3D Dot Game Heroes being localized by unknown 3D game publishing heroes

"No need to import," the 'SonyPlayStation' Twitter account reports. "3D Dot Game Heroes for PS3 is DEFINITELY coming to NA! Spread the word, more to come." And here we are, spreading the word.

From Software's gorgeous, retro-inspired action-RPG will be released in Japan in November, but until now, we've heard nothing about localization. And as Zelda fans and (shameful) Spelunker fans ... and fans of the retro-but-high-def aesthetic that From has assembled out of blocks, we've been listening intently.

Sony's Jeff Rubenstein told Joystiq that SCEA will not be the publisher, but the actual publisher allowed the news to be "leaked" on Twitter. He couldn't say who the publisher was or when we could expect the game, though he told us that more info will appear on the PlayStation Blog. We would speculate that it's the company who published the last (surprisingly successful) From Software PS3 game, Demon's Souls, and who deals almost exclusively in this kind of niche Japanese product: Atlus, whom we're contacting right away.

I'm really glad that ATLUS believes in these games enough to bring them stateside. Let's just hope they don't turn into a greedy crappy publisher *cough*Activision*cough*.

As a publisher, I doubt that could ever happen. Atlus USA deals in niche products in North America, and they're as surprised as we are when something is a huge hit. Activision, on the other hand, publishes mainstream products, and people's heads start rolling when numbers aren't fulfilled. The market Atlus USA targets does not really allow them to get cocky.

They are like an anime company in a way. There is a niche for their products, but none of them will ever be mainstream.

The rumor for weeks has been that Atlus and an unnamed publisher were both interested in the publishing rights. I'd be thrilled if Atlus did it, because I know there is going to be a ton of text to translate, and they are really the only people I trust to do that faithfully. It's nice to have official confirmation that it will be coming out here.

If this were any other time of year, I'd import instead of waiting. Since I'll have so much to play this holiday season though, I can definitely wait. If they can have this thing localized by March or April, that will be perfect.

Yeah I have a massive back catalog of JUST Atlus games that I wanna get. Granted not every Atlus game is necessarily amazing (I realize they are a publisher), however every Atlus game I've played, I have thoroughly enjoyed.

I'm gonna have to get a PS2 for cheap & pick up the PS2 titles that I missed, along w/ the DS titles. I might eventually have to get a PSP as well. Especially considering that it looks like Metal Slug XX (not an Atlus title) is coming to the PSP also.

I guess you could stay I'm working on acquiring a massive back catalog of JRPG's as well.

This game looks incredible. Full of warm retro-ey goodness. And if it is Atlus bringing it over (which I think it is) even better, since they love their fans as much as we love them! I'm always happy to support an Atlus project.

If this will be another AAA game that doesn't come to EU... I'll FUCKING EAT A STRAWBERRY CHEESECAKE! (Yes, I'm still incredibly annoyed with the lack of UK release of Demon's Souls)

I really do pity you. Demon's Souls is a terrific game. I've played so much and I'm still only a bit into it when compared to it's length.

On the flip side, I was disappointed that One Piece: Unlimited Cruise (both episodes) were released in the UK, whereas the US got neither.

I know you probably already know this but Ps3 is games are region free. It wouldn't cost too much to get import copy of Demon's Souls

Is importing really that bad. I would figure you would get a good deal considering the power of the Euro.

I cant believe in this day and age a game that gets localised in America isn't seeing a release in Europe. Damn you Demon's Souls.

Why tease us with the images of games that weare not going to see state side?

Im confused by what this game is. The way its been "advertised" makes it seem like its not much more than a tech demo or short indy game with no real substance other than gameplay, like a $10 PSN game. Or is it a full on epic single player game that will last hours and have an important story along with a $50+ price tag?

I thought I'd note the possibility that From Software might self-publish the title on the PS Store, same as they did recently with Armored Core 3 Portable. It's possible that 3DDGH is not that big (in terms of disk space), since its look may mean it doesn't actually use any textures whatsoever, just a single color per voxel, plus depth shading and the blurring filters. And, its sound could consist of simple synthesizers, with no recorded sound samples. Just a thought.

Armored core on the other hand I've been playing those games for at least 10 years.

enchanted arms came out 2 years ago (and I certainly would not consider it one of Atlus' better games). Atlus has been cool for over a decade, where have you been?
