Beneath a Steel Sky Remastered nears 20K sold; Revolution expects 100K lifetime sales
The modern jazzification (totally not a made-up word) of retro adventure title Beneath a Steel Sky has been a fairly lucrative move on Revolution Software's part, as managing director Charles Cecil says (via GI.biz) iPhone remake Beneath a Steel Sky Remastered is on track to sell 20,000 copies in its first month -- and that's not including the first week of the month, as it wasn't available in the App store until October 8.
But it's just a stepping stone to greater financial success, Cecil says. He anticipates the game will sell around 70,000 copies in its first year of release, eventually peaking at 100,000 copies sold in its lifetime. Cecil credits the Apple model (cheap, easy to use and easier to purchase content than it is to pirate) and Revolution's ability to exploit its own games "in a way that you could never do at a mainstream publisher." He also says that daily sacrifices to the almighty Lord Kromdor certainly didn't hurt.*
*Yes, we made up that last one, silly. Revolution worships Cthulhu, duh!

I didn't even know this existed. Thanks for posting about it!

The screenshot was the bit I got stuck on my first playthrough (when I was all of seven or eight!) - really arbitrary bit where you had to get the dog to jump into the water to distract the guard. Makes sense now, but there were no indications in the game to do it.
Still, it's brilliant, go buy it.

I've never played this game, but I love its name, and its name alone makes me want to play it.

That doesn't really look "remastered" and the original is freeware.
I would like Broken Sword re-released with newly recorded voice tracks, since the quality of the old ones is pretty bad (between her accent and the compression, understanding Nico is really hard without subtitles), but the animation and backgrounds are already so great they don't even need to be touched up.
I'm an adventure game nerd wootles

All of the Dave Gibbons art elements (and the soundtrack maybe?) are what is remastered. The Dave Gibbons art in the original game was very pixel-looking, it looks much higher quality now, he went back and redid alot of it.

Great, now hurry up and put it on Steam.
Timett @ Oct 28th 2009 8:56AM
It's free at gog.com
What do you need it on Steam for?
Ebichu @ Oct 28th 2009 9:05AM
Yea, I wasn't aware that it was freeware now untill I read Filthy Assistant's comment about it. whoops! And to think I would have gladly pay for it :p

First game developers recycled old ideas, now they recycle old games.
Ironically, Beneath a Steel Sky was a pretty mediocre adventure game back in the day. It's best quality was not being Lure of the Temptress (Revolution's earlier game which was actually bad), which isn't saying much.
Filthy Assistant @ Oct 28th 2009 9:49AM
Really, its best quality was that the backgrounds were drawn by Dave Gibbons. I found it pretty uninteresting as a whole. Had some major pixel-hunt moments too.

I played this on Good ole Games, it was fun though I don't remember if I used gamefaqs or not to beat it. Having said that, I don't have a iPhone or Ipod touch so I suppose I can feel okay about not having bought it.

It is such an excellent Adventure game.
I hope this is enough to finally warrant a sequel.
