The virtual lands of World of Warcraft have played host to a number of strange sights these past few days -- and we're not just talking about the Halloween festivities which have turned once proud heroes into foam-mouthed candy addicts. No, we're talking about the new "Race Change" feature, which has basically turned the game's sociological landscape into the ending of the music video for Michael Jackson's "Black or White." Only ... with, like, Trolls and Orcs and stuff.
For a cool $25, players can change the race (provided that race is in the same faction -- changing that costs extra!), gender, appearance and name of their character. We realize there's a number of people who wouldn't mind freshening up their old avatar, but why not just start a new character for free? Seriously, you haven't sunk that much time into your current level 80 Rogue, have you? Oh, you have? 2,800 hours, you say? That's ... that's actually really depressing. We're depressed by that.

I applaud that they give players several different options for character/realm change (even if I don't approve so much of the price), but I fail to see the appeal of changing your character's race.

The appeal in changing your race comes from the different racial traits you get. $25 is a lot for that though... BE's 2 second silence /2 mana regen is awesome for PVP though

Isn't WoW pretty much just a license to print money these days? Why not cut the middle man and give them straight up access to the US Mint?

Its probably that World of Warcraft accepts nearly every currency out there from Euros to Yen to AUD.
With the way the america dollar has been lately, you might want to keep some of those Euros in Euros...just in case. I mean, Goldman-Sachs-ica of America hasn't been the most stable financially of late.

How the hell do you explain that on the Role-Playing servers? Especially if you go from Orc to Tauren.

I'm done w/ my MMO phase. I never played WoW, & nor do I intend to. Something about the art style alone doesn't appeal to me. However I did use to play Guild Wars & City of Heroes quite a bit.
Actually the first MMO I ever played was Phantasy Star Online Episodes 1 & 2. I absolutely loved the style & music of the game. Of course finding rare items/weps in the game became less fun seeing that it was incredibly easy to dupe items in game & people would just throw them on the ground & give them to other players. Even tho I quit playing it before the servers were permanently taken down, I was quite sad to learn of the server's demise.
I sold the game a year or 2 ago on ebay along w/ the modem adapter (yes I played it on dialup) & strategy guide. Besides, even tho it is playable offline, it isn't as much fun.
I'd love to see a new one made for the Wii w/ the similar gameplay mechanics.

There are private servers available, if you search for them. At least, they were still available a few years ago.
Ahh, but i remember the shop-dupe trick. The only way that the impossible-to-find Tsumikiri J-Sword wound up as common as anything else. Plus all the top level mags. The hacking made it more fun, with the overlevel mags, and the items with 300% damage effectiveness on certain enemy classes.
I'm sorely tempted to get Phantasy Star 0 when it comes out in the US.

I wonder what happened to all the pro-WAR anti-WoW folks who used to troll every WoW post here?

They probably wizened up and realized every MMO out there right now is bad?

That's not race, that would correctly be described as ethnicity.

Unlike Michael Jackson, you can apparently change back to what you used to be. "This is it" does not apply.

I did that in reverse. I played WoW, got a gf, got her into WoW and now we're married and both play WoW.
It's a wonderful world we live in, isn't it?

Technically, that's true, but when you change factions, you dont get to choose a race. Depending on what race you started off as, you are automatically given the equivalent race in the other faction.
