Joystiq Podcast 114 - Funny last names edition

Chris is out with a flu of curiously porcine proportions and Justin is in a country with even worse internet connectivity than Ludwig's. Of course, that leaves only Ludwig ... lucky for you, he's bolstered the show with the contributions of Griffin McElroy and the omnipresent Tom Chick, video game freelancer extraordinaire. Mr Chick is perhaps best known for his cameo on Joystiq Podcast 113, where he (inadvertently) played the role of "Games Reviewer We Disagreed With Regarding Uncharted 2." Tune in for the thrilling confrontation!

I don't care what nobody sez: Demon's Souls is awesome.
Visceral is a cool studio name. Anyone who says otherwise can eat a gun.
American Choppers is a show for rednecks.
Dead Space Extraction: sadly, you did not sell.
Wait... no Justin? This isn't the real Joystiq cast!

DSG FTW!!!
cylet @ Oct 23rd 2009 8:59PM
great use of DSG
ProgHead @ Oct 23rd 2009 9:04PM
@pat_boy2008 and cylet
You bet your asses its a good use of the DSG girl. I understand her time is done here in joystiq. But it seems she still has some supporters inside the Joystiq crew. I believe in some months we might some some "overthrowing" in the chair of power around there and maybe, just maybe she'll be back to brighten our days.
I mean, who didn't felt a warm welcoming in the day when you would visit Joystiq and see her head floating about in almost every single post?
A lot of people I'm sure.
superklye @ Oct 24th 2009 9:44PM
I laughed way harder than I probably should've at this picture :D
Zexion_VI @ Oct 23rd 2009 8:28PM

Hey fellas, do you release the podcast the same time every single Friday? Since becoming a fan of the podcast recently I've gotten into the habit of checking the site a bunch from work on Fridays hoping the podcast will be up. Unfortunately, looks like it always might be once I'm done for the day :P
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 23rd 2009 9:36PM
it's been like this for the past three weeks or so, but they were usually anywhere between 12pm and 4pm

Photoshopped Orange County Choppers photo is win.

OH MY BELOVED!
Your face is scared as always, but oh my! You gained some weight!
chulipin @ Oct 23rd 2009 10:02PM
I propose that DSG should be used in Halloween, just like she did in that historical day for Joystiq.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 23rd 2009 10:36PM
Just wanted to point out that Cortana is voiced by Jen Taylor, not Jennifer Hale. Taylor has a way way lower level of Nolan North style proliferation that Jennifer Hale has, the only characters other than Cortana she's voiced was Keria Stokes from FEAR 2 and Zoey in Left 4 Dead. Jen Hale is pretty much lady Nolan North, she's god damn everyone from Bastilla to Ophelia to lady commander Shepard, I agree though that emily rose is incredible though. Hale has more range and able to change or disguise her voice more than Nolan North does/cares to do, but Emily is just way above
Dr. Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 24th 2009 12:49AM
Hale is in everything. She's Samus, Jennifer Mui, the list is endless.
Skaz @ Oct 23rd 2009 10:52PM
There was actually a great cinematic moment in Uncharted 2 where you come across an armored car with an anti-air gun on it strapped to one of the rail cars while you're being chased by the chopper.
Didn't really subvert the trope but it was a great Die-Hard style moment.
shimshim84 @ Oct 23rd 2009 11:08PM
omFg worst show ever....soooooo boreing i miss justin and the chubby leader of the cast
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 23rd 2009 11:58PM
do you know who is who?
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 23rd 2009 11:59PM
Aw man, I'm crushed that my VISCERAL wasn't used : (
I worked so hard on making the Bible bigger, better, and more badass.
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 24th 2009 12:58AM
Send it to Epic, they'll hire ya.
Kadamon @ Oct 24th 2009 12:01AM
Scrolling through the Joystiq, flickering past articles.
Pause.
"Wait a minute..."
Scroll back up and stare for a moment. Something seems off. Obviously a shop because of the fact that it's a podcast post.
Stare a moment more.
Look at all faces and try to hold in a snort, failing.
Guffaws and lack of breathing moments later.
+1 Mr. Grant. That was well played, well played indeed.
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 24th 2009 12:57AM
You are a bunch of assholes. Next time, edit out the spoilers and post it AFTER the goddamn podcast, or insert a real timestamp as to when you'll finish. Fuckers.
Jorrel56 @ Oct 24th 2009 2:11AM
Tom Chick was an awful addition. Never has it been painful to listen to a video game podcast for me. Way too many times he took a topic and dragged it on 5+ minutes past where the topic should be taken. And some of the points/topics he brought up were awful.
Real shame because I really think Ludwig did a good job hosting. But I would have tried and shut this guy up every now and then and move onto more important topics.
You won't be missing anything if you skip this weeks podcast.
Jorrel56 @ Oct 24th 2009 10:28AM
Wait! I missed my opportunity for a good line. OK. Let's try that again.
*clears throat*
Real sophomore effort by Tom Chick in this week's podcast!
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 24th 2009 11:02AM
that was a terrible line. And Chris Grant drags things just as much and we love him for it. Ass.
Jorrel56 @ Oct 24th 2009 12:26PM
Chris does a good job at keeping things moving.
I can't think of any previous Joystiq podcast where one person dragged on a topic so long, so consistently.
Why you sticking up for this guy anyhow? Thankfully that is the last we'll hear from him.
SwordVsDagger @ Oct 24th 2009 2:37AM
to the chick guy
drake and chole were seeing each other in 2002
he has a flower for each "love"
then in 2006 is elena , which is in uncharted
uncharted 2 is set at least in December 2009. his passport is stamped 18 DEC 2009
its in drakes dairy (select)
Jose [Steam & PSN: Assmar] @ Oct 24th 2009 2:48AM
Huge discounts sounds like part of a marketing budget if you ask me. And if that helps push units out of the door, I don't believe it should be considered in NPD or even how we personally gauge sales success/failure.
And you Nancies are completely wrong about Uncharted the First: three shots to the torso, one to the head, and any human goes down for good.
Saria the Cat (now on XBL!) @ Oct 24th 2009 6:56AM
Wait, a Ludwig-heavy podcast? I can tolerate that. :)
Griffin also fills me with the giggles.
Tom Chick @ Oct 24th 2009 12:35PM
"Real sophomore effort by Tom Chick in this week's podcast!"
Jorrel, you should have saved that one. It would have been quite the zinger if it was my second time on the podcast!
Thanks to Ludwig for letting me join in. I had a great time.
colt4by5 @ Oct 26th 2009 3:55PM
The fact that you actively reply to comments is cool... if it's really you!
Halwende @ Oct 29th 2009 7:28PM
Personally I thought Tom Chick was a superb commentator, I'd love to see him return for future guest spots. I found his discussions mature and he brought up many great points - bravo
Ironhammer @ Oct 24th 2009 2:30PM
Wow, Tom really brought some great insight and discussion on video games to a podcast that has slowly degraded into a bunch of sideshow nonsense over the past year. Thank you Tom, your comments were much appreciated by this listener!
BW Diederich @ Oct 24th 2009 4:17PM
To be even MORE pedantic, a freudian slip does not have to be sexual or related to some sort of primal oedipal urge. A freudian slip is a slip that reveals any subconscious or unconscious idea/desire/etc. So Tom Chick was wrong, and it totally was a freudian slip and my Griffin love remains true and pure.
colt4by5 @ Oct 26th 2009 4:27PM
Well, he follows it up with "I constantly forget that little thing"... in reference to his Wii, so I think we've got all the bases covered.
Mr French @ Oct 24th 2009 11:49PM
Tom Chick, the Douche Pretentious Dick.
As words came out I watched the clock tick.
He spoke with spoilers galore,
And through it all was truly a bore.
To hope he never returns, is all I can do,
or next time I may have to throw him a shoe.
Mr French @ Oct 25th 2009 1:24AM
I guess I should have mentioned in my letter though that I already have a Blu Ray player and I do have a 40K a year job, so I'm not exactly money poor, but I am time poor. If that makes any sense.
Cam @ Oct 25th 2009 10:21PM
wait...wasn't uncharted 2 last week? I'm pretty sure this is why Ludwig wasn't allowed to run the show.
Sammy @ Oct 25th 2009 10:48PM
Ok, when you've got a "spoiler alert" skip the next 10 minutes, you better fucking be done by 10 fucking minutes, ok?
That's all. Now, I'm going to play some spoiled Uncharted 2, which is still better than unspoiled, ummmmm, anything.
texman @ Oct 28th 2009 8:55AM
Agreed. I didn't particularly enjoy having to turn off my podcast in the middle of my hour long commute. (ipod sits in glove box). I mean the normal guys go out of their way to not discuss spoilers on games over a year old (usually) but now we have to start dodging spoilers on a 2 week old game?? Booooooo.
Love the usual guys, was not a fan of the guest host.
ScottG13 @ Oct 27th 2009 2:06PM
Tom Chick is possibly the best video game podcaster on the net. Fantastic. Great voice, smart insight.
MindTheGap76 @ Oct 28th 2009 2:11AM
I don't comment often, but wanted to chime in that I really enjoyed Tom Chick's contribution to the show. I wasn't familiar with him before, but I was really impressed.
It brought a different, more thoughtful style to a podcast that I tend to like more for its zaniness, so I can appreciate how some regular listeners might have been put off. But I thought it was a great change of pace, and I'd be happy to have him back on as a guest any time.
gunslinger @ Nov 9th 2009 9:53PM
I have to agree with MindTheGap76, the interaction between Tom and Ludwig was absolutely epic.
Don't get me wrong, I like the 1st stringers, but Ludwig+Griffin+Tom = (Awesomely Brilliant)^2
Griffin should get over whatever is keeping him from being a regular participant in the podcast and become more frequent on the show.
Thanks for a wonderful discussion on Uncharted 2.
doogie4135 @ Oct 28th 2009 2:55PM
I miss the "Live from a mysterious oil tanker" opening.
Tom Chick @ Oct 28th 2009 8:02PM
Holy cats, you're absolutely right, Diederich, about Freudian slips. I'd been thinking all along of Oedipal slips! If there even is any such thing. Thanks for the correction.
Also, I think ScottG13 must be an account my mom registered. Hi, mom!
And for those of you who might have had Uncharted 2 spoilerized, my sincere apologies. I hate spoilers. Just hate them. I'm sorry we didn't time it for you more carefully. Ludwig tried to put the kibosh on it, but I kept just having to get one more thing in. Sorry. :(
Chedder @ Nov 5th 2009 4:08PM
Tom Chick is such a pretentious bastard. Seriously...he's annoying. Does he enjoy anything?
