Race changes now allowed in World of Warcraft, cost a pretty penny
The virtual lands of World of Warcraft have played host to a number of strange sights these past few days -- and we're not just talking about the Halloween festivities which have turned once proud heroes into foam-mouthed candy addicts. No, we're talking about the new "Race Change" feature, which has basically turned the game's sociological landscape into the ending of the music video for Michael Jackson's "Black or White." Only ... with, like, Trolls and Orcs and stuff.
For a cool $25, players can change the race (provided that race is in the same faction -- changing that costs extra!), gender, appearance and name of their character. We realize there's a number of people who wouldn't mind freshening up their old avatar, but why not just start a new character for free? Seriously, you haven't sunk that much time into your current level 80 Rogue, have you? Oh, you have? 2,800 hours, you say? That's ... that's actually really depressing. We're depressed by that.

Stupid.

I applaud that they give players several different options for character/realm change (even if I don't approve so much of the price), but I fail to see the appeal of changing your character's race.
rTwelve @ Oct 28th 2009 2:57PM
This will be huge after Cataclysm hits, as new race/class combos open up. Until then, I would imagine it to mostly used by regretful blood elf players.
Morisato @ Oct 28th 2009 10:26PM
The appeal in changing your race comes from the different racial traits you get. $25 is a lot for that though... BE's 2 second silence /2 mana regen is awesome for PVP though
Preston @ Oct 28th 2009 2:04PM
Isn't WoW pretty much just a license to print money these days? Why not cut the middle man and give them straight up access to the US Mint?
Rob S. @ Oct 28th 2009 2:14PM
Because there's nothing left. ZING!
Wes @ Oct 28th 2009 6:07PM
Its probably that World of Warcraft accepts nearly every currency out there from Euros to Yen to AUD.
With the way the america dollar has been lately, you might want to keep some of those Euros in Euros...just in case. I mean, Goldman-Sachs-ica of America hasn't been the most stable financially of late.
Stteevvveee @ Oct 28th 2009 2:09PM
How the hell do you explain that on the Role-Playing servers? Especially if you go from Orc to Tauren.
Vidikron @ Oct 28th 2009 2:13PM
Magic... obviously.
stephen2553 @ Oct 28th 2009 2:21PM
a wizard did it...
JerJerBinks @ Oct 28th 2009 2:52PM
Halloween Costume?
Zinger314 @ Oct 28th 2009 3:08PM
Ret-con.

LOL @ Role-Playing servers. That's priceless.

Here comes the "anti-WoW" hate.
This will be boring as usual.
*says this while playing WoW*
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 28th 2009 2:23PM
I wonder what happened to all the pro-WAR anti-WoW folks who used to troll every WoW post here?
briankun @ Oct 28th 2009 2:27PM
They probably wizened up and realized every MMO out there right now is bad?
NintendoJunkie @ Oct 28th 2009 2:15PM
I'm done w/ my MMO phase. I never played WoW, & nor do I intend to. Something about the art style alone doesn't appeal to me. However I did use to play Guild Wars & City of Heroes quite a bit.
Actually the first MMO I ever played was Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 & 2. I absolutely loved the style & music of the game. Of course finding rare items/weps in the game became less fun seeing that it was incredibly easy to dupe items in game & people would just throw them on the ground & give them to other players. Even tho I quit playing it before the servers were permanently taken down, I was quite sad to learn of the server's demise.
I sold the game a year or 2 ago on ebay along w/ the modem adapter (yes I played it on dialup) & strategy guide. Besides, even tho it is playable offline, it isn't as much fun.
I'd love to see a new one made for the Wii w/ the similar gameplay mechanics.

COOL STORY BRO!
Mr Khan @ Oct 28th 2009 3:47PM
There are private servers available, if you search for them. At least, they were still available a few years ago.
Ahh, but i remember the shop-dupe trick. The only way that the impossible-to-find Tsumikiri J-Sword wound up as common as anything else. Plus all the top level mags. The hacking made it more fun, with the overlevel mags, and the items with 300% damage effectiveness on certain enemy classes.
I'm sorely tempted to get Phantasy Star 0 when it comes out in the US.
green11420 @ Oct 28th 2009 5:49PM
What does any of that have to do with this news story?? Or World of Warcraft???
Mark @ Oct 28th 2009 2:17PM
It doesn't cost extra to change faction AND race. By changing faction (the same fee, I think), you obviously are changing your race as well, to whichever you choose. I thought you guys were proper nerds!
Morisato @ Oct 28th 2009 10:29PM
Technically, that's true, but when you change factions, you dont get to choose a race. Depending on what race you started off as, you are automatically given the equivalent race in the other faction.
Guibs @ Oct 28th 2009 2:25PM
You mean, over are the days of harrasment and being killed on sight for just being a blood elves are over?
johnny @ Oct 28th 2009 2:27PM
can i change my race, i want to be spanish. spanish chics are hot
dark_inchworm (stronger than never, ever before) @ Oct 28th 2009 2:34PM
Spanish chicks named Johnny are questionable at best.
JerJerBinks @ Oct 28th 2009 2:54PM
That's not race, that would correctly be described as ethnicity.
Shadowfax (PSN: u2fan4894) @ Oct 28th 2009 3:05PM
Haha Jar Jar Binks discussing racism...
Alexisonfire @ Oct 28th 2009 2:45PM
Meh. 2800 hours isn't THAT long...
Carrie @ Oct 28th 2009 2:46PM
2800 hours? Is that all? I have at least 4300 hours on my priest.
...But I'm not sure if I should be proud or ashamed of that :(
WiNG [XBL&Steam: WiNGSPANTT] from lifeinagame.com @ Oct 28th 2009 2:55PM
The outcome was never really in doubt.
Arcaria @ Oct 28th 2009 3:25PM
it depends, are you trying to impress people on the internet or people in real life?
draco @ Oct 28th 2009 11:10PM
wow, most of us got off with only a few hours of private sermons. your priest must really like you
bobball.calendar @ Oct 28th 2009 3:49PM
Is this a WOW Quincy?
jedimacfan @ Oct 29th 2009 11:56AM
Unlike Michael Jackson, you can apparently change back to what you used to be. "This is it" does not apply.
NintendoJunkie @ Oct 28th 2009 4:31PM
I played a bit of MMO's...then I got a gf...and then married.
Storm Eagle [Resident Capcom Megafan] @ Oct 28th 2009 4:49PM
I did that in reverse. I played WoW, got a gf, got her into WoW and now we're married and both play WoW.
It's a wonderful world we live in, isn't it?
Reuben @ Oct 28th 2009 5:56PM
I have a girlfriend who plays WoW, and then she got me into WoW. I've tried to get into her into other games, but it never takes.
Shiaoran @ Oct 28th 2009 6:01PM
