Rumor: Eight minutes of footage of the Xbox's Sky Player

The demo shows the channel selection displayed not only in the familiar NXE interface, but also in a "guide" format like those used by cable and satellite boxes. Another NXE-type menu allows for choosing TV shows and movies by category. And yes, you are treated to an ad for Batman: The Brave and the Bold, along with other footage of the actual watching TV part in action.

I know UK players get the shaft a lot of the time, but if this works well, the US will have reason to bitch for a change.
EGOvoruhk @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:25PM
Since when have we needed a reason!?
Marmot @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:40PM
Since you threw the tea out fuckers.
Xizer @ Oct 24th 2009 3:14PM
Why would we need to bitch about you guys getting Rupert Murdoch owned trash? Keep your UK Fox News.
Besides, if I ever want to watch something that airs on Sky, it is trivial to pirate it.
yolarrydabomb @ Oct 24th 2009 5:16PM
We been having something to bitch at ever since cost of wi-fi and hard drives and overprice avatars
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:38PM
Just got my skyplus HD :D I'm a very happy and satisfied customer :)
So this on Xbox is a great thing, however, unless I happen to leave the wonderful confines of my home with my xbox in hand, it won't be used very often, now I just need a 60 inch HD plasma and we are in business.
Ultimate Cinema experience, here I come!
Mike @ Oct 24th 2009 8:11AM
Well al lot of people cant get cable or sky (through a dish)
So up to now i have subscribed to sky player and connected my laptop to my tv, so for me it will be great no more need to connect the laptop up to watch live sport on the tv..
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 24th 2009 8:21AM
I suppose in that case it comes in handy, its annoying that Sky doesnt support many regions even within the UK still, the same applies to their internet services. Central London has the best service, anywhere outside of it and other cities tends to be half arsed at times :(
xxLUANCHYxx @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:40PM
Damn. >:(
marcusthegreat @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:53PM

Uncle Rodeo @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:49PM
@ marcusthegreat

PsEG @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:07PM
@marcusthegreat
That song you're wondering about's 'Club Foot' by Kasabian.
PsEG @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:08PM
...and leave it to me to forget to refresh and see someone else answered that question. My bad.
aaron @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:47PM
That looks awesome.... hopefully we see MS partner with one of the content providers here in the states to bring us that stuff.
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:49PM
Please bring this to the States.
Aizei @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:50PM
Unless you guys give us netflix I don't want to share
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 24th 2009 12:50PM
I will share with you Netfilx. I WANT MA NEWZ (with a strong British accent).
NeoHumpty @ Oct 24th 2009 2:56PM
The news is that Netflix is going international. I would assume that would include you. Supposed to be a big announcement coming very soon.
Fossii @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:50PM
We have one at work, just waiting for a manager to schedule some briefing time to go mess about with it, not gonna be much point soon considering it's out on the 27th...
Larry @ Oct 23rd 2009 3:56PM
I would not be surprised that if Hulu ever came to the Xbox it would look like this.
guelth @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:06PM
I like what I see. Come to U.S.
Billy @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:08PM
This is going to be great.
CloudStrife @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:25PM
Looks good, gonna have to get it, watching the football in a party should be great.
On another note, why show Leeds? I hate them so much, playing them tomorrow actually.
nick @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:35PM
It's interesting... Microsoft had partnered with Comcast a long time ago and had made a huge investment in the company. The two had planned to collaborate on technologies. Microsoft was going to provide software and a guide for a set top box, that was never widely distributed outside of a pilot in Seatle. Oddly, the Comcast partnership never really seemed to go anywhere. And Microsoft sold off shares in Comcast earlier this year.
Microsoft, at one time was highly interested in IPTV, but it seems as if the effort has stalled somewhat. I'm sure eyes will be on Sky to see how that pans out.
DrObvious @ Oct 23rd 2009 6:17PM
@nick
It might appear that way but their middleware (Mediaroom) powers a number of IPTV deployments. Two of the more most notable are AT&T (U-Verse!), and BT. Check it out.

nick @ Oct 23rd 2009 10:39PM
Yeah, and this was basically the technology Microsoft was supplying to Comcast, that Comcast never pursued beyond the trial phase in one location. Point is, Comcast is the largest cable company in the US, and from appearances they don't seem to be working with Microsoft. It was thought that Comcast was pursuing their own direction because of a deal with TIVO-- which funny thing, hasn't panned out. Hmm.

Speaking of Batman: BATB, tonight is the Music Meister episode! Neil Patrick Harris makes such a great villain.
shane86 @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:48PM
This costs a hell of a lot more than netflix does in the U.S.
first of all, if you're already a sky subscriber, you need to pay €70 a month to get all the channels, and to watch tv using sky player you need to pay an extra €15 a month on top of that.
Kizzle @ Oct 23rd 2009 4:55PM
True, but it looks like you get what you pay for. Netflix is nice but I'd trade it for this. Netflix is extremely limited compared to this.
Ethan @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:03PM
I think it might be available on a per-programme basis if you're not subscribed. At least that's the model for their current on demand services. Pf course, the prices are ridiculous.
Ethan @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:07PM
Oh hang, on, let me correct myself. You do have to pay some sort of subcription, but it might be less than the variety pack on the sky box.
Comrade @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:34PM
Wow looks pretty good. But with the extra subscription fee it look like we are all gonna be putting through some member of the Murdoch family through college.
Maverick Saturn (Igor) @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:49PM
Chances of this coming over to the US are slim, Sky hasn't even globalised thier services as a company, doubt they will start doing so just for Xbox :(
Raffi @ Oct 23rd 2009 7:45PM
I think Fox and Sky are the same company, News corp or whatever.
Arturo @ Oct 23rd 2009 5:55PM
I wish this would come to the US :(
Darkwun @ Oct 23rd 2009 6:33PM
i am actually looking forward to the 27th now, from what i noticed in the clip if you already have a sky subscription with the sky player service you should be able to add the box on for no extra cost which me will be useful......
Billy @ Oct 23rd 2009 7:59PM
I think for live channels you need a multi-room subscription. On demand, as far as I know is fine with whatever Sky subscription you have on it's own.
Spartan [Planeteer | Power of Sunshine & Lollipops] @ Oct 23rd 2009 8:51PM
This would be nice for my household;
1 skybox and two 360's, all in different rooms.
There would be alot less competition for the remote.
Does anyone know if you can record to your HDD?
Also, can you watch the channels in HD if your 360 is
connected to a compatible tv?
Darkwun @ Oct 24th 2009 7:05AM
as far as i've read before the answers to both of your questions are no, it's purely just live streaming or VOD
finnith @ Oct 24th 2009 2:20AM
Canada still gets jipped.
P.S. Too many of my posts are like this...
darkdeath174 @ Oct 26th 2009 6:05PM
how about canada gets something.... since they dont even get that many movies nor do we even get tv shows
todd @ Oct 28th 2009 1:19PM
Where is this for my Uverse, bastards... they announced it, what, 3-4 years ago? I don't want to pay $7/mo for a cable box when I could just get me a $200 xbox 360 to put in my bedroom, heck I might even play games on it.
