Left 4 Dead 2 getting Avatar rewards
Over on the Steam forums, there was some hullabaloo earlier about potential Avatar awards for the Xbox 360 version of L4D2, all stemming from uncompressed files found on a dedicated server for the PC demo. Well, we're glad to inform you that Valve has confirmed Avatar awards will be included with the game (via G4) and that there will be a total of nine different Avatar rewards, six of which we currently know about.
These awards will run the gamut from a med kit backpack to a frying pan prop right down to Rochelle's Depeche Mode shirt you see above. And, unlike some other Avatar awards, you won't need to max out Gamerscore to get 'em; L4D2 Avatar awards unlock after you've completed more manageable tasks, such as winning ten games of Versus or killing 10,000 infected.
If you want to see some of the items in the flesh, head past the break for a virtual tour courtesy of G4.

They didn't have a men's pink Depeche Mode shirt?
danthaman15 @ Oct 28th 2009 4:19PM
I wonder if the avatar would make stupid motions with the props, such as making "flipping" motions with the frying pan, not knowing it's true purpose in the game.
Dirty @ Oct 28th 2009 4:06PM
Wow 9. That's quite a bit more than I expected a game to have. Hope to see more of this.
Dirty @ Oct 28th 2009 4:08PM
are they counting mens and womens versions of clothes in that 9? Lame, oh well the frying pan is win.
Terrificy @ Oct 28th 2009 4:53PM
Nope, they're not. 9 awards, 13 pieces of clothing being awarded. Therefore, 9 items, and 4 duplicates for the other gender.
Monica Dickey @ Oct 28th 2009 5:24PM
Yeah I am surprised! Glad to see this feature finally getting used. I didn't really want to pay for avatar clothes but winning them in a game is cool.
Shadowbender (Nelson Is Behind You) @ Oct 28th 2009 4:09PM
Just promise me Microsoft won't make you pay for these awards. We all know how they are. ;)
Look At This Suit @ Oct 28th 2009 6:27PM
You can get all 9 for $60.
Because, you know, you need to buy the game.
Vcize @ Oct 28th 2009 4:13PM
Avatar awards are always free. They're in a separate section than the paid stuff.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 28th 2009 4:19PM
Microsoft? Free? You guys are funny!
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 28th 2009 5:10PM
When's the last time you paid for a reward of any sort? Congratulations on a great post, now give me 10 bucks and I'll upvote you.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 28th 2009 6:18PM
Congratulations, MDF. You continue to defend that POS console and it's maker into the ground...
The Dark Wayne [Planeteer: Power of the Batusi] @ Oct 28th 2009 4:12PM
T-shirts? Really? Man, i was hoping avatar awards would be more entertaining, like tank arms or a boomer stomach. Or bill's beard and beret!
incubeezer @ Oct 28th 2009 4:17PM
What about the aforementioned med kit backpack and frying pan prop? Sounds good to me. Too bad I'm not getting it.
joeybeast @ Oct 28th 2009 4:24PM

I'm starting to wonder if Joystiq just censors people automatically at random.
Or maybe they really are just that dumb.
SpyderTaco (PSN: Ar4chNova89) @ Oct 28th 2009 4:19PM
See, the joke is I put ****. But **** could mean ANYTHING. It could even mean ****!
Unfortunately, for people like Hace, everything needs to be explained in detail.
FOR **** SAKE!
B @ Oct 28th 2009 4:19PM

A retarded post to an already retarded post?
Why, you'll cause a warp in the space/time continuum!
YOU'RE A MADMAN!
Hace @ Oct 28th 2009 4:31PM
Spyder, your post was totes not there before. Sorry.
But you're still an asshole for posting before me so I take that back.
Captain Planet [Planeteer | Power of Captain Planet] @ Oct 28th 2009 5:15PM
So I just asked Wolfram Alpha, "Is B a retard?"
And it gave me this answer:

I decided to go with the PC version this time 'round, but I still like the idea of avatar awards.
Marius @ Oct 28th 2009 4:24PM
Why is he staring at me like that
President Taco @ Oct 28th 2009 4:26PM
ugh, avatars looked gay enough with the little hip-out pose. Just add shirts and you're all set.
I am not in any way homophobic, but PLEASE look at the post pic and tell me that looks otherwise.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 28th 2009 4:30PM
I predict downvotes.
Wince @ Oct 28th 2009 4:32PM
Ah, but then people will see your comment and upvote. But that effect was negated when I posted this comment.

RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Oct 28th 2009 5:35PM
Yes, because sexuality is dictated by the way you stand rather than who you choose to form relationships with. Well done for figuring that out.
XBL: cliftonJONES @ Oct 28th 2009 4:30PM
i think that microsoft should implement avatar awards for the most popular 360 console and arcade games that have already been out (free of course, which is why they're awards)...cuz, i'd like to have a sonic shirt for my avatar or even a batarang...i mean, they're tossing in marketplace avatar stuff for old games (i.e., Mass Effect), so why not others?
Killerrin @ Oct 28th 2009 4:40PM
What!!??!! SONIC WAS POPULAR...

They should have made a hunter hoodie.
Stevetrop @ Oct 28th 2009 8:02PM
A fine idea sir I agree
Rhamsey @ Oct 28th 2009 4:38PM
This is just fucking awesome. I love avatar awards. I'm currently wearing my splosion man ones.
todd @ Oct 28th 2009 4:39PM
Anyone know if older games will have these? Will I need to unlock them by getting the achievements again? Or will they be unlocked when the update happens (update for this feature)? There are a lot of unanswered questions with this feature.
Killerrin @ Oct 28th 2009 4:42PM
your answers
No/Maby depend if Dev's want to do a TU for the game to add them,
No
and No, they already did the update to add avatar awards
Mr.ESC @ Oct 28th 2009 5:02PM
You know I didn't want to get L4D2 for the x360 since I didn't do very well at L4D but this game is really hard to ignore.I was going to wait until I had a better PC.
johnnynumber5 @ Oct 28th 2009 5:04PM
This is a brilliant idea and something all games should include as a companion to achievements and trophies. I'm not sure if this has been fully integrated into Home but it's a no brainer to encourage replayability of the title.
Great move on the behalf of Valve & Microsoft.
isthatblazerock @ Oct 28th 2009 5:12PM
How come my dashboard doesnt move so quickly and efficiently...

RobLink (Alex Kidd incarnate) @ Oct 28th 2009 5:37PM
Clear your cache. It tells you how in the help section next to settings.
Matt C @ Oct 28th 2009 5:33PM
The other awards are:
Med Kit - Earned after completing all 5 campaigns.
Bull Shifters T-shirt - Earned after winning 5 versus games.
Frying Pan - Earned after killing 10,000 infected.
Garden Gnome - Earned by rescuing Gnome Chompski
X3HaloEd @ Oct 28th 2009 6:16PM
I have to say, this is a really good idea.
McWilly @ Oct 28th 2009 6:17PM
Am I rhe only one who finds it weird that there are avatar award files in the PC demo?

This is excellent Valve! I wish everyone learns from them. Cool shirts AND props for free awarded by doing special not-insanely-difficult things in the game!
