PES 2010 is top seller in UK, Forza and FIFA close behind
Man, when is Europe going to get over this whole soccer thing? Not only do they love the real-life sport to an unhealthy degree, often leading to gang formation and general acts of hooliganism, but they also possess a collective, soul-crushing addiction for the game's many virtual representations. For instance, Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 debuted in the top sales spot for UK last week, bumping former first-place finisher FIFA 10 down to third place.
Nestled betwixt these two was Forza Motorsports 3, which admittedly has little to do with soccer. Fourth and fifth place went to Mario and Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games and WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 respectively, which have even less to do with soccer -- though the appearance of a wrestling game in the top five gives us hope for the nation. Now there's a sport.

Funny, some people around here were saying that PES 2010 would bomb in sales just because in their opinion FIFA is better than this one. Regardless, people have to get the idea that in europe, PES is big, I mean, its pratically the only game that non-gamers who like football buy or at least download illegally for the pc.
This said, I gotta admit PES commercials are all over the place in my country. Even the main sports channel around here (which normally has videogames commercial) only has PES publicity and no FIFA around here to see.
MrXile @ Oct 26th 2009 9:52AM
But PES2010 is shit.
The only reason its No.1 - is that the numpties buy it.
PES is like playing in thick mud.
Tom Waterhouse @ Oct 26th 2009 9:55AM
I'm so ashamed to be British at times. This is one of them.
eNrique @ Oct 26th 2009 2:09PM
Did you buy madden?
AUS_JD @ Oct 26th 2009 11:41PM
eNrique Madden????????
Mate, to most Europeans you would have to explain what Madden is before they can tell you they didn't buy it because it isn't about SOCCER.
In fact, to most Europeans you would have to explain the difficult concept that there are other sports besides SOCCER. A fact that may cause their heads to explode so be careful! Many Europeans truthfully have no idea that any other football sports exist.
A game about Gridiron in the UK! Most ignore their own sports in their one eyed obsession with the worlds dullest form of football, SOCCER.
And you asked about.................what was it again?????
Rosssas @ Oct 26th 2009 9:54AM
Is there a way to get rid of sports titles out of the charts? i mean they are games but not ones i care to see how they are selling. Sigh
bluezy @ Oct 26th 2009 10:23AM
We'll let you know when the Rosssas Weekly Charts get posted.

I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.
They fly so high,
Nearly reach the sky,
Then like my dreams,
They fade and die.
Fortune's always hiding,
I've looked everywhere,
I'm forever blowing bubbles,
Pretty bubbles in the air.
Green Street Hooligans is such a good movie
MrXile @ Oct 26th 2009 10:00AM
.... its called GREEN STREET
Watch The Football Factory too. Much better.
Or this years 'The Firm'.
But, not all football is about hooliganism, but these jumped up films, prove to you yanks, thats all that football contains.
greg19735 @ Oct 26th 2009 10:17AM
UNITED, UNITED
it gave me chills listening to that song when i watched the west ham vs arsenal game yesterday. love it.
Upton park sounded great when we came back from 2-0 down.
also to MrXile, in the states the movie is called Green Street Hooligans..... Its not his fault the name changed when they brought it over here
JXCgunrunna @ Oct 26th 2009 10:31AM
You may call it green street over there but we call it GSH over here. Ill check out that other movie too. Thanks
bozman @ Oct 26th 2009 10:39AM
shit film with dodgy accents.watch football factory
Space @ Oct 26th 2009 11:51AM
if you keep calling us all yanks, we're gonna keeping calling it soccer
MrSpaceCowboy @ Oct 26th 2009 10:05AM
And the trolls/fanboys be all like;
"EA keep milking FIFA Hero. PES Band has a better tracklist and better gameplay."
"FIFA Hero: Van Der Sar was terrible, no wonder they gave it away free with FIFA Hero 5."
"I can't wait to export stuff from Lego PES Band."
"Kids should go out and learn a real sport."
"If EA keep pumping out football games so often, they'll kill the genre!"
Beu @ Oct 26th 2009 10:06AM
errr Europe is not a nation.... and Africa also isn't a country like most people believe.
I'm surprised PES sold this much. i already have FIFA and looking forward to the release of PES in Canada, why games have to be released at different dates still confuses me.
By the time we in North America get to go online to play... the Europeans would have played to their hearts content hence being way better and harder to beat online if you get matched up with them.. thats been my experience in FIFA so far. I doubt PES would be different.
calgaryalta @ Oct 26th 2009 10:22AM
but in turn, having a harder competitor to play against makes you a better player in a shorter amount of time.
greg19735 @ Oct 26th 2009 12:00PM
i thought about that online advantage but because you play people based on level, its actually better to start late. Starting late means that the better players have already leveled up so you just get to play the scrubs that are either starting late or are just plain bad....It helped a lot when i was on my way to my nice fifa record :)

Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 26th 2009 11:01AM
Not as surprising as the NFL being as popular as it is over there.
But I've given up on the NFL. My team sucks.
Lookhappy @ Oct 26th 2009 10:18AM
megalolz.
PES is the game of choice here for sure. All my friends that that game go for that over Fifa it's true
Jayhawk @ Oct 26th 2009 10:20AM
"...though the appearance of a wrestling game in the top five gives us hope for the nation."
Uh, Europe? A nation? I must've missed the memo.
"For instance, Konami's Pro Evolution Soccer 2010 debuted in the top sales spot for UK..."
Oh, so we're talking about the UK here? I was unaware the UK was representative of the European continent as a whole. Sloppy writing, Joystiq.
t0ddd @ Oct 26th 2009 11:12AM
I don't think it's their "sloppy" writing, but your sloppy reading skills. Griffin never called Europe a nation but merely asked, "When will Europe get over this soccer thing?" Stop nitpicking.
OptimumEDGE @ Oct 26th 2009 10:21AM
Well they sure as hell proved my speculations wrong.
Wonder if this is a shot-term thing, or if they're in it for the long haul.
Nigeria: Charmy Bee DF @ Oct 26th 2009 10:23AM
When I see Elijah Wood, I can't help but see Spyro, the purple dragon. So the idea of Elijah Wood playing a hooligan sounds doubly ridiculous to me.
Not to suggest that violence is in any way correlated to manliness, but we've reached a nadir in manliness, it seems.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 26th 2009 10:32AM
Really? I see a little hobbit...AND HE'S GOING TO ISENGARD!
Discotheque @ Oct 26th 2009 11:37AM
Elijah Wood is Frodo first and foremost. Not bloody Spyro.
It's like saying Mark Hammill is the Joker. No, I'm sorry guys but Luke Skywalker first.
Space @ Oct 26th 2009 2:04PM
elijah wood has been in so many movies since lotr he is not frodo anymore. he's not like mark hamil where's he's only been in one thing.
I remember him from sin city more than anything.
Nigeria: Charmy Bee DF @ Oct 26th 2009 12:04PM
Me never having never seen Lord of the Rings, Elijah Wood will always be:
1) Spyro, then;
2) Sandy from Flipper, then;
3) the guy who I sometimes mistake for Tobey Maguire.
manueltaicho @ Oct 26th 2009 10:44AM
When will Europeans get over football ? When you yanks stop caring so much about crappy baseball.

IcelandTerrorist (stormtrooper190) @ Oct 27th 2009 12:16PM
i lived in Reikjavík (grafarvogur) most of my life but i now live in Akranes and have been there for over 3 years now.
chris @ Oct 27th 2009 7:04PM
Yeah, I'm not sure if I've been there, been all over the island just about. I'm sure you know I lived in the gray navy base. So dull but once you got out in town it was a much better place, the air there is so clean i miss it.. Hit me up on PSN... Mmm_fish_tacos
Pedro @ Oct 26th 2009 10:50AM
I was a big PES fan, but since it went "HD", konami really fucked up what was near to perfection by last gen standards. Nowadays I’m a FIFA player, and those o really like football should be playing this excellent game too. Graphically is shit, but gameplay, animations and physics are astonishingly fantastic, it's everything you expect from a simulation.
PES10 sales success is kinda absurd because this game fails in so many departments, in my perspective the only reason for this game unexpected success is because the ones that bought FIFA day one are buying PES as well.
Bought FIFA, downloading PES...
Pedro @ Oct 26th 2009 10:56AM
I'm sorry for the crappy grammar, but I wrote my comment in a hurry, and English ain’t my native language. : )
MrXile @ Oct 26th 2009 10:57AM
Couldnt agree more!
Pegsinho @ Oct 26th 2009 11:02AM
I reckon it's more to do with the fact that people have become so attached to PES over the good years that they will buy the crap Konami keeps churning out these days out of their blind love for the name.
Like you I used to share that attachment for PES, but then FIFA 09 came out. At first it felt a bit dirty to be playing "the enemy" but PES is now so shit I would not play it if someone paid me.
I doubt anyone who bought FIFA would want to actually buy PES too.
Ramin123 @ Oct 26th 2009 11:31AM
I know I haven't bought it, and in response to Griffin, yeah when will you yanks actually stop promoting a sport that's for girls. I'd love to see your yankee football players go against the New Zealand rugby players, it would be like watching waves crash against a cliff lol
(btw) I'm not being spiteful, or trying to be a troll, I just find it funny how every continent except Europe find the love of footall/soccer so confusing (particularly North America).
Space @ Oct 26th 2009 12:28PM
@ramin
I'm speaking as an american that lived in NZ for a while...
The all blacks are great rugby team. they're very athletic. The haka is sick in person. but in rugby they tackle to tackle and stop the run nothing more.
in the NFL they are on steroids and huge. But when they tackle, they tackle to end careers.
you just don't see the same hits in rugby. sure they wear pads on their shoulders but it's really not that much. it's mostly to prevent dislocated shoulders and spine injuries.
infact, I think the eagles used to have an aussie on their team that used to play aussie rules football. But on the eagles he was the kicker...the smallest guy on the team.
Rich @ Oct 26th 2009 12:30PM
@Ramin123: Not just Europe. Football is one of the dominant sports in every continent apart from Northern Europe. Actually, even that ignores Mexico.
I don't have a problem with the main US and Canadian sports - I have watched far too many US sports movies for that - but it always surprises me when they talk about it like some minority sport when the last world cup had a global audience of over 30 billion people according to the FIFA website.
Eh @ Oct 26th 2009 1:37PM
There must still be a lot of fanboys left. PES used to destroy FIFA on the old consoles, but PES on current consoles is just REALLY bad. Its a joke, its had the same gameplay since PES4 while FIFA keeps making significant strides with each release.
AUS_JD @ Oct 26th 2009 11:55PM
Space is spot on about the size of NFL players vs rugby players (Both League and Union)
NFL players are HUGE. A quarter back is the size of Most Rugby forwards, around 105kg to 115kg (230lbs - 250lbs). He can be like that because NFL is almost a completely anaerobic sport. Short burst of intense power. Absolutely no staying power.
If NFL players didn't wear armour, it's armour guys not padding, there would be deaths on the field. It's not about toughness. It's smart for crying out load.
In short an NFL player would last 5 minutes in Rugby because he wouldn't be able to breathe and he may have a heart attack (they have to play for up to 80min with one 10min break). A rugby player might last in NFL if he wasn't broken in his first tackle.
tykjen @ Oct 26th 2009 12:07PM
no matter how much you whine, hardcore soccer fans will never stop playing the only good alternative we can get, which has always been PES.
Chalito @ Oct 26th 2009 12:15PM
Are you kidding? the US must be about the only country on the planet that don't understand the love for football/soccer. It's appreciated in Latin America, Asia and Africa just as much as in Europe (and maybe even more in LA).
