New Final Fantasy XIII screenshots reintroduce Oerba

We're still dumbfounded by the fact that -- after years of endless CG teases and countdowns -- Final Fantasy XIII is actually coming out. While still pegged with a vague "Spring 2010" release, Square Enix has made good on its promise of a hastened localization. Already, the HUD sports English text, and the characters have been dubbed in English.

The latest batch of screenshots released by Square Enix focus on Oerba Yun Fang, a character introduced at Tokyo Game Show as a traitor working for the government. She may start out as a villain, but it seems one way or another, she's bound to join your party: these screens show her (and her summon) in actual gameplay screens, proving there will be some interactivity between the hours of cutscenes FF13 is bound to have.

If you look at the battle screen it's called Gestalt.

So no, that's no bahumat.

Gestalt is a mode where the summon turns into a vehicle... Not the name of a summon

So, are her and Vanille related or something? Is Oerba their last name/tribe name/village name? Do we call her Yun Fang or just Fang? I'm so confused!

Either way, Bahamut looks bitchin' in that summon picture.

I think they've rounded out the cast of characters

1) Lightning
2) Snow
3) Vanielle
4) Sazh
5) Hope
6) Fang

Six makes it a Final Fantasy party! (unless they go with 7 like FFX)

I'm still trying to decide PS3 vs. 360.... decisions, decisions.

It was optimized for PS3, would make sense to go that route.

I would definitely say the PS3 version for the same reason. Also the fact that I don't feel like changing disks, as awesome of a game as Lost Odyssey was, four disks was just crazy! Although, it did remind me of the good old PSOne generation. :/

In this case I agree with mywhitenoise.

I'd normally go 360, but I think I'd prefer fewer discs and I'm sure the achievements are gonna be a pain to 100%. (trophies aren't such a big deal for me personally)

What? Since when a Final Fantasy party has to come with only 6 playable characters? FFIX had:

That's a 8. FFVII had:

That's a 9. FFVI had:

That's 14. FFV had 5, FFIV had 12 and in after years you play as 22.

The only game that had 6 characters was FFVIII, that's about it :/ Well that and FFI but you still choose only 4 characters out of six xD. FFXII has more than six in revenant wings.

gotta wonder how much hp does the enemies sport given they are doing damage of over 1k

A spoiler alert would have been nice for that "traitor" tidbit. :-P

is it just me or did this game look a lot cooler back in 2006?

Is anybody who never played much of the series before remotely interested in this game? I realize it has a massive fan base, but I wonder if it will ever attract many newcomers.

Yeah, the definition of nerdy is imitating playing sports because you're too bad/have no friends to play in real life.

Why would anybody in their right mind pay $200-$600 to solely play sports titles, I purchased NBA Street Homecourt and NCAA 08 and had a blast with them but why would you pay that much money to only play sports games when you can just go outside and play sports for free. If you paid money to buy a video game console why not use it to play experiences exclusive to the video game media.

This game is looking awesome. I can't wait to get my hands on it. For some reason I get the feeling that Fang will be just a computer controlled story character though.

yeah it's bahamut but he turns in to actuall dragon jet form to cast mega flare it's pretty awesome! cant wait for this game this dec!!!

I hope thats not all the playable characters...downvote me if you want, but I'm not digging this cast too much. I was kinda wanting a manly man like Auron, or an animal type character like Red XIII. Guess Snow and his chinhair will have to take both places. Oerba & Lightning seem decent, so I guess those three will be my main group, with Chocobro here and there cause hes cool. Vanille seems so bland, & Hope is a ladyboy, so count them out of my crew.God I cant wait for Versus XIII.

Those environments look really cool. I hope those camera issues are worked out so I can look at them better.

So, have they left out the earth-summon (ie Titan or Brothers) altogether?

It's unbelievable how far things have come, the environments in this game look better than the pre-rendered ones in FFVIII. I'm so excited I think I'm going to need new pants.

A villain becoming an ally later on in the game? Man that one hasn't been done before. ;p

Gestalt will be what summons are called in this version. Same as in 10 they were Aions and 12 they were Espers I'm going to bet that's Bahamut.

I think its pretty cool that Oerba is wearing a sari, although its kinda modified. But still cool nonetheless!
