Frogger Returns, crosses street to WiiWare and PlayStation Network
Konami shocked us by announcing a complete reboot of Frogger, reimagined by American McGee as a dark, twisted platformer about a frog on a quest for revenge.
Wait, they didn't do that. Instead, they announced Frogger Returns, a by-the-numbers follow-up to the arcade classic that has you taking the titular mascot from one side of the screen to the other. This modern take on the franchise adds a few power-ups (like the ability to reverse and stop time) and invincibility. Whoa, who knew frogs could do all that?
Frogger Returns promises to be "12 times the size of the original" and will also offer "local multiplayer," according to the official press release. No details on price were revealed, but Konami's aiming for a release on both WiiWare and PlayStation Network later this fall.

He's not wearing clothes, nor is he standing.
Well, we're on the right track already.
KeenCommander @ Oct 27th 2009 9:32PM
The previous Frogger remake looked better than that. I actually liked that game quite a bit.
MechaGamerX @ Oct 27th 2009 9:35PM
Agreed
Though, I only played Swampy's Revenge...

There should be a secret level involving moving a Frogger arcade machine across a busy New York City street.
Cookie for the first person to guess this reference...

Seinfeld. The episode where George buys a Frogger arcade machine from a business that is closing down. He tries to get it across the street, but it ends up getting smashed.

Worth (at most) about $5. Local multiplayer? What is this, 1996??
Emblazin @ Oct 27th 2009 9:48PM
No, this is 2009. Don't be a prick and just be grateful they added multiplayer. Jesus kids these days are getting to be more and more ungrateful.
"It doesn't print money? Damnit screw this game."

You must be a die-hard Frogger fan, didnt mean to offend you. I can understand this game would send massive amounts of packet data for online multiplayer, and would be a huge strain on servers and all, I was just expecting it to be in there since that's the trend nowadays with all the fancy technology out there.
Im no kid either, unless being 30 years old counts as one. In that case, thanks for the compliment.
RenegadeRSO @ Oct 27th 2009 10:58PM
I wouldn't assume he's a die-hard frogger fan. It's just that local multiplayer shouldn't be as overlooked as it seems to be nowadays. Whatever happened to actually having real friends and inviting them to your house to sit on a crappy couch and play video games with you. I like online multiplayer but I would much rather play with my actual friends as they sit next to me. But then again, maybe I'm just a die-hard fan of old-school gaming on a crappy couch.

Maybe it's the child in you? lol

I did enjoy the original 3D Frogger when it came out in 1997. That one had local multiplayer too. That one also had Internet play.
If they could do it back then, why won't they do it now?
That_Guy436 @ Oct 27th 2009 9:44PM
I would so buy the game if it was made by American McGee.
AoE @ Oct 27th 2009 9:51PM
I know, right? After Scrapland I feel like everything that man touches is pure gold.

LOL yeah kids today are never satisfied with anything they get.. Or all you hear is this stupid line Oh my friends have it why can't I have it as well!.. Or this Everybody's doing it why can't I !?..Or this line I'm calling the Social Worker/Police because you won't let me have it my way!.. Omg someone shut this annoying brat up!..We should force the Younger Generation to Play the Original Atari and NES consoles!!..Let then learn to play fair and stop hacking and cheating as well Force them to feel what it was like in the late 70's and early 80's when there was no Computers etc.. Lol Suckers!..I'd also say this to the parents of this generation.. "If you want your bratty kids online don't put them in our situation meaning get your scrawny kids out of Call Of Duty!!!!!! BUY THEM GAMES THAT ARE FOR THERE AGE--> NOT 17+ UP YOU STUPID IDIOTS! READ THE ESRB!..THAT'S UNLESS YOU NEED TO GO BACK TO KA KA SCHOOL!!!!

On a serious note, that really should be a secret level. Seriously.

"12 times the size of the original"
That we can assure ... at least that rat is 12 times the size of the "original" =P

When the hell did Frogger get so grungy? It looks like the 90's hitched a ride with Frogger for the return.
Shoyz @ Oct 28th 2009 6:39AM
Although 'retro' is starting to seem a bit generic at this point, it'd look much better than this 3D remake. Looks like a game that'd come out back in 1999.
Haohmaru (PSN - DimmuBurgerKing XBL - A Real Puppet ) @ Oct 28th 2009 9:00AM
The lack of online co-op doesn't bother me much. For me, a lot of the fun in these retro PSN/XBL/WiiWare releases comes in the form of leaderboards competition. A couple of friends and I are constantly trying to beat each other's scores in Pac-Man CE on XBL and various games in the Namco collection on PSN.
Ghoti @ Oct 28th 2009 9:44AM
I hope this makes its way to XBLA as well.
JJBro1 @ Oct 28th 2009 12:41PM
Did anyone play frogger on the ps1? That game was one of my fondest memories on the ps1 as a kid.
taurus82 (Point & Click-Graphic Adventures on PlayStation 3 Please) @ Oct 28th 2009 11:19AM
They should have called it 'Highway Crossing Frog'.
Monongahela Monster @ Oct 28th 2009 2:29PM
Whenever something gets "reimagined," that's usually a bad sign. When something gets reimagined in such a way as to make it Dark And Gritty, that's a sign that you shouldn't touch it with a ten-foot pole.
That_Guy436 @ Oct 28th 2009 7:54PM
Whoa where did that rant come from? Though I do agree with ya. When I start to have kids, and they get to the age to play games which is like 3 yrs old (that's how old I was when my dad bought me a NES with Super Mario Bros/Duck Hunt), I'll prob get a wii and download those old games for them to play.
