There was something of an outcry in the Xbox community when Microsoft announced that the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard Update would disable "unauthorized" memory units. Datel, a manufacturer of such devices, recently expressed its disappointment following the announcement. Fortunately, it looks like it takes more than that to keep a good company down, as Maxconsole.net reports that Datel intends to release a solution to the problem.
In a letter to retailers, Datel stated it was "aware of the changes that are required to remedy this problem and will shortly release a solution in readiness for this potential update." Naturally, the company didn't elaborate on the necessary changes. Datel also didn't supply a precise release date for the updated memory units, saying only that they would be available "shortly." Still, it's good news for folks that want more memory for less-than-exorbitant prices.

Datel is a shady company. Sony sued them earlier this year for unauthorized batteries for the psp 3000.

So instead of just hating on MS, try looking at the big picture. Datel reverse engineered the memory units to get around paying royalty fees.
It's like having a BBQ sauce that you owned and sold, and someone else broke down your recipe in a lab and sold it for cheaper.

i have no clue why but it really does have to do with people simply hating on ms and no matter what the scenario will paint ms as the bad guys when in this case even datel a pretty shady company known to promote cheating and hacking some how have gotten labeled as some kind hero vigilante...

Yea, I feel like the hate is kind of misplaced here. Yes, it was a dick move for MS to block out these memory cards, but Datel knew this could happen anytime when they sold people unlicensed cards. At the end of the day it's microsofts platform, and Datel never had the authority to sell these products for it in the first place. Datel screwed over their customers by selling unlicensed, unsupported memory cards after trying to dodge licensing fees. Microsoft didn't do what it did to screw over their customers, they did it to protect their proprietary platform. And it sucks, but they are a buisiness.

Im gonna have to deal with this mem card nonsense soon when I get a new 360. I got an almost full 20gig with data that I want to transfer and apparently the easiest way is to use a mem card. Fight the power Datel.

Why not send Datel a letter that asks them to get their memory units authorized?

"Someone needs to carry his/her GamerTag and all of his/her Rock Band tracks over to a friend's house for a party to play on a friend's 360. Well, the friend already has a Hard Drive installed so that is not a possibility, "
You just pop out your friends hard drive and pop yours in. It's just like swapping memory cards, just a bit larger.
You should be asking Datel for a refund because they sold you an unlicensed product that was a ticking time bomb from the start.

but if I put mine in he can't use his tracks, or his gamertag, maybe it wasn't worded quite right but I assumed that would be understood. There are situations where a larger Memory Unit is useful. Any other holes you wanna try and poke in my complaints? Keep trying, because honestly for the life of me I can't think of a reason why 512 is the limit.

actually they do, because you can load up binaries of some dlc and xbla if you know how to muck around with licenses.

They can't "get licensed" - MS won't let anyone else make memory cards, HDD's or Wireless Joypads........ they want to keep those profits for themselves. And big profits, $40 for a $6 512Mb flash drive.

The people that are saying that Datel should get a license from Microsoft are missing the point - which is that MS _won't_ license these things, because they have very large profit margins on them.
And the piracy/hacking argument is equally bogus - you can read the data from the official HDD using a piece of freeware software called explorer360 and a SATA cable - so it's no more secure that the Datel card.
In reality, this move is all about maximizing profits - which is fine, but they could at least be honest about it.
