We'd thought the Grand Theft Auto franchise had taken us to lovingly rendered simulacra of every metropolitan city-type known to man, but apparently, we thought wrong. In the back of the GTA IV: Episodes from Liberty City manual, a fake advertisement points to the series' "Next Stop" (seen above). Of course, the destination being teased is quite obviously the lovely town of Clip Artington, Minnesota. Surely you've heard of Clip Artington! It's renowned for its apple butter festivals.
On the off chance the teaser is pointing to a different city, we've ... we've really got no idea. Looks like a desert, though, right? And a mountain? And some conical, obsidian monoliths? What? Trees? Oh, yeah, that makes a lot more sense. We'd love to hear your speculation in a well-written, thought-provoking comment! There's a place for those right after the jump, you know.

Allow me to use this space to make the top of the comments section interesting. It most certainly looks South American or island like. I would really lean towards Brazil but that might be obvious based on flag colors. But then maybe it's supposed to be obvious. Anyway that's about the best guess you can make at this point.

I never saw the GTA games as making fun of the US. Making fun of specific types of people (like OG Loc) or groups (like the mafia) was always more up Rockstar's alley. Are you just an angry foreigner or something?

Have you ever been to Hong Kong? It's one of the most metropolitan cities in the world. It also happens to have a fantastically complicated road network and a thriving criminal underworld. Call me crazy, but that sounds like a good locale to me.

You don't think any of that might translate to a global city? I think there are a lot of opportunities outside of the good 'ole US of A.
How about GTA Tokyo? You could do so many things with the strange and ... wonderful ... Japanese culture. See "Princess Robot Butterfly" vid from earlier this week.

If they take it outside the US, one great possibility would be late 80s/early 90s europe.
You have the perfect excuse for partitioning the environment, too. In '89 you have the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 94 you have the opening of the chunnel. So you could start in western europe, "france" and "germany" and "spain", etc, open up the eastern bloc and introduce the organized crime into/from there, then open up the chunnel for access to "england", where you could finish off the game with a crown jewel heist, or something.
Think of the landmarks, like the Eiffel tower, Big Ben, or if you included southern europe you could have Rome with the colosseum, etc.
Then you could have all that 80s music, and even better, as the time progresses or as you unlock new areas, you could have the stations change. Or, have different announcers for different areas/times, doing different chatter over the same or somewhat new songs.
Probably wouldn't fit on a single DVD that way, though, with that much music. (Or just go with mono instead of stereo, should cut down the bitrate) - Yeah, PS3 doesn't have that restriction, but given the sales figures and MS's monetary investment into GTA, there's no way in hell they wouldn't have a 360 version, which means DVD.

I think the main problem with Tokyo (as effing awesome as that would obviously be) is that the cultural jabs could give a kinda queasy rasistic (for the lack of a better word) feeling.

They did a GTA London back in the day, so keeping it all "USA" related isn't 100% accurate.

I love the old games but maybe they should try a new location. Perhaps Detroit or even Britain. I would love to revisit Vice City though!

This Rockstart: go back to Vice City, give it all the GTA4 style bling, give us a nice story in the 80s or even the 90s and turn it up to eleven by expaning to a full state like in San Andreas... or at least just a Vice City that isn't half empty this time.

If you want to enjoy your time on the internet, go to the GTAForums site and read the speculation. Every 14 - 17 year old on the webz will predict and argue why it is set in their home town. "ZOMG IT'S DECATUR, IL WHICH WILL BE SO SWEET AND PERFECT FOR GTA5!!"
