As it turns out, she came from the future to kill someone's mother so that ... okay, yeah, we're just making that up. Everyone knows that you couldn't bring back all those fancy guns through time! Duh! It's really that her family was attacked when she was a baby and even though the attacker came after her, she lived and ... alright, it's not that either. Rather than trust ourselves to relay it, we'll just let the developers explain Bayonetta themselves in the video after the break.
Bayonetta's first dev diary explains protagonist's origins

Platinum Games' Hideki Kamiya and Yusuke Hashimoto may not be taking the story super seriously in upcoming third-person action game Bayonetta, but that doesn't mean no effort was exerted in creating the title character's backstory.

I think I speak for everyone when I say no one gives a fuck about her backstory.
Hell, I'm pretty sure the people the designers don't even care.

Heh, everyone thinks they're innovative.
Angels as enemies were done in cave story, obscure though it is.
Bayonetta looks great, though.

I tried to fix her proportions with Photoshop.
Sorry for the personal blog link. I hate when people do this. I'm a hypocrite:

Me no likey. You should've kept her hips & increased the breasts!!
I think the only problem with Bayonetta is that her head is too small.

See that is part of my problem. It isn't just her head, her rib cage is huge!
They act like they increased her bust, but they just inflated her rib cage with air so she has a giant back and small breasts. She's just overall disgusting.
I will admit in my pic I made her butt smaller then I wished.

Yeah, you're right. Bayonetta is disproportional all over... look at her shoulders.
I think they just took all their favorite characteristics of a women & put 'em together without considering the "realness".
Kinda like plastic surgery & unnatural perfection.

Man, how can you spend so much time worrying about her proportions when there is so much ELSE in the game to be looking at? Like the giant chainsaw, or the badass angel enemies, or the sparkly combo effects, or the middle-finger motorcycle, or the dragon that you can suplex...
Also she can quad-wield rocket launchers for Pete's sake. I don't think realism is a high priority here...

Question remains........will both the 360 and PS3 versions be identical or will the PS3 version be the inferior one? It boggles my mind that when a multiplatform game is released there is always some ridiculous comparison even though all versions of the game are identical unless intentionally created otherwise. I won't even go into the stupid comparisons that Arkham Asylum got here on Joystiq (where they were comparing colors and shadows between 360 and PS3....none of which were even noticeable if at all really there.)
So far since an outside developer is working on the PS3 version there have been rumors that their version will be noticeably inferior to the 360 version. I certainly hope that isn't the case. It will be unfortunate for people who only have a PS3 to get a poorer version of a game that looks like it's going to be a solid title. While I'm sure that even if that were true the game will still be just as fun. It would just be a shame that all the intended flare to the game might be undercut on the PS3.

The demoes were compared and the framerate on the 360 is a lot better even though there are still screen tearing on the 360 version, it's not as bad. Some developers just still don't get it. Most games these days though are equal to the 360 version and Batman is a great example that if the developer tried, they can get the game to look the same.

Whoever did the subtitles for this video needs to learn better grammar. "Bayonetta's weapons very from short range", lolwut? Should be "vary".

@useedems: Uhm, no. The word was spelled properly. "Very" is a real word you know. However it was not used properly, hence "grammar".
