New Modern Warfare: Airport Murder Simulator 2 video game glorifies terrorism

Speaking to Joystiq, Activision noted that consumers will be given the option to skip such scenes, which it claims are not representative of the overall game. They'll also be preceded by explicit warnings about their "disturbing" nature. While we imagine most players will judge, discuss and react to the sequence within its context -- did you know that the plot tasks you with infiltrating a terrorist group? -- don't expect the mainstream media to handle the issue with equal consideration. Witness Mirror.co.uk's initial reaction: "Modern Warfare 2: Leaked level makes light of terrorist activities." Terrorists in my vidgame -- haha!
"The game includes a plot involving a mission carried out by a Russian villain who wants to trigger a global war," reads Activision's official statement, included in full after the break. "In order to defeat him, the player infiltrates his inner circle. The scene is designed to evoke the atrocities of terrorism." Whether or not it crosses a line in doing so is up for debate ... but don't tell Fox News that.
On the bright side, at least you can't shoot a pair of alien lesbians having sex on the luggage carousel. We'd never hear the end of it.
Activision:
"The leaked footage was taken from a copy of game that was obtained illegally and is not representative of the overall gameplay experience in Modern Warfare 2.
"Infinity Ward's Modern Warfare 2 features a deep and gripping storyline in which players face off against a terrorist threat dedicated to bringing the world to the brink of collapse. The game includes a plot involving a mission carried out by a Russian villain who wants to trigger a global war. In order to defeat him, the player infiltrates his inner circle. The scene is designed to evoke the atrocities of terrorism. At the beginning of the game, players encounter a mandatory "checkpoint" in which they are warned that an upcoming segment may contain disturbing elements and they can choose not to engage in the gameplay that involves this scene. Consistent with its content, the game has been given an "M" for Mature by the Entertainment Software Ratings Board. The rating is prominently displayed on the front and back of the packaging, as well as in all advertising."

Pfft. That's just violence. I think they'll be more upset about the same sex relations you can have in Dragon Age: Origins.
RiccochetJ @ Oct 28th 2009 6:28PM
That is, Fox News in the US will be upset. The rest of the countries in the world will be upset about the violence.
Man, all you other countries are backwards.

This is unreal.. I don't know how anyone could want this game now. In the video you PLAY as a terrorist gunning down people screaming for their lives in an airport. That's beyond sick, especially as someone that lives in east Jersey grew during 9/11. No way am I getting this crap game now. I was already on the fence after they said they aren't going to have dedicated servers or free maps like last time.
Too many other good games anyway to deal with that crap. Uncharted 2, Demon's Souls, ODST, and Bad Company 2 coming out next year.
RiccochetJ @ Oct 28th 2009 7:44PM
Actually, I find it an interesting twist. Are you insulted by the fact that you participate in it rather than just watching it?
Interesting. I'm actually not sure how I'll feel when I play this to be honest. I know it's a game, but they're hitting something emotionally.

calm down, it's just a game. it's just a part of the narrative. i guess it's interactive to drive the point across even more. the way you phrased it made it sound like manhunt 2 - all killing for the hell of it. in the game, it shows the horror of terrorism from a first person view. remember that you get the option to skip the part or you can just let the others kill the civilians while you watch if you so choose.
PuBeLeSs @ Oct 28th 2009 7:49PM
spoilier alert? just in case
i know no one believes me i dont care. i have played one of the copys. the consoles are OUT IN PLACES with the game. anyways this level is very kinda intense. the beginning is just nuts you take down like 60 people in 2 seconds. AND YOUR NOT ALOUD TO RUN. so you cant just run threw the part, you have to walk ( sit threw it practically) JUST like you would if you were in the persons position. but so far the game is pretty cool. its NOT MUCH upgraded in gfx tbh. the guns are great, and everything up close is great. but the same gfx problems MW1 had are in MW2. anyways ya ill stop here.

The only thing that annoys me is that people were up in arms because of the game about fallujah was being made yet the attitude about this is it's just a game.
It's ALL just a game. I hate double standards and censorship.

Has everyone seen the footage? .. honestly .. I was hoping the joystiq community woudlnt be all "its jsut a game blah blah"
The footage I saw made me really uncomfortable, as in there are people crawling and trying to save their loved ones, while you shoot them and blood spatters everywhere. Or how about when their are people standing in line to buy tickets, a WHOLE crowd, and you just start cutting them all down.
Seriously we all know kids under the allotted age play these games.. cough cough halo ... cough... And do you really think any kid is gonna take the responsibility to skip said scene? NOPE. its undeniable that IW and Acti. are exposing people to such horrors that do not need to be potrayed in a GAME.
To anyone claiming that its the same as GTA, its not. Jesus you are shooting up an airport... which is something of a soft spot for just about everyone. It honestly reminds me of an almost-school shooting we had...
IF people on this site are unable to recognize the severity, well it just shows a lack of responsibilty in more ways than one. For instance, why is everyone here trying to defend their game, when what we should be doing is defending ourselves as gamers! You think when someone actually shoots up an airpoort and admits to playing this game that THE DISC is gonna get all the flac? nope it'll be gamers in general. Think about it at least; this kind of content makes us all look bad.
I'll still buy the game for the insanely promising multiplayer, however I for one will be skipping this scene (there better not be an achievement for it lol). Im not saying I condemn those who don't, go ahead, maybe you'll be able to jusify why its in the game in the first place as I don't see the need.
the_pop @ Oct 29th 2009 7:05PM
It's a fucking game.
You see this kind of stuff in movies every day and no one bats a fucking eyelid it's a joke.
Brodo @ Oct 30th 2009 12:00AM
Well if its the player choosing to shoot the civilians, than I just wont shoot them. Ill run through the airport shooting bullets at the roof
If any of my terrorist buddies lay a finger on a innocent, video generated human being I will shoot them
If I fail the object for shooting them..... then I will be in a bit of a pickle
Dale @ Nov 9th 2009 1:37PM
Weird, you have no problems with gunning down innocent civilians of other nationalities in a video game, but the second it's Americans on American turf it's trash?
I really don't get human beings.
Phoenix @ Nov 9th 2009 3:16PM
Actually, Dale, they're Russians on Russian turf.
Peter Moore [Planeteer | Power of Fucking Your Mother] @ Oct 28th 2009 6:24PM
Why be content with 15 million copies sold when, with a little controversy, you can get 19+ million easily!
ifalldownstairs @ Oct 28th 2009 8:05PM
exactly. i know people claim that this is about using video games as an art form, and using interactivity to advance understanding, etc., but the scene really just seems like a way to purposefully ignite controversy. i'm not offended, but the whole thing seems entirely unnecessary to me, so i'll be skipping that level/scene it if i get the game.
XBL: xGeneral DEATHx PSN: Deeth82 [Planeteer | Power of General Hostility and Angst] @ Oct 29th 2009 7:24AM
Don't get me wrong, controversy will help this game more than hurt it, but I believe the reason they did this is to show you just what kind of impossible situations undercover agents are put through on a regular basis. Watch 24 if you want to see Jack Bauer have to shoot his own boss one day and almost sacrifice an innocent girl's life the next. It's powerful storytelling, and it really draws you into the narrative.

Darn, the title led me to believe this was the sequel to Modern Warfare: Airport Murder Simulator
...Such a dissapointment.
VaultBoy @ Oct 28th 2009 6:41PM
I thought it was another article from The Onion, like the one "Shoot'em in the Face: The Video Game". I'm confident that it'll be treated properly though. God forbid we point out that terrorists MIGHT be douchebags, that wouldn't be very PC for the rest of the media. But we'll be able to count on all of them blowing it out of proportion and not checking the facts because we know most reporters dont play videogames.
Brazell @ Oct 28th 2009 6:25PM
Obviously it simulates terrorism. Isn't that why EVERYBODY plays it!?

WINterfang ( Now with the power to piss you off ) @ Oct 28th 2009 6:25PM
I saw the video and didn't like it one bit, but I'm glad you can skip it if you find it too disturbing and you have the option to also not kill anybody and let your group do it and also you get to fight the guys too.

Many videos are misleading: some show the entire section where you see that you're actually an undercover CIA agent that gets killed at the end because the terrorists knew all along, other videos only show the shooting.

You're damn right I'm defending them. They make one mistake and you guys flame them for life. How many times did the other networks rip the gaming industry to shreds with GTA and Jack Thompson? I don't see anyone ever flaming those networks.
Pardon me for liking a network that doesn't deliver The Holy Messiah's latest marching orders.

No. He was saying that attacking them is like beating a dead horse. We know what they'll do, and we know how they operate so it shouldn't surprise anyone. Not defending unwarranted sensationalism.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 28th 2009 6:48PM
"They make one mistake"
You have not watched as much Fox News as most people have evidently.
Everyone should go read Jacob Weisberg's article in the latest Newsweek (the college one) on page 19. It pinpoints exactly why Fox News is a joke of a news organization and why no one should even pay them any attention, good or bad.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 28th 2009 6:49PM
Newsweek...right...
Print media is dead.
Darth Bradwart, Dark Lord of the Sith @ Oct 28th 2009 6:51PM
The Libs and Obama trying to ban/marginalize Fox News are a serious threat to this country. When people are silenced for expressing their opinion, you might as well take the Constitution and put it in a shredder.
Some of you might want to rethink your position.
Doug @ Oct 28th 2009 6:54PM
I don't want to be a terrorist. And I don't want to have to skip the scene. I'm out.
tmacairjordan87 @ Oct 28th 2009 6:58PM
"When people are silenced for expressing their opinion"
That's the point, they are a NEWS organization. They get paid to report the actual news, not hire all republicans and republican talk show/radio show hosts and skew every story to the far right. I mean, Fox News was caught actually sponsoring and souping up some of those tea party protests, then covering them almost 24/7 until they ended. There's literally no way you can logically defend them.
I'm all for a cleansing of fox news and msnbc, to restructure them into actual news companies.
Look At This Suit @ Oct 28th 2009 6:58PM
People don't criticize Fox News for ONE MISTAKE. They criticize Fox News because it's full of people like Bill O'Reilly who decide to make an ass of themselves on national television. It's not a liberal conspiracy at all. I consider myself a political neutral, and even I can see that Fox News is a terrible excuse for a network.
