Ah ok. Just wondering then, why does Valve go through the trouble of jumping through hoops trying to appease the AOLFC, when there's such an easy workaround for their customers?

Roundabout and costly, but effective solution for non-steam players:

Valve should make shipping to Australia free.

There's a picture perfect example of a law that deserves to be broken by Australians every chance they get. That's a completely victimless crime...

I hope no one in Australia ever chainsaws someone and expect the bodies to be intact and magically disappear.

So I'm assuming films like Dawn/Shawn of the Dead and Saw etc are also banned in Australia?

We have an R18+ ratings for movies. Typically if movies are banned at all it's things like Ken Park, which from memory was effectively banned in the states as no theatre would show it.

i have exactly the same problem right now, my neighbor appeared with half face blasted, dripping blood with a huge hole on his chest mumbling something that sounded like brains, i decided to try and talk with him and understand his problems just like the Australia's Office of Film and Literature Classification suggested and now im writting this with a stupid corpse munching my head. Any suggestions?

From Australia - the country that brought us Rupert Murdock and Fox News. This is what happens when you elect a bunch of social conservatives into office.

"insufficient delineation between the depiction of general zombie figures and the human figures"

Yeah, they're not wrong. I shoot Bill all the time because the grizzled look shouts, "zombie" to me.

And that is why Australia sucks. Too many restrictions and unnecessary crap. Never going there at all. And bullcrap on the hot women excuse, Other countries have women too, you know, some even better than over there in crappy Australia.

censorship practices are so silly. Nevermind the lack of evidence supporting its intents or the restrictions it places on liberty -- the fact that this game exists as 0's and 1's demands of it to be pirated to the region anyway. Valve is trying to cash it on a customer base that will get it one way or the other, and if they don't get it from Valve directly, they will get it the other way. The Aussie board can't stop jack, except legitimate profits for a company that deserves every bit of it.

I really wish every story like this had a disclaimer at the bottom.

Point A) The Board is right. This game is not appropriate for 15 year olds. Did the ESRB give it a T rating?
Point B) The game would be allowed under an R18 rating. It's not a "ban."
Point C) We don't have an R18 rating because our outdated laws require all State Attorney Generals to agree to change the censorship laws, and one of them is being a dick.
Point D) Changing this particular law is not as easy as it sounds, and petitions and protests are pretty much pointless (remember that whole Iraq war thing?).

It's all a bunch of red tape and political bullshit, and it's all because of a man who we'll hopefully be rid of in a few years. So you can stop with the "nanny state" comments and "Australians are pussies."

That's not to say that this ISN'T a nanny state or that Australians AREN'T pussies, but not because of this issue. We got a lot of other shit going on too.

Or, as you said, a disclaimer.

Not to be rude, but did you read the first post thoroughly?

"The three-member board determined unanimously that the game "could not be accommodated within the MA 15+ classification," which is the highest rating allowed for video games in the region."

There is no R18 in Australia. MA 15+ is the highest.

Australia's Government needs to get over themselves. I mean, REALLY? This game is seriously not bad at all. I play Left 4 Dead in front of my baby sisters (one is five, the other is three) and they don't even care. They both understand it isn't real, therefore they know not to go on a bloody rampage and shoot people like that (which, since they aren't going to release this game, they think people will).

They also know, due to me explaining to them, that they are Zombies, and that unless if there is some weird ass government experiment in my state, like Dead Rising (which the mall that Dead Rising took place in is also coincidentally in my state), that they will cease to exist.

Why can't these morons know the same? I mean, if they can't understand the stuff that a three and five year old can, then there is absolutely no hope left for good ol' Australia.

Best thing for you to do, mates, is try Steam, or do what you want 'cause a pirate is free.

You mean UK pre-orders.

Japan and North America use NTSC and are therefore compatible. Australia and the EU use PAL and are therefore compatible. Neither a PAL or NTSC console will play a disc of the other format.

Which is kind of silly considering most (even the newer CRTs) TVs will play both formats.

Have any of you considered getting off your asses and launching an actual protest outside this doucebag's place of work/residence?

I'm not talking about sitting behind your keyboards whining on the net.

I'm talking about placards, loud-hailers and people yelling 'ra ra' or something similar. Make a fuss. Make it public. Get organized with what your points are.

Don't couch this that you want 'decapitation and blood' in your games. Point out that you oppose censorship in this manner. Point out that you believe people should be allowed to choose for themselves whether or not they view mature rated content. That it's not the government's right to make that decision for you.

Honestly if you guys can't get a decent enough sized crowd of people together to make a stand somewhere and get noticed then you deserve to play Hello Kitty Island for the rest of your gaming lives.

It's ok, I read an article somewhere were the Valve was questioned and it said that the UNEDITED version was accepted for release with an R18 rating in New Zealand, which makes me very happy after what happened with GTA4.
