'Civilization Network' announced for Facebook, arriving in 2010

Sid Meier has announced a Facebook version of the epic Civilization franchise. Dubbed Civilization Network, the game will make its way to the popular social networking site sometime in 2010. The game designer notes on the CivNet Facebook page that the company will be on the lookout for beta testers soon.
Meier mentions that the game will offer everything people love about Civ in a "fully persistent environment" and that it'll be "free to play." Coincidentally, Meier's announcement comes soon after Brian Reynolds, who designed Civilization II and Alpha Centauri, took the job of "chief designer" at social gaming developer Zynga. Apparently the two strategy designers see some major opportunities in the social gaming genre.

I hope it's better than the last CivNet. It was the only game in the entire series, or even with Sid Meier's name on it, that I found awful. It was nothing more than Civ2 with a broken online system. I think it's a bad idea to dust off that old, failed name.

CivNet was Civ 1 with multiplayer, not Civ 2. It wasn't terrible, it was exactly like the original, except it ran in Windows 3.1 and was slow (on my 386 anyway).

But.. But... Facebook games are supposed to be lame money-grabs!

Oh my god. This could be insanely good.

This is good. I'm always looking for something besides FarmVille to occupy myself with.

I've resisted Farmville, but I may not be able to resist Sid Meier.
JohnHeist @ Oct 21st 2009 7:28PM
My roommates and friends all play those games. Roller Coaster stuff, YoVille, Farmville...but I don't think I'll be able to resist some free CIV sitting there.
Damn you Sid Meier.

Now that you mention it: Where's my Alpha Centaury 2? To me it was the best civ game to date. It was like 4 but better! :P
BigD145 @ Oct 21st 2009 9:53PM
Whelp. That's the end of that.
Yamikotai @ Oct 23rd 2009 7:18PM
What I really want is a mixture of the unit customisation and cool alien barbarian fungus thing from Alpha Centauri, mixed in with everything that made Civ IV good. Also, bring back the temple/capital thing from Civ III (and AC), and the City View from Civ II! Totally pointless features but they were what made Civ fun, seeing your hard-spent turns slowly building the city.
Yamikotai @ Oct 23rd 2009 7:19PM
Comment fail, intended for dextro just up there.
