
Then again I'm one of the rare few that enjoyed the game itself since I got over it as a "sequel" to trigger and love it for what it was not what it should have been in terms of the trigger universe.

Man, I always get bummed out reading people's reactions to OCReMix projects outside the site. I always love them and then I go to places like Joystiq or other forums and people always crap all over them. What a shame, too, because most of the people at OCR are great musicians.
I've never played Xenogears but I might give this a listen because I do like OCR.

An "accompaniment" to the Chrono games? Mitsuda did almost all of it himself. He worked so hard that he got sick and Uematsu had to do a few for CT. Uematsu's work is the accompaniment.

My favorite OCRemix release is the Chrono Symphonic album. It's Chrono Trigger's music imagined as if it were scoring a Chrono Trigger movie. They did a really good job.
I actually really like what I've heard of this Xenogears album so far too. Keep it up OCRemix!

I'm enjoying the Human disc so far. the arranged symphonies take the melodies i know and love and put a new perspective on them. for those who enjoy symphonies and video game music this is a treat. of course it's got nothing on Creid, but that's because that album came from Yasunori himself. still this is nicely done.
all the naysayers sound like they have a bone to pick with OCRemix, so maybe you all should overlook that. i've never heard of them before, so try approaching the selection that way.

I dislike Creid. Too many songs on that album with vocals and I always hate when they slap lyrics over VG music that I already know and love.

I should have bothered to do something for this project, but all the decent tracks were taken by the time I noticed it.
As compensation to my loving fans, here is my first remix ever, which happens to be Xenogears and FUCKING METAL:

I would prefer you ignore that it exists because it is not very good. My later stuff is much better, but oh well.

It's been a few years, so I'd forgotten a lot of the story, but now that I think about it, it actually gets worse. DJPretzel, the site's owner, decided to add a huge sidebar to the entire web-site. It added a bunch of extraneous links that stretched the page, and added a lot of whitespace. Pretty much everyone complained about it, and rather than removing it he banned a lot of them from the forums. At the time, the Unmoderated subforum was more of a community, and had members that had been around longer than most of the come-and-go members in General Discussion. Since they were more well-known, they were singled out, and some people waned to "do something about" Unmod.
Their judging panel, who approve or deny submissions, were for some reason given moderator powers on the forums. One of them, ZIrcon, got his girlfriend Pixietricks on the panel (nepotism is awesome!), and she started having an influence on the site that some members didn't like. I was pretty ambiguous on her, up until anyone that criticized her (constructively or not) started getting banned. Of course, the more people that got banned, the more people started to backlash against her, causing (you guessed it) more people to be banned.
Eventually, at an event one year in which all the judges and DJPretzel were present, a fan of the site who happened to have posted in Unmod all of 2 or 3 times was also at the event taking pictures (of the whole event, not just the judges). They somehow got it into their heads that heads that he was "spying" on them, and when he made a thread posting the pictures. His intention was just to show what was going on at the event, but he got banned for the thread. Huge backlash, everybody gets mad, a lot of people get banned, and later that night DJPretzel deleted the subforum and childishly hosted a video of them cheering as he clicked the delete button.
After that I've never bothered to check back in on the site, and I refuse to support anything they do when they treat their fans like that. It's a shame that such talented people are also so arrogant and infantile.
