Upcoming new device integration sends Netflix stock soaring

Netflix stated that its Xbox 360 service helped the company add 2.4 million subscribers since September of 2008. This new deal, according to the company, is predicted to bring in 900,000 to 1.2 million more customers in just the fourth quarter -- it also announced it will begin offering the service overseas next year.
Before getting too excited, Netflix could be offering its service through a cable provider like Comcast or DirecTV -- perhaps the iPhone? We've contacted Netflix for further information and asked when it plans to make its big announcement.

I sure as hell hope so. If it does happen, it'll kill the Video store though. Decent selection, but good god is it all over priced.

That would definitely be HUGE for netflix and the whole dvd rental biz too... I just wonder if microsoft has netflix on lockdown somehow?
and although iphone is a cool idea, does iphone really have the bandwidth to do that?

I would expect the PS3-Sony's been pushing it as a media hub for ages-but I'm not so sure about the iPhone. It'd have to be Wi-Fi only, as AT&T's network can barely handle the data load it has now.

I really hope it's the PS3. My Xbox-owning brothers have been watching Netflix on their 360s on a near-daily basis and kind of getting me jealous. lol

Yeah. Netflix was one of the selling points for me to get a TiVo, and my TiVo just crashes when I try to stream. Sucks. Works fine on my PC, but I don't want to watch TV on it.

It should be the PS3. I imagine Microsoft signed a short-term exclusivity clause to get it before Sony did, and it's about time for that clause to expire. I remember over a year ago Netflix had a poll for the PS3 and the results were very positive. However, Microsoft did their typical money bucket thing (or Sony didn't like the licensing terms or whatever) and got it first.
Regardless, it could still be Sony holding this back because it competes directly with the lucrative (read: overpriced) offerings on the PSN.

If this is for iPhone, that would be weird. Really Weird. But I guess its most likely not that hard for them to pull off if it was wi-fi only. Of course, I still don't get the desire of watching a video on a really small screen, so what do I know?

I'm hoping for the PS3 as well. I have both a 360 and a PS3, but I'm not a gold subscriber so the Netflix inclusion is, sadly, worthless for me. It's certainly not a must have, but it'd be quite convenient.

I would think its a combination. There is some hd content on Netflix Streaming, but not everything is, of course. The Wii can only output at the most 480p, so I would think it would have to scale to that.
Also, I totally recommend PlayOn for Netflix streaming. Its not as seamless as on xbox, but it does the job on both ps3 and (I think) wii.

I'm just wondering how Sony would deal with their own Video service on the PS3 alongside a Netflix offering.
Would it interfere too much with them, or would it be easy enough to negotiate with Netflix and Sony's ownership of numerous titles?
Even though I would like it on PS3 as a sales booster, I don't think it will be happening. We'll see I guess.

i'd doubt it'd just be the wii. i mean, when you look at the exclusivity w/ the 360, it was just that. MS paid them money to have it time exclusive for some. Netflix has openly said they would looove to have it on all consoles, and that would come sooner or later. But to put it on just wii and not on ps3, especially knowing the TYPE of people that use ps3s (active users, people that use it more than once a month etc)

my guess is it's the Wii and if it is PS3 i doubt Canadians will get a part of this as well. I don't need a video store myself cause i rather own a hard copy o things or rent movies myself from a local store, besides their is a Canadian Website like Netflix called ZIP so this is another reason i doubt Netflix would have anything to do with Canadians !

Is it just me, or was the fact that they're bringing it to other countries totally blown over by both Joystiq and Yahoo in the linked article? That seems like much bigger news, and has the potential to affect their subscriber numbers by a helluva lot more than 900k - 1.2m.

I don't agree with pirating movies... But no matter what I -will- pirate pretty much any tv show that I want to watch at the 'same' time as Americans (like 24 hours after it first airs). It's so unfair that you have so many good shows while we don't :(

Oh, no. Of course not. I meant for the independent films that were made to be free. And, yeah, I dl shows all the time. I have a DVR for my cable, but I like to line them up neatly by season on the ps3. Especially Dr. Who. I hate having to wait for the few new ones to come stateside.

I'm not even going to try and say I haven't pirated before, but an existing subscription + ability to use on my ps3 would be a lot more convenient. Though their selection still isn't huge, there's definitely enough movies and shows to be able to find something to toss on if you're bored.

While The PS3 would make sensible fit, don't forget that last year Nintendo announced there would be VOD in Japan on the Wii.

The DS has a HUGE userbase.
It is the obvious choice for HD streaming, and could use its 4mb of RAM as a buffer!

Won't be the PS3. Microsoft has a person on the Netflix board! so no PS3. They have already said that it will be the only console. So believe that. This is going to be a iPhone app or another DVD upgrade or something.

That could also mean that Netflix would just have some kind of charge on the PS3. Either way, if people want Netflix on their PS3, just pick up PlayOn.

Sorry to burst your bubble guys...
Netflix will be available through a gadget that you can hookup to most Sony TV's the gadget is called Bravia internet video module.
The gadget will allow you to view your netflix subscription with the touch of your Bravia remote.
I know this because..
1) This is old news. It was announced earlier this year.
2) I have a Bravia so I stay on top the latest news.

That's something different. That deal has already gone through and will be implemented soon. This new Netflix thing is an upcoming deal.
Not to mention, Netflix management won't provide specifics about the new deal. Why would they hold back info that it's the Bravia deal when they already made that public a while ago?

For sure IT IS NOT for the PS3 or iPhone. Neither Sony nor Apple are going to bring in a direct competitor to a service they already offer themselves.
