Datel working on 'remedy' for its unauthorized Xbox 360 memory units
There was something of an outcry in the Xbox community when Microsoft announced that the upcoming Xbox 360 Dashboard Update would disable "unauthorized" memory units. Datel, a manufacturer of such devices, recently expressed its disappointment following the announcement. Fortunately, it looks like it takes more than that to keep a good company down, as Maxconsole.net reports that Datel intends to release a solution to the problem.
In a letter to retailers, Datel stated it was "aware of the changes that are required to remedy this problem and will shortly release a solution in readiness for this potential update." Naturally, the company didn't elaborate on the necessary changes. Datel also didn't supply a precise release date for the updated memory units, saying only that they would be available "shortly." Still, it's good news for folks that want more memory for less-than-exorbitant prices.

And then the next update removes the new ones from working. God, cant believe these people run a company

Damn those people for wanting to run their business. Damn them to hell.
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 28th 2009 8:08PM
well why waste your money selling something people would be retarded to buy that's just gonna be made unusable? That's stupid, this isnt the only thing they sell , just focus on the other stuff.

Or even better than forcing us to make "retarded" purchasing decisions between their excessively over priced proprietary hdds, their laughably tiny and also over priced 512MB cards or the unstable and hackable Datel cards, maybe Microsoft should think about developing alternative memory options. Your move salesman...

Whatever, fuck you if you don't laugh.

these devices were specifically aimed at because of their use to modify game data and cheat or hack up your gamerscores. These guys arent fighting anything they're promoting cheating and the people who use them have the potential to ruin the online community.
Bobby Kotick 2: Echoes @ Oct 28th 2009 5:27PM
You're Capt. Planet! We have to laugh so that you stay motivated to protect the world from polution caused by burning up broken Tony Hawk peripherals.
incendious @ Oct 28th 2009 5:29PM
So ban the cheaters. Don't punish the people that have legitimate uses for the cheaper storage devices, like storing stuff.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 5:28PM
and before you think its a load of bull when i say ruin the online experience, what people will do is hack up overpowered weapons for games like borderlands then flood the game with them or worse simply make malformed characters to crash people's games. I'm sure we all remember how great PSO was until the hackers flooded the game.
THE WICKER MAN (BWF) (GT: Dalek Prime) @ Oct 28th 2009 5:42PM
No, FUCK YOU. (And this time I will not use protection. You will have my bastard internet baby.)
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 5:52PM
@incendious
thats idiotic, thats like chasing a million petty drug dealers when you can be smart and target the source. people arent using those devices as a cheap alternative anyways, most of their customers all have alliterative motives for purchasing them.
Extinction @ Oct 28th 2009 5:53PM
It's MS's fault for not encrypting save data like PSP/PS3 do.
incendious @ Oct 28th 2009 6:04PM
@DeepFriedSushi
You lost me at alliterative.
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 28th 2009 6:14PM
So if we all follow Sushi's methods. How do we take care of drunk drivers? Disable all cars from working! It's crazy, but it just MIGHT work.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 6:14PM
i meant "ulterior motives"
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 6:17PM
@Samuel Vimes
ya because that's the same right? cars are used for transportation, dont be moronic
and make poor analogies to make me seem less credible, datel's devices have always been about being used for other purposes. I would easily give datel the benefit of the doubt but look at their track record, every thing they release can and is being used by pirates or hackers.
Knight Marquise @ Oct 28th 2009 6:18PM
"Fight the power Datel!"
No, it's more like pay your damn licensing fees and get with the program; help prevent the idiot hackrz, or get out of the game.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 6:21PM
^thats the thing they have no intent on ever getting licensed because all their devices such as the hdd connectivity kit is all used for cheating and hacking. Cheating and having fun on your own thats perfectly fine i couldnt give a shit but its when you go into a online game and ruin the experience for everyone else. Remember the cod4/codwaw god mode online well thats was because of datel's hdd kit. Just means extra time IW and treyarch has to waste just to patch these old games up to prevent exploits instead of putting their time and effort into new games or new maps.
Datel knows and willing is promoting hacking.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 6:27PM
@Extinction
I feel that the reason they didnt do that was because encryption and decryption impacts performance of loading and saving. Its a tradeoff.
Take for example the uncharted 2 beta, not only did that thing take an hour to download but you had to wait another hour just to let it install. MS simply wanted less of a barrier so for developers, and stuff like encrypting and decrypting can be handled by the developer if they feel its worth it to make the sacrifice. Instead of having it mandatory on the ps3.
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 28th 2009 6:30PM
I agree they should pay the licensing fees and attempt to still make it more affordable for users. But whatever analogies are used it is still the same. Do you know this company personally? Do you speak to the owner and he's like "Yeah we totally promote cheating and piracy"? No. So don't slander a company because people use their hardware for illegal means. Grow up.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 6:38PM
what the hell? thats the exact point to their devices is to cheat, their most popular item used to be the pro action replay.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 28th 2009 5:06PM

Rhamsey @ Oct 28th 2009 5:09PM
I hope they find a way to make the memory units already out there work and not just new ones.
BananaBoat @ Oct 28th 2009 6:35PM
I'm assuming that the way to make them work is paying Microsoft a licensing fee. Anything else could be blocked through an additional firmware update.
fuzzynyanko @ Oct 28th 2009 5:10PM
I wouldn't be surprised. Datel's website has a video detailing their facilities, which includes a massive reverse-engineering lab. That lab's sole purpose is to tear apart the working of devices and firmware.
I'm surprised that none of the video game blogs have featured it
CH3BURASHKA @ Oct 28th 2009 5:18PM
This reminds me of the Palm Pre iTunes-compatibility stories. You go Datel, fight the power.

shhhh
Extinction @ Oct 28th 2009 5:54PM
Its not piracy.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 6:45PM
actually they do, because you can load up binaries of some dlc and xbla if you know how to muck around with licenses.
eNrique @ Oct 28th 2009 8:13PM
You can do that with a official memory hdd, you just need the transfer cable.
¬¬
microsoft is not protecting consumers against cheaters / piracy.
They just want your money. ALL.

MS WONT license this device, cause it's cheap and lets you use SD cards with far greater capacity than MS even sells
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 28th 2009 5:32PM
I don't get why people are hating on Datel. Back in the 80's if it wasn't for them creating action replay us commodore 64 users found to be a god send considering bad tapes could take you upward of 20 minutes to load saved game files. They also created the wii freeloader so you could play region locked games. Just because people can utilize their work for piracy doesn't mean that is their sole intent. It's like saying the ability to rip a cd or movie on a computer is for the sole intent of piracy. It all comes down to what someone does with it. If their true intent was specifically geared toward criminal means, they wouldn't have lasted since the 80's.
DeepFriedSushi @ Oct 28th 2009 5:55PM
it is their intent to be marketed towards the pirates they have always marketed in shady business and they always will. That's like growing weed for sale to anyone then saying its medicinal.
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 28th 2009 6:07PM
So lets delve into your mind for a bit. Blades. Created to do all sorts of cutting and chopping of things. Someone uses one to commit murder. Ban all blades from the world? That is the mentality you are taking on here. Just because someone creates something for a specific application, and someone decides to abuse that application for criminal intent, doesn't mean the creators are to blame.
Knight Marquise @ Oct 28th 2009 6:22PM
I truly don't believe you're a tard, or that naive. So I'm going on the hope that you are simply using hyperbole, albeit in a method that is unbelievably retarded & naive.
Samuel Vimes @ Oct 28th 2009 6:26PM
Think what you want but it doesn't change the fact that it comes down to the user themselves to create things like cheating and piracy. Yes the analogy may have been over exaggerated, but I am at work here so cut me a break on this one.
that1dj @ Oct 28th 2009 5:33PM
The small update today for the WPA2 support appears to have officially broke the Datel memory unit. This pisses me off because I purchased one to move all of my game saves and my tag (I know, I could just recover it) to my new MW2 360 in the next couple of weeks. I sold my previous model to a friend, so this was the only way I could store enough data without having to purchase 2 of those rip-off "official" 512 MB cards.
Personally, I'm happy Datel is working on a remedy. As long as I can put my game saves on to my new 360, I'll be happy.
that1dj @ Oct 28th 2009 5:37PM
I believe I caught a mistake in my post. Meant to put "disabled" instead of broke. Same difference.
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 28th 2009 5:34PM
If they do, I'll buy one just to support them.
Oh yeah and also so I can backup my saves and gamertag without getting screwed by MS.
david @ Oct 28th 2009 5:39PM
I love how people can justify microsoft on this one, claiming that it 'stops cheaters'
Give me a break, I'm sure you're the same people that want helmet laws, seatbelt laws, and anything else that removes the responsibility of the individual and puts it on the entire community. If a cheater is using a product to cheat, it is the individual's fault, not the company, and especially not the others who use their products in a fair manner.
Bravo Datel, keep up the good work!
