I admit, that looks good.
It's a good thing you'll never notice any of it 99% of the time while you're playing.
INNUENDO 64 @ Oct 22nd 2009 4:40PM
and itll be a little while before we have a nice selection of graphics cards that can take advantage of all of DX11's new features
Wes @ Oct 22nd 2009 4:44PM
Not a little while. There's already a full-range of cards from ATI from budget cards to enthusiast cards.
The cheapest card is the 5750 which costs $109.00 MSRP. Its cheaper than the xbox 360 hard drive or wireless adapter n :D. Next is the 5750 that's about $150, then the 5850 thats 250ish, then the 5870 that is 320ish and in November arrives the 5870x2.
Its just nVidia that has nothing but they've been extremely late to even dx10.1
LaughingTarget @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:16PM
Not only that, the Nvidia DX 10.1 card is a piece of junk that's targeted at the "I only have $60 to spend and want a video card" market, but is $20 too expensive.
kojo87 @ Oct 22nd 2009 11:52PM
i feel like hardly any games really took advantage of DX 10.1. i play 90% of my games through Steam. any game that runs on the Source engine (ie HL2, TF2, Portal, L4D) still run in DX9. not sure about L4D2 though. anyone know?
i have two crossfired HD4870s (1GB GDDR5 each) paired with an AMD Phenom II 940 and it handles everything i throw at it at 1920x1200 at about 200fps. and i only have an AM2+ board with DDR2 RAM. i will be holding off the 5000 series for a while. but a 6 monitor setup would be super epic
Fernando Rocker @ Oct 22nd 2009 4:37PM
The video would have been better if you guys had a better video player... seriously, the quality is very bad and as extra, it's filled with ads... no, I don't want to join Fog of War (really, that was a real ad) even with free unlimited play.

Oh thanks Joystiq, I did always want to turn myself into a cartoon! And cotton is really relevant to my interests!
Seriously, joystiqs video player needs to die.
Orchard Pear @ Oct 22nd 2009 4:53PM
Learn to Adblock?
I dunno. I've never once seen an advertisement on a Joystiq video...
LaughingTarget @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:17PM
Unfortunately, adblock doesn't seem to work on the crap that pops up in the middle of the video.
ALBGunner04 @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:23PM
Ad Block actually blocks the video player itself. It just stays at "Loading Video" for me. Viddler is the only player that does this for me, and even if I add the site as an exception, disabling it only works.
CynicalStrike @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:38PM
I've got AdBlock Plus on, and the video player works fine, without any pop-ups. That said, it doesn't work like that on The Escapist, so I have it disabled to watch ZP.
XGM @ Oct 22nd 2009 7:12PM
Never saw ads myself, ad blocking FTW !!!
Ritz @ Oct 22nd 2009 7:15PM
BigDownload has copies of the video, that I assume are much better quality that you can download. I agree. The video in the flash player was kinda gross lookin' :\

Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 22nd 2009 7:21PM
If you're into the PC news, BigDownload is definitely where it's at. Even if you're not, any trailers from games that also come to PC, will be hosted in very HQ @BD. I wish they had their own tab on the goddamned Joystiq mainpage.
Tiptup300 @ Oct 22nd 2009 10:56PM
Hey I happen to love the video viewer. I always seem to forget my birthday, but with joystiq I could never forget what it is. Jan. 01, 1800

DiRT 2 is a great game. I was addicted to the PS3 version for a very long time. It's good to see that PC gamers will have more to look forward to with the delay.
SpaceFox @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:00PM
Really? Hm, I bought it(for PS3) as a placeholder with the ToysRUs B2G1 free sale. Mainly because I couldn't think of a third game I wanted just in case BestBuy(they pricematched) screwed me over and said, "No you can't trade that in".
Haven't opened it but I bought it because my dad was interested in it, so he said in case BB denies me that he'll just keep it and give me the cash. Should he? He loves the Gran Turismo series but I'm not sure how he'll like this type of racer. He didn't really like Motorstorm, and he's not into online gaming just yet.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:06PM
Well. Personally I've always been a big fan of the off-road racing that is offered with Gran Turismo. You know, the rally stuff. And I think that DiRT 2 fits that style perfectly in almost every way. Some may argue that there is not enough rally in DiRT 2 because they westernized the series, but it all depends on what you're looking for.
He can definitely get a lot of enjoyment out of the single player in DiRT 2 without ever needing to go online, but if he is ever tempted to it is not really that intimidating. It is definitely more of a sim racer like Gran Turismo with only a few touches of arcade racing which you would find in a game like Motorstorm. For example, the ability to rewind time if you wreck your car.
WiredKnight: Keeper of Threads @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:13PM
It's less that they're westernizing the series, and more that they're following the trends of the sport. Events like WRC have been declining in popularity (it's telling that Subaru has pulled out of it) in favor of smaller, quicker events like rallycross.
Dale @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:29PM
I bought it on the 360... I am not a fan of the controls, at all. The slightest nudge and you're pulling a donut down a straight.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Oct 22nd 2009 5:33PM
It's realistic. It definitely took some getting used to but after awhile I became grateful that they made it as loose as they did. It helps give the edge in multiplayer against those who buy DiRT 2 assuming it will control like Burnout Paradise.
Durden @ Oct 22nd 2009 6:11PM
The controls are perfect in my opinion. I use the controller and racing wheel and both feel great. I think there is plenty of Rally. Sure there is tons of other race types but all are great fun. Open that bad boy up and put it in!

Due to Vista's epic shittyness, lots of people don't even have DX10 yet. Me included. I have a DX10 card, but I went back to XP pretty much as soon as I tried Vista out. Waiting on the okay to get 7 before I even THINK of updating.
allislost @ Oct 22nd 2009 10:23PM
lol you're one those people huh?...
Poisoned Al @ Oct 22nd 2009 11:36PM
Yes, I'm one of "those" people that went "My scanner doesn't work, everything crashes and most games will run fine on DX9 ,so fuck this shit!"
nelson @ Oct 23rd 2009 7:31AM
I think you've been living under a rock then. Windows 7 has been getting amazing reviews for almost a year now. The release client version has been on my computer since April and I have never encountered an issue. Windows 7 is out, go buy it. It's worth it. Everything runs better and it is pretty much fully compatible with all hardware. Haven't found a single piece of hardware/software that hasn't worked correctly on the 1st install.
spyguy33 @ Oct 23rd 2009 7:42AM
@kojo87
The reason that most games never took advantage of DX10, was because Microsoft changed the SDK drastically from what DX9 and previous used. Most companies complained, so Microsoft changed the sdk back to what DX9 and earlier had. Now games can skip past DX10 with little modification.
