Gearbox details known Borderlands glitches, workarounds
After dealing with shortages and that PS3 friends list thing, a few Borderlands players have now reported encountering an online glitch that erases everything. Yes, folks -- it's so bad, we had to put it in italics.
You can check out the list of ongoing issues for yourself over at the Gearbox forums, where the biggest perpetrator is undoubtedly the glitch that causes a player's stats to be downgraded to a big fat zero following another player joining or vacating an online match. Another glitch does the same thing, only with your entire inventory of weapons; Gearbox says the worst issues are fairly infrequent, as scary as they may sound.
As of right now, there's currently no fix or workaround for a lot of the potential game breakers, though the majority of issues aren't as bad as those listed above. Still, Gearbox is working to resolve these issues and if you've found something that isn't on the list, we suggest you hit up the technical support section. We can all make these lands a better place ... together.

In Italics! The humanity!
Jack Tretton @ Oct 27th 2009 5:20PM
Joystiq bloggers love italicizing -- they think it makes it easier to spot the funny.
Dirty @ Oct 27th 2009 3:20PM
Oh man, I would freak out. For the sake of my controllers/furniture/neighbors patch this quick like.
Anthony M. @ Oct 27th 2009 3:57PM
This happened to my friend last night. He lost his Shield, Class Mod, ALL weapon proficiencies... (takes a while to level those up)
Oh and, ALL THIS SKILL POINTS. He's level 37 with 1 skill point now. Super Cool.
Hopefully the fix for it will resurrect his lost skill points at LEAST. Otherwise he's stuck making his same character all over again.
Ghen @ Oct 27th 2009 3:58PM
I would just stop playing the game. My wife had her account hacked on WoW and everything stolen (bad add-on) but eventually got everything back. If Borderlands doesn't have a backup of characters and you have to start over I'd just quit.
Pablos102030 @ Oct 27th 2009 6:40PM
My friend had something similar happen to him at level 27. Except when he joined my game again, he was back to normal, and had 20 extra skill points.
Nick @ Oct 27th 2009 6:50PM
The devs HAVE said they are able to get everything back, so there must be a way to track it.
At least if you can get your stats back/inventory slots/etc back, the guns being gone sucks, but you can always buy those back.
Punishment4Gluttons @ Oct 27th 2009 7:41PM
This is why all games should have multiple save slots.
Residentevil72501 (PSN: rankore) @ Oct 27th 2009 8:56PM
Plus you can just get a friend who has beaten the game to take you to the Reliquary or NewGame+ and you will be level 30 in less than 10 minutes on a brand new toon. So losing all your data really isnt that big of a hindrance.
The1stMJC @ Oct 27th 2009 3:22PM
This is why I wait 2 weeks or so after games come out usually before I buy them. This gen relies too much on the patch it later mentality.
Danthok @ Oct 27th 2009 3:34PM
Agreed, but a glitch like this might not be seen in the testing phase due to the rarity of the situation.
So my question is, is Borderlands fun enough where you say oh well after losing 20 hours of gameplay and start again from zero?
jimbo @ Oct 27th 2009 3:44PM
Short answer, yes it is that fun where you would start over. You have to start over just to get to lvl 50, and then the game just continues to get better and better. If you wanted you could burn through your first playthrough in no time.
But I've already put in 66 hrs, no other game I have logged so many hours so quickly, hands down the best co-op gameplay.
The glitches are annoying though and they will affect you, I've already got achievements that won't unlock and weapon progress resets when you leave a game youre not hosting, it's annoying but no deal breaker.
Space @ Oct 27th 2009 4:00PM
good god..I think I've played 66 hours of all of my games combined in the past two months!
The1stMJC @ Oct 27th 2009 4:04PM
yea It may not have been seen, but I tend to stay away from games with online the 1st couple of weeks for these reasons. Once they are acknowledged and fixed I buy the game
Monica Dickey @ Oct 27th 2009 11:32PM
Hey play platform roulette!
360 looks to have the least issues... Glad I got it for that and not PC
Professor Lario @ Oct 27th 2009 3:27PM
This may be the only game I wouldn't be THAT mad if I lost my save. Just gives me an excuse to replay the thing. Yes, it's that fun.
Special Agent Steve @ Oct 27th 2009 4:45PM
I concur. Who says glitches are all bad?
Jouten @ Oct 27th 2009 11:47PM
It is DEFINITELY that fun! =)
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 27th 2009 3:28PM
The only serious glitch I've run into that I couldn't find on the list is one that happened to me yesterday. Me and my friend made new characters to get the class specific achievements, and I lost connection right when we killed nine toes and when I logged back into his game the quest was done, only I didn't get credit for the kill. I tried exiting and doing it on my own but he still doesn't show up.
It's not a huge deal, because I was using Mordecai and I don't like him at all, or his class talent so I won't be playing anymore with him. Other than that little hiccup the game runs flawless.
oxymoronx420 @ Nov 4th 2009 8:27AM
I've had missions like that before, what I did to fix it was go into a LOWER level server that the player hasn't yet finished the mission and re-completed it with the lower level host.... fixed!
343 Guilty Fart @ Oct 27th 2009 3:28PM
Just got this game yesterday and am already feeling the cold, deathless grip of addiction. They need to send Dr. Drew over immediately. I just wish there was a bit more interaction with the NPCs (especially more voice acting).
mirilene @ Oct 27th 2009 3:29PM
So this has got to be in the top 10 worst launches ever right? A co-op game that is broken on one console and totally jacked up on the PC (not to mention using gamespy at all like its 1998) bugs with inventory, stats...
Where's the funny video with a lot of attitude explaining to us how all this crap passed QC? I guess we sure did get mainstreamed, right in the nuts.
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 27th 2009 3:51PM
And yet...you can still play Single Player and have tons of fun.
Bane @ Oct 27th 2009 4:04PM
@mirilene
That has to be one of the Top 10 most ignorant comments.
This game kicks ass and I hope it does well enough to warrant a sequel.
legato895 @ Oct 27th 2009 3:32PM
so no reporting on the terrible gamespy failure of launch (and maybe even now) or the sloppy port job on the pc version?...
joeybeast @ Oct 27th 2009 3:41PM
does the pc version support lan?
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 27th 2009 3:52PM
The PC version is still the definitive...
No crappy draw distance, superior controls.
Sure, the textures are still kind of mediocre...but still better.
LegendaryRedass @ Oct 27th 2009 4:34PM
Taiko, on 360 this game has an excellent draw distance. The best I've seen on a console. That includes fallout or oblivion. I haven't seen any popup at all, and that's pretty damn good for unreal engine. I'm sure it's awesome on pc, but the console version is far from disappointing.
So far the only bug I've seen is my ammo in the weapon I'm carrying resetting to default after opening the menu, and having to reload the mag. That's after I upgraded the ammo count.
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 27th 2009 5:28PM
Oh no, I wasn't bashing the console versions at all. I actually bought both PC and 360 versions, and love them both. I will agree that it's good, but PC is still the best.
The increased draw distance is the biggest difference I've seen, and it's the one I'm enjoying the most, even more than mouse and keyboard.
Abi @ Oct 27th 2009 3:37PM
No achievements for PC version... lame! It's still a fun game. I'm almost at level 20.
My only problem was the a boss monster in the arena around level 17. I almost had it killed till it disappeared and had to restart it. Also, the pc version includes controller support but still displays instructions for m+kb.
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 27th 2009 3:43PM
Displaying instructions for one fo the main reasons to buy on PC. OH NOES.
MrKlorox @ Nov 3rd 2009 11:39PM
What a fucking douchey reply. His complaint is legitimate.
Sidebuster @ Oct 27th 2009 3:38PM
Oh man, I literally almost bought it on steam right now. I've been trying to find a negative review for the game (they help more than positive ones) and haven't been able to find any. All I ever come across is Borderland Blowjobs. I honestly can't see what is making this game so great?
Can anyone point me to some nega-reviews or something?
Taiko Drum Grandmaster @ Oct 27th 2009 3:46PM
Ummmm...
Diablo-esque loot hunting.
Serious Sam-esque co-op.
Solid shooting mechanics (FPS, hurr).
MMO-esque skill trees.
I mean...if this isn't enough awesome for you...you need some help.
Amazing art style.
Lots of quests.
Humorous.
I mean...There really isn't much to not like about this game...There's a reason you see a bunch of 'Borderlands Blowjobs'.
Xero @ Oct 27th 2009 4:54PM
Borderlands blowjobs? where do i sign up?
C.A. @ Oct 27th 2009 5:01PM
Hahaha! That is so awesome! If you can't find a bad review anywhere if it possible the game might actually be good? I've never seen anyone upset that all the reviews for a game were good and then not want it because of that.
Okay, to help you out...
1) The game has long load times.
2) It is a Diablo-esque shooter, so if you aren't finding cool new upgrades you feel sad. (Which is usually when I find a cool new upgrade)
3) The quests aren't super deep.
4) The world needs more npc's that matter. Maybe even some that wander the wastes.
Theses are all NITPICKING though! The game is awesome and well worth your money. If you can't have fun playing this videogames may not be your thing.
Dirty @ Oct 27th 2009 5:17PM
The in-game music is boring. If you playing by yourself it really doesn't feel too exciting. Although if you have a friend you cant hear much over the gun shots anyway. I just use my own music. Thats like the worst thing I can think of.
Sidebuster @ Oct 28th 2009 12:33AM
Do I need friends to have fun in this game? I don't have any that play video games.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 27th 2009 3:44PM
Yeah I'd say the PC problems are worse:
-Multiplayer uses forced GameSpy accounts
-Multiplayer doesn't work for most players without port forwarding
-No manual available through Steam
-Game wouldn't launch via Steam unless you booted in Offline Mode first
That said, it is a really good game!
Premature ejaculation man @ Oct 28th 2009 12:57AM
Is there LAN? =o
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 28th 2009 7:48AM
Yes, there is LAN play.
What did you think, this was Starcraft 2?
Joe @ Oct 27th 2009 3:44PM
I have had this one happen twice. Once for 2000 xp and another for like 10,000xp give or take.
Issue: (360, PS3) Skill points are gained after another player joins or leaves a game
Frequency: Very Low
baby sea tuna @ Oct 27th 2009 3:51PM
I have now tried 2 times to buy this game, unsuccessfully. I am going to hit a *gasp* Gamestop on the way home tonight and if I can't find it there, I'm going to have to say "fuck it" and forego it for Dragon Age next week.
Vidikron @ Oct 27th 2009 3:58PM
I've only encountered one glitch. It was on one of those missions where you have to find all the pieces of a gun. One of the pieces simply wasn't there and the map was showing the final piece to be at the spot where I picked up the first piece.
STEVE @ Oct 27th 2009 4:24PM
It happened to me too but it is not a glitch! Keep looking it is there. It's not where the waypoint is located but it is in the area.
That has happened on a few quest where I had to find a few items and they were not at the way point marker.
Professor Lario @ Oct 27th 2009 4:32PM
I had the same issue. Try activating a different quest in the log and then reactivating the gun quest. You could also try leaving the area and going back in.
Dr. steve brule @ Oct 27th 2009 5:15PM
i had something similar, im not sure if this is a glitch or supposed to happen but, i started fighting scar, the skag. got him halfway down in health and then boom out of nowhere he disappeared, i had to go back to the arid badlands and then back to skag gully for him to reappear, the funny thing was that they were showing the leg or my next mission objective in the middle of that platform where you fight him but he was nowhere to be seen. maybe he hides sometimes?
Bloodburn @ Oct 27th 2009 4:14PM
Not to mention the PC driving issues.
no WASD car control, just WS for forward and backward, to turn you have to use the arrow keys, so it makes it nearly impossible to drive....sigh
XLM @ Oct 27th 2009 4:41PM
I didn't have any trouble driving once I realized that the drive controls are Halo-esque.
W and S = Forward/Backward
Point the mouse where you want to go.
Not my favorite control scheme by a long shot, but once I realized what it was doing, it was doable.
Pdriver @ Oct 27th 2009 4:08PM
Time to back up my save game to a USB stick!
