Like other retailers, North America's largest video game brick-and-mortar chain will be gearing up for the holiday sales rush with a flood of new, temporary employees. GameStop is bolstering its "game advisors" numbers by 78% (see: grunts) and the company's total employee population by 46% (see: covenant) -- that's 15,000 people altogether, RTT News reports.
While the employees will be considered "seasonal," they will reportedly receive the same benefits to working at the company as any other employee, including game borrowing and an employee discount. No word on whether they'll also get the complimentary demoralization and up-selling technique training.

Yeah, I used to work at EB during the time the merger happened. I was DAMN lucky I got my job. I didn't really know anyone in the store at all. I was only on for the holidays (I actually had another job as well), but the next holiday the store manager brought me right back and I stayed on part time after that.
The pay sucks, but if you get a good manager it can be a lot of fun. :)

I'm an SGA and we're hiring 7.
What someone mentioned above is true though. Come in every once in awhile and get to know the staff and make a good impression on the management. Usually when it comes time for hiring and you put in an application we'll actually make sure the manager gets it instead of sitting it on his desk to be buried by mountains of crap.
On the other hand, don't be that annoying guy who shows up all the time begging for a job. We can't stand you, no one likes you, stay away. If we're all going to be friends its going to happen naturally, not by you brute forcing your way into a friendship. Those are the people whose applications get filed immediately with no mention of it even existing.
People who know tons about video games are useful, but they generally don't make good salesmen. Good salesmen can learn a lot about video games, that's why they get hired instead of the other guy. Its much easier to teach someone about video games than how to sell them.
Then again, why the FUCK would you want to work for this terrible company? Seriously, fuck getting screwed over with trade-ins or missing reserve premiums. The actual job part of it sucks 10x more than shopping there.

@ Malachi
Your right on the people who can be annoying in coming in all the time but I disagree with you on the company. I really like working for GameStop! I worked myself up from a GA up to LGA, then SGA, then ASM in a 1 year span. I am a really good salesman and although I do think we can be a little annoying asking for Subs, Reserves, add-ons, etc. It's what we do and I mean come on, this is the best place to work in retail! Even when I get my associates in CNS/IST, I will probably still stay at gamestop for a part-time 1 or 2 day a week job just so I can get my discount, free check-outs, and to know all the new stuff coming out!

Yeah, it's because of people like you that small town guys like me can't ever find a job. Everyone just hires their buddies from church or whatever, leaving guys like me (with actual real skills but no higher-up friends) with no job. Good going ruining it for the rest of us, pal.

It could be the stores we each work in. Our store is always understaffed and heavily overtasked so it gives the store a very hectic and depressing feeling of hopelessness because our DM is always on our backs making us change stupid things that he set up less than a week before. Then we get customer complaints because he's tying us up doing other things instead of allowing to help the customers.
I've heard quite a bit from stores are mine that its not that bad, but the bar was set so high at my store that if we fall below it we're failing as a store but to get above it we have almost no choice but to be assholes and push every sale full of extra crap that we know and you know you don't need but we've got to sale it. I really wonder what its like with other DMs because ours is a complete failure but they keep him around because his district does well, not by anything he does but because he has good people on staff and 90% of them were there before he arrived.
As for the guy complaining about not getting hired despite being highly qualified for the job. That's part of the problem by itself. You don't want to hire someone OVER qualified for the job because then they tend to get resentful at how much they're being paid so its easier to get someone slightly under qualified and train them up to the level they need to be. GA positions are entry level, thus they are best suited for people looking for their first job or people who just don't have that much experience in the workplace.

Just got hired monday, i work there every season for a last few years, make $150-250 for the 8 weeks i'm on schedule and with the discounts, i get the games or system i want at that time of the year. There's atleast one weekend we get 50% off games, so piss on those who hate GS I'm happy with what i do for the short time I'm there, play games, make money selling those games and enjoy the fact i pay less than those who whine about their policies.

Sadly, my store is required to hire someone. I don't get more than 9 hours most weeks, and we're hiring more...Granted, holiday hours are coming...but it's still going to be shitty hours...

Dude i know the feeling, when i was working there we were getting like 5 hours a week. Complete garbage..

I don't get it. You'd think they'd save money by hiring less people and working the current employees more. They'd save on training and paperwork at the very least.

I don't have to be full time Isacc, I have a full time job that i make 3 times that much, i just use the system get the discounts while you have to pay full price at walmart....

Haha, I get like 10 hours a week, but I don't want all of them. I'm a college student though, so that's why. I keep the job for the discount while I'm at school. I absolutely love my job though, and it's not uncommon for me to work 30+ hour weeks over the summer as a GA. I'll be working a couple of 40 hour weeks over the holidays...
"No word on whether they'll also get the complimentary demoralization and up-selling technique training."
The answer to that is no, at least at the store where I work. We get seasonal GA's that can walk the floors and offer assistance, and put away games. Then again, I've been to countless Gamestops, and I've never seen one like my store where EVERYTHING is in alphabetical order, even the 4.99 and 9.99 PS2 bins.

Yeah 5-10 hours a week sucks, but i've been doing this seasonal work for awhile, so i'm used to this, but i have a full time job. Ya know what, it's an easy job, i make some extra bucks and i get what i want. Some people are quick to knock, but games aren't cheap, and when the season is over i get around 5-8 games or one system with what i save that i don't have to take out of my FT job paycheck(that goes to bills). Unless mommy and daddy pay for your games, some people have to work that 2nd or 3rd job to afford the nicer things for their children or even themselves..

I remember this one EB Games store in my area (6-7 years ago) that had only girls working there with the exception of one guy. It was a military town too, so I'm sure it was a plot to get young marines to buy games.
I was offered an Assistant Store Manager position there after interviewing for a "normal" position there. During the interview process the manager gave me a pen & told me to try to sell him the pen. I was like WTF? lol
Anyways I turned the job down because I was in school @ the time & couldn't just drop out. Plus the store manager seemed a bit fruity to me (whether or not it was true I don't know), but it made me uncomfortable. That store seemed to have such a high turn over ratio. From managers to typical employees.

I worked @ a Gamestop in the mall (before the EB merger) temporary for the holidays. It was pretty fun. I was already working in the mall before I started working there. I was working for AT&T Wireless (then it was Cingular) @ a kiosk in the mall. I enjoyed working in the mall away from the douchebag store manager, but HATED working mall hours.
Usually what I would do while it was slow @ the kiosk is to lock things up & go hang out @ Gamestop for 20 mins @ a time or so. I got to know the guys working there which helped me to get my job there. I only worked like 10 hours over a 2 week time span, but it was fun. It was nice to make some extra cash w/ already making pretty decent money @ Cingular. I also remember Gamestop selling manga. Does anyone else remember this? This would have been around 2002-2003.
It was so much nicer back then when EB Games & Gamestop were separate companies. I loved shopping @ both stores & there actually being competition.

Blech, job market has been pretty crap lately (I've barely gotten any results of the last three months of searching), so unless the job fair this week gets me some results, I might have to bear GameStop for a while. ANYTHING to avoid working at AMC again.

I know someone that worked @ an AMC in the mall. I heard that people would piss on the carpet & whatnot. In fact on the few times I went to that theater, the carpets in the hallways were stained horribly bad, & did in fact smell. Gotta love mall "rats".

Honestly if there was a Gamestop closer than an hour away from me, I'd definitely apply. There aren't many job prospects in this town unless you're good with cars, and I definitely am not.
