Painkiller: Resurrection demo raises the stakes
We've heard literally nothing from JoWood Interactive's reboot of the purgatorial stake-gun shooter, Painkiller: Resurrection, since it was first announced back in April. Therefore, we see this news post as providing two important pieces of information, the first being that the game apparently hasn't been canceled. This is evidenced by the second fact: A single-player demo for the title is now available to download.
With our thrilling, fast-paced lives as internet journalistas, we don't have the time to download the 1.3GB demo, burn the .iso file onto a DVD, then play the thing. We're hoping you can do those things for us, then relate to us the important bits. Like, for instance, the status of the lightning/shuriken gun. If it's absent, you better believe we're starting a petition.

It should do well after the original was promoted by Yahtzee as one of his personal favorites.

I had no idea people actually cared for his opinion. I thought that was some type of gimmick he had going. Maybe I should watch an episode? Its been a long time.-

The developers of Painkiller said that the sales for that game went up considerably after his review.
Hell, even the developers themselves like to watch his strange brand of reviewing to the point that they even take on Yahtzee's requests occasionally.

Steam put it on sale and stuck it up on their front page with a Yahtzee quote in their banner after his review - and I actually bought it as a result.
P.S. it's not very good

Actually I loved the original Painkiller as well. Really good game. The sequel was balls though.

The original Painkiller Boss fights are amazing. More amazing than even more modern FPS. If you haven't played far enough to experience the boss fights keep going. Painkiller was a great game.

+1. Priest is not dead yet.

Whatever, I don't remember it being all that awesome. Give me more story, I say!
sleepypersons @ Oct 21st 2009 8:36PM
They some how have to convince me that its not just do the same thing over and over now bored. If its like Serious Sam though then I will consider it.

?????????????????????
"burn the .iso file onto a DVD, then play the thing."
The Baron @ Oct 21st 2009 8:38PM
Yeah, is that actually required?
Pretty lame if so. Even fifth-rate eastern european developers usually manage one convenient .exe
SeriousKriss @ Oct 21st 2009 8:51PM
Just unzip it like any other archive, then you can install it normally.
I have no idea why it's in ISO either though.
sonicspike41 @ Oct 21st 2009 9:15PM
You could also use Daemon Tools I'm sure.
It creates a fake DVD drive that Windows believes is real. It then loads the .iso file as if it were a dvd stuck into that drive.
AoE @ Oct 21st 2009 9:25PM
@sonicspike41,
That's kind of overkill when you can just extract the files from the iso using your unzip/unrar program of choice. Also, daemon tools doesn't play nicely with certain drm schemes... just having it installed will cause some games to not fire up at all, so it's not an advisable install unless you need image-mounting software in general.
Einhanderkiller @ Oct 21st 2009 9:53PM
If this demo really is in .iso format, then it's the first of its kind I've ever seen. It makes no sense as to why they would do this. Maybe it's just a mistake on their part. :/
Alan Strangis @ Oct 21st 2009 11:48PM
If you download it here...
http://www.bigdownload.com/games/painkiller-resurrection/pc/painkiller-resurrection-demo/
Then it's a standard zip file with install.
I started the ISO download from one of the other links, and it was taking forever. I hit the bigdownload.com link, and it downloaded in 2 minutes on a 100Mbps connection, so there's no throttling on their server.
Alan Strangis @ Oct 21st 2009 11:50PM
PS: from what I played of it, it was alright. It's Painkiller, it's not like it's got a meaningful story. I don't know if I would put up with a whole game of that, but can't really judge until it's out.
Paulmichael @ Oct 21st 2009 9:22PM
No need to burn the iso to a disc unless you are really desperately out of space. Use WinRAR to extract the installer files like any other archive, or Daemon Tools or some other software to mount it on a virtual drive. :) Saved you a coaster right there.
MuToiD_MaN @ Oct 21st 2009 9:54PM
Daemon Tools for a Demon Shooter.
MRLN (The Comment God) @ Oct 21st 2009 10:33PM
That's kinda big for a demo, isn't it? Or at least too big for a game that is about as inspired as a snuggie.
Also, I may be that much of a Zelda-obsessive, but does that picture remind anyone of the Bridge of Hylia in Twilight Princess?
pika2000 @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:05AM
I like the original Painkiller. I'm tired of a lot of "newer" FPS where you spend most of your time NOT shooting (hiding, sneaking, strategizing, etc). I missed the good ol FPS where you just need to run and shoot anything that moves, and then shoot some more stuff. However, Painkiller has some boring moments where nothing is going on and you're just trying to find the check point. I wish it could be more like Serious Sam 1.
t_m @ Oct 22nd 2009 6:58AM
Why can't you guys review the demo? Why do we have to do it for you? If i do, will you give me a cut of the ad revenue for this page? Thought not.
Oh well, here goes anyway: It's exactly the same as the old painkiller.
(which means good weapons, interesting enemies, interesting looking levels BUT terrible pacing and bad level design).
PS/ If you want a sequel to the original Painkiller, you should play Necrovision.. it's by the same guys. The later painkiller sequels are all by a group of modders, and not much good.
Alex @ Oct 22nd 2009 9:15AM
No, this demo isn't the same as the original Painkiller. It's worse than Overdose which was barely playable itself. The level design is so poor that no mere words would do it justice. It's unbelievable that any publisher would put this out, it's honestly the worst game I've ever played.
I suspect that JoWood won't need to sell many copies to make money off of this.
zoolman1987 @ Oct 22nd 2009 4:10PM
STOP! THIS DEMO IS WRONG!
It's ALPHA version.

I look forward to the real beta demo then.
And what about Will Rock?
http://www.gamespot.com/pc/action/willrock/index.html
If games in the Serious Sam category are getting a once-over, Will Rock deserves one. That game was "almost" in many respects, and if the IP exists still and could be given some attention, it could be a good shooter franchise.
