Man, when is Europe going to get over this whole soccer thing? Not only do they love the real-life sport to an unhealthy degree, often leading to gang formation and general acts of hooliganism, but they also possess a collective, soul-crushing addiction for the game's many virtual representations. For instance, Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 debuted in the top sales spot for UK last week, bumping former first-place finisher FIFA 10 down to third place.
Nestled betwixt these two was Forza Motorsports 3, which admittedly has little to do with soccer. Fourth and fifth place went to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 respectively, which have even less to do with soccer -- though the appearance of a wrestling game in the top five gives us hope for the nation. Now there's a sport.

Duh, who didn't see this coming? The only two games that can push the UK gaming industry far out of recession are Fifa and PES, occasionally other games like NFS and Wii games.

If Fifa and Forza also used inflatable sex dolls to promote their games, they might stand a better chance of beating PES.

@Rich, yeah I know what you mean. Every time a yank talks about American Football, it's the biggest sport in the world, which to be honest is total bullshit. Football/Soccer is bigger because it's not just the football celebs that play it, it's played in the streets, in schools, in parking lots, fuck me it's played anywhere you have space to kick a ball. Does American football have that same type of following...? I highly doubt it....
@Space, I can get what you are saying, however that's the thing, would all these American Football guys actually be any use without their drugs amd steroids...? I highly doubt it, that it why I have a lot more respect for the likes of Rugby players, because their athletisism is pure hard work, not some chemical enhancement forced on a player by their Neo-Nazi coach. Maybe I am looking upon football coaches from an American television stand-point but I doubt in reality it is any different

Ramin123, Why isn't SOCCER so massively followed in Australia then?
Seriously, myself and nearly every single person I know played soccer when we were kids from about age 4-5 to around 9-10. Why? I believe it's because our mothers were duped into believing SOCCER would keep their little darlings safe. Insurance council of Australia sports injury claims shows the reality is vastly different.
Of course once we hit around 9-10 the kids want to play what they want or nothing at all. Many kids drop out of sport because their parents won't let them play a "dangerous" sport like Rugby, but many of the kids no longer want to be forced to play soccer.
Why after 3 years is the A-League, Australia's much vaunted national SOCCER competition, suffering with falling crowd numbers, and 5 clubs (out of 10) in severe financial difficulty? The most disturbing aspect of this is that SOCCER in Australia is played in summer when AFL, League and Union are having a break. Only Cricket, a national obsession, is played in Summer and it isn't direct competition. THERE IS ALMOST NO COMPETITION FROM ANY OTHER FOOTBALL CODE FOR SOCCER IN AUSTRALIA AND IT IS STILL GOING BUST?
Soccer can't compete with it's own boredom here in Australia, just as I suspect in the US and Canada as well. We're too spoiled for choice with professional sports played at the highest levels, and can pick and choose what sports we want to watch and, despite the almost perfect circumstances for promotion and no direct competition, SOCCER just doesn't cut the mustard so to speak.
PES is a very average game about a very average game.

Good for PES.
Considering the terribly buggy mess that FIFA is this year, I truly hope that EA are punished in sales. Though, unsurprisingly, it sold like butter the first few weeks; now that PES is out, I really hope that they outsell FIFA. It's not likely, I know, but one can hope..
I have preferred the FIFA series for the past two years, but unless they fix the game (No, patch 1.02 did not fix it. It barely fixed anything), then I'm happily going to support PES instead.

@Ramin - Uhh you can play Football (US) anywhere too. All you need is a football and room. You can play football in the streets (touch/tag or flag), front/back yards, parking lots, etc. And just like in Europe/Asia/Mexico, you will see kids playing American Football absolutely everywhere. Just like the kids do in Europe (I go to Italy once a year to see family & friends) and play Soccer in the streets, American kids will play football in the streets or soccer fields here.
I'm American (born here, but both parents are Italian) and I know absolutely, positively that American Football doesn't stand remotely close to the popularity of Futbol around the world. US Football doesn't hold a candle to Soccer/Futbol. So I don't know what "yanks" you're talking about, but I'm pretty sure that most American sports fans (who know what they are talking about) know that Soccer is huge the rest of the world over.
And we couldn't care less if Football (US) isn't as popular as Soccer/Futbol. We just love our Football, that's for sure. Believe it or not, Football (US) at a competitive level is a very complicated sport to play & understand. Much, much much much more so than Soccer. It takes brawn, speed, and brains to play Football (US) competitively. So although most Football (US) players are big brutes, they also have an understanding for a very complicated sport that you have to understand to even be able to compete. A sport you've probably never taken the time to comprehend or have just blown it off as dumb, 'roid taking brutes.
I like Baseball too. But I only love playing it, not so much watching it. If it's not the world series or division series' than it's boring as shit to watch. I might be in the minority here, but yes, Americans love their baseball too but maybe not AS MUCH as you think.

Ok I take that last part back. Most Americans go bonkers for Baseball.
I think it's just me that gets bored with it. :)

RELAX dherasa.
Don't be so precious about SOCCER.
It just may be that it isn't for everyone. I know that's hard for you to comprehend, but some of us would rather hammer 9 inch red hot nails through our balls before being subjected to death by boredom in 90min that is a SOCCER game.
Joystiq is staffed mainly by people from North America, so I don't know why you're surprised that they don't think much of SOCCER.

I'm not surprised it sold well. Many people like PES for what it is and always has been. I bought FIFA 08 as I found PES08 to be so poor, but I bought FIFA 09 when it launched and traded it two weeks later for PES09 as it felt such a soulless game. Try and stoke it about and you get battered, but some teams can stroke it about at will and PES allows you to play like that. For pure accessible joy, PES is the way. FIFA 09 reminded me of the technically decent, but dull gameplay of Actua Soccer 3 and I was sure glad to get back onto PES after playing that game for a while.
