Netflix: PS3 disc must remain in system until 2010 update; and other answers to your pressing questions
209
Netflix was kind enough to answer a heap of nitpicky questions following the announcement that its steaming service would soon be available for PlayStation 3. Certainly, question marks hovered over the application "disc" and whether or not it would have to always be in the PS3 to use the Netflix streaming service. It turns out that Netflix won't have an integrated XMB solution just yet -- but it's coming.
Check out our interview with a Netflix representative for the full details:
Joystiq: Was the PS3 application developed internally by Netflix?
Netflix: Yes, with the help of the Sony team.
Can the Netflix application be installed to the PS3 hard dive from the disc? Or must the disc be inserted every time a user wants to access Netflix?
Yes, the Netflix disc has to be inserted every time to access the Netflix service.
Why a disc-based application and not streaming access through the PS3 browser?
Netflix members and PS3 owners have really wanted a way to instantly watch movies and TV episodes streamed from Netflix via the PS3 system. The instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let them do this.
Why not distribute the application via PSN download or firmware update, and then embed it into the XMB?
Again, the instant streaming disc represented the fastest and easiest way to let PS3 enthusiasts get Netflix on the PS3. Late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.
Is releasing the PS3 application on a disc required by an exclusivity agreement with Microsoft?
The Netflix agreement with Sony for PS3 is consistent with the terms of our partnership with Microsoft for Xbox 360. Our goal is to give members the opportunity to instantly watch movies streamed from Netflix via the widest variety of Netflix ready devices. All of our partners are aware of our goal.
Is any new content being added to the Netlfix streaming catalog alongside this announcement?
We are constantly adding content to better serve our members, however we did not announce new content alongside the PS3 announcement.
Can users search the entire Netflix streaming library from the PS3? (On Xbox 360, browsing is currently limited to 100-movie categories.)
Similar to Xbox, subscribers can search lists of movies in categories such as New Releases, Drama, Action, Comedy, etc., and will have access to the entire library available to watch instantly.
Will special features typically found on DVD and Blu-ray discs (e.g., additional audio tracks, director commentary, etc.) be available through the PS3 application?
No.
Is there any difference between the content catalog available on PS3 versus Xbox 360?
No.
Does the PS3 application include any features that aren't in the Xbox 360 application?
No.
Are there more features being planned for a future update?
Again, late next year we expect to have an embedded solution available for PS3s via a system software update slated for release through the PlayStation Network.
Finally, what's the update on a Netflix application for Wii?
Certainly, the Wii represents a great opportunity given the size of its installed base, but we have nothing specific to say about it at this point. The Xbox partnership has been terrific for Netflix members, and we're equally excited to announce the partnership with PS3.

That's incredibly annoying. Guess it's the trade off for free compared to the Xbox 360.

It's not a programming issue. Everyone knows the disc is how they get around their exclusivity with MS. The PS3 is not offering a streaming Netflix experience on a console. Instead, it's offering a BD-Live functionality access to their service. It's a technical, but required distinction.
I'm assuming that their talk about embedding it into the XMB late next year is around the time the exclusivity with MS ends.

It makes it feel like a cheap workaround, as if it was unofficial.
I just got my PS3, so I'll probably switch to watching Netflix on that, if only because its so much quieter.

They will have the actual application available by late 2010, so it's not like you have to use it forever. Although, it is kind of silly, it would be easier to digitally distribute the program than mailing out thousands and more of those disks. Then again, day in the life of Netflix, I'd wager.

Looks like rumors of one year exclusives for 360 is true. One year after netflix comes to 360, it's now on the ps3.
I bet you need the disc so they can region lock it. That's from the content owners. I bet they are working on a scheme to region lock the ps3 and that's the reason why it's coming built in next year as opposed to now. They did the same thing with the 360.
Plus holy cow... How many devices is netflix going to be on. I think the only things netflix isn't on is the Wii and cell phones.

It kind of sounds like the disc is a solution to get around a firmware update, which won't happen until next year. So instead of changing firmware, they're launching a player and/or some sort of DRM from disc.
Also, isn't Netflix streaming based on Microsoft Media Player and Silverlight technology? The latter allowed for portable DRM between platforms.
Kinda sucks about the disc requirement, but at least it sounds as if it won't be permanent.

Here's hoping there's disc-based workaround for things like GTA4 DLC content on the ps3.
Not in a huge rush for it, since I haven't finished the main campaign yet. But it would be greatly appreciated.

It's as "incredibly annoying" as putting in a disc every time you want to watch a movie sent to you from Netflix.

Netflix has an exclusive contract with Microsoft for the Electronic Distribution of video. A loophole however allows the distribution via DVD. The Netflix / Microsoft agreement expires in 2010 which is when an app will be added to the PS3 menu. No plans are in place for the Wii due to the lack of it not having a hard drive.

Will the Wii be able to stream HD films when it its self is not a HD console?
Posted: Oct 26th 2009 6:11PM CaramelZappa said
Obviously not. It will stream the films, but the resolution will never higher than 480p, because the wii in incapable of outputting signal at higher resolutions.

It probably has the capability to, but that might mean that Nintendo does a major firmware update

It could still benefit from a higher bitrate, even though the resolution is scaled down.

I don't know really well how it works, but I have 3rd party HD cables with wii, 360, and PS3 plugs and I use it for my Wii. It has no yellow cable, only the red, green, blue for video and the red and blue for audio. Seems like it's outputting in HD to me. The TV says it's receiving input on component so...

It's getting a 480p signal. It's still considered an 'HD' signal from a technical standpoint.

Actually, Darth, I made the same mistake that you just made once and got my ass reamed for it. 480p is technically "enhanced definition", not "high definition".

Come to think of it, the Jedi Mind Trick was surprisingly worthless. Everybody was like, "I'm an alien, JMT don't work on me." or "I'm strong-willed, JMT ain't no thing." or "Well, I have a nine inch wang, so....yeah.".
Maybe they should have called it the Jedi Mind Illusion...

You've been watching too many George Lucas films...the Sith embrace freedom!
After all, the Jedi are expected to live without pay, not own anything, and wear the same clothes every day. *shudders*
The Sith provide ships, cool uniforms, money, women.
Which sounds more like slavery to you?

doesnt sound like a big deal to me,get up and put a disk in the system. remote controls werent on tvs many years ago so we had to get up to change the channel in the early 80's lol america needs a little exercise and its a trade off for not having to pay a monthly fee. or having to pay $100 for a wireless adapter, or $130 for a hard drive.

@Chris How do you know it's doing it better? You've used it? Oh no? Guess you're just talking out of your ass. I'll start using the ps3 over my xbox for netflix as long as it's even similar. I don't mind the disc swapping. The noise and constant threat of a RROD though, I don't like at all.
