Isn't this what we all feared would happen when the machines took over? Even the boss's hands are tied in the curious case of consumers legally purchasing copies of Borderlands for PC, only to be barred from playing until the game's official street date, October 26, which is six days later than the console release. On publisher 2K Games' forums, the conspiracy theory abounds -- it's a tactic to boost console sales! -- but the obvious conclusion is that the digital rights management (DRM) technology in place to "protect" the game's release date unnecessarily punishes consumers.
Big Download contacted Randy Pitchford, president of Borderlands development studio Gearbox Software, who said, "I don't know if something can be done to unlock copies for people that somehow get a copy before the street date ... I certainly can't do anything about it." Pitchford's sympathetic, of course -- which reminds him of, ugh, Valve's Half-Life 2 DRM -- but as a developer there's not much he can do once the game's been handed over to the publisher and surrounded by unflinching DRM.
"I know how that feels," Pitchford related. "I'm sorry it's happening to customers of Borderlands, and I wish there was something I could do about it."

I guess that's a good point... our dollars are encouraging them to continue the bullshit. But the absolute WORST thing you can do is buy the console version instead.
I suppose our safest course of action is to buy a bunch as many DRM-free games as we can, to show developers that we are willing to buy games that actually work right. Such games are hard to find though...

Isn't steam doing this too? You download first, unlock when it hit the digital "street", what's particularly bad about this one?

This really isn't a big deal. It sounds like a genuine accident, caused by stupid retailers who can't read a simple date.
Grow up, whiners.

Oh, I read the headline thinking he told them to unlock all copies early (would've made yesterday even more awesome), but couldn't get around TEH MASHEENS.

Keep in mind that you'll eventually get to play it. Yes, DRM sucks ass and there's no good reason the PC version was delayed (Steam preloaded the whole thing the day after the console version came out), but you take that risk when you buy something knowing the street date's being broken.
It is awful that the reason you can't play is due to DRM; which I'm sure will be cracked before Monday.

Tons of people bought it NOT knowing. God - you nerds live in your little internet box. Us "informed" consumers make up a very small portion of the world... despite how many people you have on your Facebook page.

I was not addressing people who unwittingly bought it early, just the "informed nerds" who come to this site and read the comments.
People who did buy it without knowing it wasn't officialy out have a right to be pissed, so please lay down your pitchfork and torch.

If you don't think there is anything wrong with this, you are an idiot.
The ads say it is available. Direct 2 Drive, Best Buy, Target, several other places have either shipped, email, or sold in person, the game.
Did some people go out and look for it trying to play the game before the ambiguous release date? Sure. There are also tons of people who didn't, don't know any better, etc.
And now? They have something they can't return and can't play.
Imagine buying a car, getting it home, and then finding out you can't actually start it until some date in the future.
The point is, consumers did nothing wrong. This is completely unacceptable.

I agree that consumers did nothing wrong if a store sold them the game early.
I think consumers are wrong to demand that there be a fix to let them play before the published PC release date.
Using your car analogy, you would have to include the angle that say Ford said "None of those 2010 Focus's should be sold before XXXX" and your local dealer sold you one anyway. If it did not start and Ford replied with, "sorry the electrical system will not turn on till XXXX, how did you get one?". I would think that is ok too.
I agree that they are not doing a good job in there advertisements of distinguishing the two and that's not cool. But the fact is the date is the date and the DRM is enforcing it. Arguing for an angle that gets around that just doesn't seem to be a good one in my opinion.

Its not Gearbox's issue. Its 2K's issue. Its simple as that. It affects Gearbox, but they can't fix it.

Well the conspiracy isn't about the DRM. It's about why the HELL does the PC version launch a week later, considering it has no additional content/features?
It seems like some kind of odd marketing ploy.

As far as the console date being broken and not enforcing the date like the PC version, do not think for a minute that they have not tried to get that pushed through and still some day might.
If console piracy ever gets close to PC piracy, you will see it.

That's hilarious, I've been playing the PC version for over a week now (I purchased the console version retail). DRM punishes legitimate customers yet again and does nothing to stop piracy! They wonder why people won’t purchase games on the PC…..

DRM isn't the issue here, so stop complaining about that. Retailers breaking street dates are the problem. They shouldn't be selling the game until it's release day, next Monday. Period.
A similar thing happened with Demigod when retailers (Gamestop) broke street dates on that and the servers weren't ready. Everyone was complaining that the servers were broken, when they should have been directing their complaints at the retailers who wrongfully sold them the game. I believe the developers had to come into their offices on Easter weekend to get the servers running, even though it clearly wasn't their fault.

I'll probably do with this what I do with most games of this nature: Buy it on console and pirate it on PC. Between system requirements, DRM, CD-keys, and installs, theres a lot of points of failure for me to be 100% comfortable with buying PC games nowadays, when consoles have the simplicity of "insert disk and being playing."
Actually already am lvl 11 on the console verison and I have to say its pretty kickass.

But now we don't have any incentive to try and trick the Best Buy video game people into selling us an early copy!
Whatever will we do!?

Well, a legit PC version has been floating around on torrents for a while now. While loyal customers who bought it already from a store that can't play it now have an option to actually play the f'ing thing.
Good job, Gearbox. Next time pick a better publisher. Hypocrites.

Dear all,
I'm a student of Management Engineering at Politecnico di Torino. One of the objectives of my master thesis, applied to a real case study, is the protection of confidential or valuable content using Digital Rights Management (DRM) techniques. I would like to start my research by doing a survey among expert and professionals in the IT sector.
As part of this work, I have developed a questionnaire whose purpose is collecting feedback in order to come up with an objective assessment of the market where such software for protecting digital assets could be deployed.
If you would be so kind to help me in doing my thesis, I will be happy to share with you the results of the survey by sending you the final report (which will be anonymous and respectful of your privacy). You can find the questionnaire online at the following link:
