Gamasutra breaks down console sales in light of price cuts
64
If you're like us -- and, we figure after all these years we've been secretly brainwashing you, you are -- then the recent console price cuts were met with your curiosity over how these discounts would affect the vast gaming sales landscape. Fortunately, Gamasutra has posted a chart (using NPD figures) that measures how the price cuts altered two factors: each console's average sale price during the month of September and its year-to-date sales (through September).
This first figure proves the most telling about how the market reacted to the slashed prices. For instance, the average price at which PS3s were purchased in September was a flat $300; meaning an overwhelming majority of buyers responded favorably to the discount. Though the price of the Wii didn't get cut until the last week of September, the console's average price dropped to $218 -- also indicative of a reactionary market surge. The average Xbox 360 purchased price, however, actually increased by a buck to $261. By Gamasutra's calculations, folks purchased three Elites ($300) for every Arcade model ($200) sold during the month.
The PS3 was the top-selling console in September, which is the first time it's ever managed a first-place sales finish. It's still in last place in the 2009 year-to-date totals, though, and Sony's system would need to outsell Xbox 360 by about 35,000 units every week until the end of the year to break even with its competitor. Passing up the Wii, however, would require an act of divine intervention -- Nintendo's console is currently sitting on YTD sales of 4 million, which is more than twice the total of PS3 sales.

I'll be contributing to console sales in November. I'm picking up the MW2 Xbox 360 bundle. This will be the third 360 I've bought. I bought the second one for HDMI, which made integrating into my home entertainment system much easier.
I geeked out when the slim PS3 came out. I want the new thing, but I've got an original 60 GB PS3. So, if I went slim, I'd give up PS2 back compat, 2 USB ports and the card readers. Not that I use any of them a ton.

I once predicted that the PS would once again sell the most overall units of the current generation consoles. Of course, at that time I never imagined Nintendo would sell so many Wiis. I thought for sure that thing would flop. I still believe it's possible, but it won't be easy.

I didn't realize that 360 is actually tracking ahead of last year. That's crazy given the economy. Congrats to MSFT.
I am also surprised at Sony's drop. I didnt' realize 2008 was that big for them.
Also, a big drop for Nintendo, but still huge sales. Huge install base of people not buying good 3rd party games. Jerks.

It didn't. The 360 outsold the PS3 last year.
It is just that , by the end of September 2008 the PS3 was ahead.
Then the holidays hit and the 360 took the lead.
I think the PS3 might pull ahead this year. It has picked up some momentum going into the holiday season.

I always wonder what kind of boost 360 gets from the multiplayer crowd. I.E. do people buy what their friends have when they see them playing MW2 or L4D2 or Borderlands so they can be a part of the crowd.
PS3 has a great exclusive in Uncharted 2, but are people buying a PS3 to play Uncharted 2 with their friends? Or are their friends all playing MW2 on 360 anyways?

I would say the multiplayer crowd helps out LOADS I dont play xbox but I would assume its the same
Uncharted is a good game not the best but very good but I would definately pass it over if it didnt have multiplayer I tend to find games without multiplayer a chore because I dont want to play through the same story again because I have seen it before that is why I doubt I will platinum inFamous and Prototype had fun the first time but that was enough

Another thing that must be considered is both 360 and PS3 have new bundles coming out before the holidays... The PS3 has an increased hard drive system and the 360 has the MW LE bundle coming out (with a larger Hard Drive)

I don't know why these sales #s are so important to people other than FanBoys.....
Competition breeds quality.......we all know that.
We also know that the Wii is marketed to a different demographic than the 360 or PS3 and that its price point was always going to be lower so of course its sales would be better (especially in a down economic market).
It will be VERY interesting to see what happens this XMAS with the PS3 being cheaper, and the 360 (at least the ARCADE unit) reaching the Wii Price Point.
The biggest obstacle I see for SONY & Microsoft is getting those casual Wii gameplayers (of which the majority are who buy maybe 1-2 games if any for their wii a year that are Nintendo Only titles) to evolve into avid non-waggle type videogame players like the 360/PS3 markets.
