The next time your friends complain about soccer being boring, you can do something slightly more productive than silently mocking their boorish lack of sophistication. You can show them this video of "Football Hero" (after the break), which consists of soccer players kicking balls into a gigantic, vibration-sensitive screen to play Frets on Fire, a freeware adaptation of Guitar Hero's core gameplay.
Then, just for us, make sure you convince them that every soccer match is exactly like this.
I think he was referring to American Football, where you run around with pillows strapped to you so when you bump into someone else for whatever gay reason American Footballers run into each other for you don't get hurt.
That was dumb.... What's more fun and something you can do at home is what I like to call Voxtar hero.
You go into rock band, put it on mic. Hook up your guitar thru an amp, (have a stomp pedal for added fun), put the mic up to the amp. Then try to match the vocals. Then if your in a solo, you can go ahead hit the stomp pedal and play the song the real way. it's really fun!
It is true, though, that soccer is considered more of a woman's sport in the United States, which has a lot to do with how consistently great our women's national team has been (two World Cups, three gold medals.) Our men's side has been gradually improving but they are still not world-class.
To my knowledge the English woman's football team is doing very well for themselves as well.
And, correct me if I'm wrong, but I heard that the British gay football team has been world champions for years. Long live the Queen! (bit of a double en tender for you to enjoy :P)
(p.s. Americans, please replace the word 'football' with 'soccer'. kthx)
To watch, yes. To play, no. Soccer is one of the funnest sports, at least to me, but it doesn't seem to to work well as a spectator sport for whatever reason.
It's the most popular sport in the world, none of the American sports come close to its popularity and no American sport can match the atmosphere, passion or excitement of a football match in Europe, South America or Africa.
I think the problem with soccer as far as Americans go is that there isn't enough scoring. I've seen soccer matches where there was ten minutes of kicking the ball back and forth and never once even saw one of the goals on tv. If the field were shorter and the goals were closer together and at least on camera, then it would be more exciting. In American sports every play is a chance at a score. In American football, every snap could be a huge touchdown pass or run. In Baseball, every pitch could be a home run, and in Basketball they score on almost every possession.
soccer is no different. each pass could lead to a breakaway. you just never know. in well-played games of any type, there is less scoring. ever watch a very lopsided soccer match? then there is a lot of scoring.
think about baseball. how many innings go by with no scoring? are you trying to say baseball is more exciting the soccer? baseball is IMHO the most boring widely watched sport, besides perhaps golf.
i think the lack of scoring makes the game more exciting. Its hard to care when someone scores a basket in basketball because it's just not important.
the best game i've seen recently is a 2-2 draw (west ham vs arsenal). and that was incredibly exciting. The fact that there was only 2 goals for each team means that when those went in, it mattered. Also, my team came from 2-0 down to get back up to 2-2. While that doesn't sound huge, it really was quite amazing.
A hockey rink is much smaller then a soccer field, so I think it has to do with the puck constantly being in close proximity to the goal. This doesn't happen nearly as often in soccer, so it might not be as exciting for some people.
How does anyone find basketball interesting though? Run. Score. Run. Score. Repeat times 100. That team missed 2 baskets, so they lose. End.
Personally though, I don't buy the oft-repeated argument that americans don't like soccer because there aren't enough goals. As other have pointed out, scoring goals doesn't generate excitement. It's like not liking boxing because there's only one knockout per match.
I think it just doesn't have enough snack breaks. For example, watching baseball on tv is mindumbingly dull. But when I watched it in the stadium I discovered it was actually fun. You got lots of convenient breaks to get up and go get hot dogs, beer, nachos, burgers, etc. And everyone stood up and sang a cute song at one point. American football is the same, you get a break every 5 minutes to go get more food and beer.
It's definitely something we should incorporate into football. Except i'm not sure we need some fans getting more beer.
