Star Fox Command for the DS.

The last one that was well liked, and therefore matters was Star Fox 64, although I do think Assault for the GC is really underrated.

No wonder star fox popularity is in decline!
Nintendo is so busy rolling in their money that they dont take the time to develop good games anymore
The wii is one of the biggest loads of garbage that I have ever purchased, except I bought 2 seasons of the British office, and that was probably a bigger waste of money

> Star Fox Command for the DS.

I have tried it on my R4 and found it to be really hard to understand. Game gives very little of explanation of what/how to do. A sickness traditional to franchises. I erased it after few attempts at starting playing... DS has too many games to waste one's time on such oddities where game developers do not even bother to tell what the hell the game is about.

Yeah, Assault is a lot better than people say. The regular flying stages were great and the storyline was pretty nice if you ignore the "Hey, everybody's alive! Yaaay!"-ending. ...and Panther. Sheesh, I hate that one-dimensional replacement.

Command on the other paw was absolutely horrid.

Wow Frodo, you were scheduling to make that comment sometime today weren't you?

Anyways Ricky Gerveus know you hate the British Office, that's why he had to dumb down the American one for you to like it.

Wasn't Assault made by Namco, Adventures by Rare, Command by Q-games? So really, is it any wonder the series popularity has been on the decline?

Yup. Furthermore, Adventures was first supposed to be a completely original game that just got the Starfox theme tacked on for some reason.

I'm sure it'll sell well if they made a Wii version. You can even have Peppy tell you to "FLAIL YOUR ARMS RANDOMLY TO BARREL ROLL!"

They have no make it less "Star Wars Battlefront" and make it more "Star Wars: Tie Fighter".

And playing the SNES Starfox is still awesome and it's a 15 years old game.

I'm used to ignoring useless anti-Wii comments by now, but slagging the original Office? The combination of those two opinions makes me think you have little joy in your life...and would have no idea where to look for it if you tried.

I still steadfastly refuse to watch the US version of The Office.

I thought they did an okay job on Assault and Command only because it had Starfox 64 elements. That's the thing though. JUST ELEMENTS. Why the crap can't they go back to strictly vehicle missions with no fluff: just raw, straightforward, arcade-like levels with the occasional free-floating battle in-between. Those are the BEST.

I hold Starfox 64 as my number 1 game hands down. I just don't get these people who enjoy Starfox for the STORY and the CHARACTERS.

Of course the popularity of Star Fox is on the decline. There hasn't been a Star Fox game in so long and after Star Fox 64 they were all pretty crappy. Just make a new Star Fox game and Nintendo might be surprised about how much Star Fox popularity grows...if it's a good game, that is.

Odd... as the series has progressively distanced itself from its own core gameplay, it has become less popular.

I wonder if there's any way to fix this problem.

Why yes there is good sir! The introduction of arbitrary motion controls will revitalize the title and bring it to it's former glory!

In all seriousness though... Nintendo needs to remember that just because you can fix it doesn't mean that it's broke. Star Fox 64 is still the crown jewel of the series, and every title after that has been something of a blunder because they tried to expand the gameplay out from there into areas where it just doesn't work. We liked Star Fox because of it's fast paced tunnel shmup action. When they did all range mode in 64, that was killer. But at some point, and I'm really confused as to when this happened, Nintendo came to the conclusion that the on foot mode in multiplayer was what was drawing people in, and dedicated themselves to shoving into the series however they could, and the series has suffered ever since.

Ha. Actually, I could see good pointer controls working well with Star Fox. It looks like Sin and Punishment 2 is going to get some good mileage out of them.

But I don't want to shake the nunchuck every time Slippy tells me to do a barrel roll...

@Greyseal:

Exactly. The first thing I thought after reading:

"He says that every time a new entry releases, he's "hoping people will enjoy it as much as I do," but that -- in Japan, at least -- the series' popularity has not met with Nintendo's expectations over its lifespan."

...was: No shit! Maybe you should make the gameplay like it was when it was popular!!! I can't believe Miyamoto didn't realize that after Star Fox Adventures.

The only thing I liked in Adventures was the fur graphics, which were a nice step forward in game graphics.

Adventures was a fun game, but it literally wasn't a starfox game. It was originally an n64 game but then it randomly had starfox characters added and got put on the gamecube.

I agree with you... Analog stick to move the Arwing, IR Pointer to aim, A to shoot, B to use boms, Z to do a barrel roll... and d-pad up to boost and d-pad down to break. You can also do a forward motion with both the Nunchuck and Remote at the same time to boost, and another backward motion to break.

You have to have two barrel roll buttons for opposite directions and so you can do sharp turns. If you're already occupying B for bombs and the D-Pad for loops, you might be forced to use some kind of motion control. But then having to shake the wiimote for right barrel rolls would mess up your aiming. Maybe the best would to use B and Z for barrel rolls, and shake nunchuck for bombs. I do prefer the idea of using B, but this way you wouldn't have to shake the wiimote and it still generally makes sense.

. . . Or maybe it could just be a classic controller game.

i vote pointer to aim, A to shoot, Z/B to barrel roll, d pad down to radio and motion to do the yellow c actions (u turn, looping, boost and brake) ...

and talking about yellow c ....shake for bombs ?

What happened to the now ignored C button ? xD
I vote him for wise bombs

I can't believe that I forgot the C button on the Nunchuck... so, the final configuration would be:

Analog stick to move the Arwing, IR Pointer to aim, A to shoot, C to use bombs, Z and B to do a barrel roll...

D-Pad up to boost and D-Pad down to break (you can also do a forward motion with both the Nunchuck and Remote at the same time to boost, and another backward motion to break).

And all the radio talk between Fox and his parters could come from the Wii Remote speaker.

A funny thing happens. When you stop making new games for a franchise, it becomes less popular.

Seriously, how is there no motion conrolled Star Fox game for Wii? After Zelda's sword, it was the first place my mind went regarding motion controlled gaming. I want waggle barrel rolls!

Honestly, they just kept getting worse and worse. The original game had some alright rail-shooting. But after that, it was rail-tanks, and rail-submarines... It wasn't just boring. It was a step backwards.

Why not give us some more free flight? Learn from some classic flight-combat games, like Tie Fighter, and Descent. You have a 3D engine. Use it.

I found Starfox Adventures to be quite enjoyable & quite underrated. The fear test part of the game was the most challenging part I think.

My cousin & I once spent an hour playing Starfox 64 @ Blockbuster when we were supposed to be picking up pizza for the entire family.

I played the SNES game constantly - it rawked. 10fps, pffftt, pure heaven back then. Good old SuperFX chip.

64, it rocks still, but wait...we added a 'landmaster' and a sub? I still play this on VC. The land based missions always felt out of place to me.

Adventures. This is a Zelda clone. Great game, still looks great and plays great (bar that fear tests). But this is not SF, this is a Zelda clone.

Assault I just played some of recently, what a piss poor attempt at the series. Poor collisions, weird bounce off the walls physics.....the final battle was the best thing about that game. Even that is not worth playing through the game again.

The DS effort is one of the all time best entries. Command is what it's all about.

Flying around in a space ship, shooting shit to pieces.

So it is no isuprise interest in the series is dwindling, but if you look back at what has been released, there is no identity. It's like SF came out, was great, everyone was happy - then starting with 64....they ignored what people wanted and tried to have fox do too many things.

I've been a fan, but I'm done with Fox. Unless you can make a better Command, that game plays awesome, the story though...that alone could keep me away from Fox. It's not cute. It's not funny. It's stupid and annoying.
